Fall 2019/5780 - 11 Carlebach Shul Annual Dinner

Our 17th Annual Dinner was held on June 19th at the elegant St. Regis Hotel. The evening Obegan with an extensive cocktail hour prepared by Foremost Caterers. While played in the background, guests caught up with friends and enjoyed one of the best kosher events of the year.

This year’s honoree was our beloved Rabbi Naftali Citron, who has been leading our Shul for 16 years with care and devotion. In his honor the theme of the event, including the invitation, the decorations, and the flower vases, all included citrons. Once everyone was seated for dinner, Shul President Shy Yellin got up to welcome us and to talk about the Rabbi. Mordy Lipkis, the Journal Chair, then spoke about Reb Naftali’s ability to understand the needs and struggles of each individual member of the congregation. Rabbi Chaim Zev Citron, Reb Naftali’s father, gave a dvar Torah and shared how proud he is to have a son he can learn from, who in many ways surpasses him in Torah knowledge. Then we heard from the Dinner Chair, Joy Fishman, who spoke about how much she values Reb Naftali. Together with Maria Fordin, the Dinner Coordinator, Joy and Mordy presented Rabbi Citron with his gift, a gorgeous silver etrog case. Rabbi Citron spoke last, giving a heartfelt thanks to the community for the incredible show of support.

Of course it wouldn’t be a Carlebach event if we didn’t get up and dance. We had more lively music from Soulfarm, and then it was time to sit and eat dinner. During the meal we were treated to two comedy acts. First we heard from Talia Reese, who had everyone laughing with “He’s so Ashkenaz that boiled potatoes are too spicy,” and then Danny Cohen joked about the woes of traveling to see family in Israel – when security asks you if it’s business or pleasure they forget to give you the third choice: family.

It was a lovely event and a successful fundraiser, and we are so grateful to everyone who participated as well as everyone who helped put the evening together. This dinner would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of Dinner Chair Joy Fishman, Journal Chairs Ellen and Mordy Lipkis, Dinner Coordinator Maria Fordin, and the Dinner Committee. Thanks as well to the Board of Trustees and the dedicated office staff.

Fall 2019/5780 - 17 PRESIDENT’SPRESIDENT’SPRESIDENT’S MESSAGE LETTER LETTER ✍ ✍

Sweetest Friends: Another year has gone, zoomed by, and I, for one, have yet to put it all in perspective. The good news was on the economic front, where the unemployment rate in the US dropped to 3.6%, the lowest level in 50 years. Our Rabbis taught that “without flour there is no Torah and without Torah there is no flour” - a strong economy hopefully gave us the opportunity to spend time on spiritual pursuits and help the less fortunate. There were also terrible events, including senseless mass shootings across the United States and, in the Jewish community, attacks by demented individuals on in Pittsburgh and San Diego. The loss of innocent lives was truly devasting. In Israel, Board of Trustees: recent acts of terrorism by Hamas and others resulted in the loss Shy Yellin, of irreplaceable beautiful children including Ori Ansacher (19), Dvir President Sorek (18) and Rina Shnerb (17), may their memories be a blessing. Hadassa Carlebach, All the vicissitudes we experienced bring to mind the Vice President words of Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch on his commentary ,You have set a Daniel J. Goldschmidt“ ,תַּעֲרֹךְ לְפָנַי שֻׁלְחָן נֶגֶד צֹרְרָי ,(to Tehillim (23 table before me in the presence of my adversaries.” Rabbi Corr. Secretary Hirsch explains that we, the Jewish people, are blessed with the ability to conduct our lives in relative serenity even though Sherri Daniels, our adversaries attempt to wreak havoc around us. Recording Secretary For me, the Carlebach Shul represents a wonderful place Leon Sutton, to distance oneself from much of the world’s tumult. Our chevra Treasurer take seriously the challenge to seek out the Divine and explore Barbara Chazan answers. Rabbi Naftali, in addition to his high-level teaching, leads thought provoking, out-of-the-box discussions addressing Dr. Jeremy Chess theological questions that have challenged many of us. Our baal tefilah, Yehuda Green, commands a huge audience and carries us Steve Eisenberg far beyond our physical setting. We try our best to be a warm and Dr. Raphael Kellman welcoming community and lift up others as well as ourselves. On behalf of the entire Carlebach community, we wish the world a peaceful 5780 and the gift of empathy for one another. May Klal Yisroel be blessed with good health, prosperity, and truly a Shana Tova u’Metuka.

Brother Shy
