Abstract The bouncing ball apparatus exhibits a rich variety of nonlinear dynamical behavior and is one of the simplest mechanical systems to produce chaotic behavior. A computer control system is designed for output calibration, state determination, system identification and control of the bouncing ball apparatus designed by Launch Point Technologies. Two experimental methods are used to determine the co- efficient of restitution of the ball, an extremely sensitive parameter of the apparatus. The first method uses data directly from a stable 1-cycle orbit. The second method is based on the ball map combined with data from a stable 1-cycle orbit. For control purposes, two methods are used to construct linear maps. The first map is determined by collecting data directly from the apparatus. The second map is determined from linearization of the ball map. The maps are used to estimate the domains of attraction to the stable 1-cycle orbit. These domains of attraction are used with a chaotic control algorithm to control the ball to a stable 1-cycle, from any initial state. Results are compared and it is found that the linear map obtained directly from the data gives the more accurate representation of the domain of attraction. 1 Introduction The bouncing ball system consists of a ball bouncing on a plate whose amplitude is fixed and the frequency of vibration is controlled. -

America’s Pastime: How Baseball Went from Hoboken to the World Series An Honors Thesis (HONR 499) by Kimberly Parkhurst Thesis Advisor Dr. Bruce Geelhoed Ball State University Muncie, Indiana April 2020 Expected Date of Graduation July 2020 Abstract Baseball is known as “America’s Pastime.” Any sports aficionado can spout off facts about the National or American League based on who they support. It is much more difficult to talk about the early days of baseball. Baseball is one of the oldest sports in America, and the 1800s were especially crucial in creating and developing modern baseball. This paper looks at the first sixty years of baseball history, focusing especially on how the World Series came about in 1903 and was set as an annual event by 1905. Acknowledgments I would like to thank Carlos Rodriguez, a good personal friend, for loaning me his copy of Ken Burns’ Baseball documentary, which got me interested in this early period of baseball history. Philosophy Start with individual skill, add movement, then add partner. Develops physical competencies, such as, sending and receiving, rhythm and timing, control and coordination. Children learn to follow sequences, anticipate, make decisions and problem solve. Secondary Racket Skills Emphasising tennis is a 2-sided sport. Use left and right hands to develop coordination. Using body & racket to perform movements that tennis will demand of you. Secondary Beanbags Bean bags are ideal for developing tracking, sending and receiving skills, especially in large classes, as they do not roll away and are more easily trapped than a ball. Start with the hand and mimic the shape of the shot. Build confidence through success and then add the racket when appropriate. Secondary Racket Skills and Beanbags Paired beanbag exercises in small spaces that are great for learning to control the racket head. Starting with one beanbag, adding a second and increasing the distance. Working towards a mini rally. Move on to the double racket exercise which mirrors the forehand and backhand shots - letting the game do the teaching. Secondary Ball and Lines Always start with the ball on floor. Develop aiming skills by sending the ball through a target area using hands first before adding the racket. 1 Introduce forehand and backhand. Build up to a progressive floor rally. Move on to individual throwing and catching exercises before introducing paired activity. Start with downward throw emphasising V-shape, partner to catch after one bounce. -

The first concern of course is for our families and friends. Protecting their health and limiting the spread of the virus still is our grea- test common obligation. We are all asked to adapt to the current circumstances, follow the restrictions in our sport and the advice for per- sonal distancing where necessary. And we can see that in following official advice we are successfully fighting Covid-19. As a result in more and more countries the strict measures will be eased in the upcoming weeks, a return to limited training slowly is possible. Polo clubs and stables affected from the restric- tions have mastered the special challenges very well. Des- pite the sometimes limiting possibilities, the care for the horses was and is always upheld. And fortunately the good and close cooperation with the authorities has made it possible to quickly implement individual training plans. -

The research includes the analysis of newspaper coverage of the most significant sporting events in recent Japanese history, including the 2014 Koshien National High School Baseball Championships, the awarding of the People’s Honor Award, the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, wrestler Hakuho’s record breaking victories in the sumo ring, and the bidding process for the 2020 Olympic Games. 2054 Japanese language articles were examined by thematic analysis in order to identify the extent to which established themes of “Japaneseness” were reproduced or renegotiated in the coverage. The research contributes to a broader understanding of national identity negotiation by illustrating the manner in which established symbolic boundaries are reproduced in service of the nation, particularly via mass media. Furthermore, the manner in which change is negotiated through processes of assimilation and rejection was considered through the lens of hybridity theory. iv To my wife, Ari, and my children, Hiroto and Mia. Upon exploring this one dimensional system with basic dynamical equations describing the ball and plate's vertical motion, it was surprising to see that such a simple problem could be so rich in the data it provided. Looking in particular at when the coefficient of restitution of the system was α = 0.99, a number of patterns and interesting phenomena were observed when the ball was dropped from different positions and/or the frequency of the plate was cycled through. Matlab code was developed to first create the scenario and later record time/duration/phase of bounces for very large number of trials; these programs generated a huge array of very interesting results. -

White, Interim Dean of The Graduate School. ABSTRACT In 1908, a Special Base Ball Commission determined that baseball was invented by Abner Doubleday in 1839. The Commission, established to resolve a long-standing debate regarding the origins of baseball, relied on evidence provided by James Sullivan, a secretary working at Spalding Sporting Goods, owned by former player Albert Spalding. Sullivan solicited information from former players and fans, edited the information, and presented it to the Commission. One person’s allegation stood out above the rest; Abner Graves claimed that Abner Doubleday “invented” baseball sometime around 1839 in Cooperstown, New York. It was not true; baseball did not have an “inventor” and if it did, it was not Doubleday, who was at West Point during the time in question. -

Baseball A National Tradition. by Phyllis McIntosh. “As American as baseball and apple pie” is a phrase Americans use to describe any ultimate symbol of life and culture in the United States. Baseball, long dubbed the national pastime, is such a symbol. It is first and foremost a beloved game played at some level in virtually every American town, on dusty sandlots and in gleaming billion-dollar stadiums. But it is also a cultural phenom- enon that has provided a host of colorful characters and cherished traditions. Most Americans can sing at least a few lines of the song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Generations of children have collected baseball cards with players’ pictures and statistics, the most valuable of which are now worth several million dollars. More than any other sport, baseball has reflected the best and worst of American society. Today, it also mirrors the nation’s increasing diversity, as countries that have embraced America’s favorite sport now send some of their best players to compete in the “big leagues” in the United States. Physics: Bouncing Balls Summer of Innovation Zero Robotics Bouncing Balls Instructor's Handout 1 Objective This activity will help students understand some concepts in force, acceleration, and speed/velocity. 2 Materials At least one bouncy ball, such as a superball or a tennis ball. If you want, you can bring more balls for the students to bounce themselves, but that's not critical. 3 Height Bounce a superball many times in the front of the classroom. Ask the students to call out observations about the ball and its bouncing. Things to observe include: • The ball's starting acceleration and speed are 0; • The ball's acceleration and speed increase until the ball hits the ground and bounces; • After the bounce, the ball returns to a maximum height that is less than the original height of the ball Questions to ask: • What forces are acting on the ball?
