Almost a century ago, they were writing about race, immigration, economic disparity, drug addiction, and other issues our society is dealing with today with a reneWed sense of urgency. In spite of their extraordinary popularity, by the time they died within a feW months of each other in 1968, their reputations had fallen into eclipse. This dissertation focuses on Ferber’s and Hurst’s fiction published betWeen approximately 1910 and 1935, the years in Which both authors enjoyed the highest critical and popular esteem. Perhaps because these realistic narratives generally do not engage in the stylistic experimentation of the literary world around them, literary scholars came to undervalue their Work. -

E. Smyth In December 1954, America’s best-selling historical novelist, Edna Ferber, wrote to director George Stevens emphasizing her continued interest in his production of her latest book, Giant. She believed that Giant’s value lay in its exposure of racial prejudice against Mexican Americans in Texas, and that its racial themes had become “more vital, more prevalent today in the United States than . when I began to write the novel.”1 Ferber hoped that one day Anglo oil millionaires like Bick Benedict and Jett Rink, the originators and perpetu- ators of these inequalities in the economic and social hierarchies of America’s new West, would be “anachronisms like the dear old covered wagons and the California gold-rush boys.”2 Later in May 1955, when shooting first began on the film, Ferber wrote to Henry Ginsberg, producer and co-founder of the inde- pendent film company, Giant Productions, “I don’t quite know why the motion picture presentation of Giant interests and fascinates me much more than the screen career of any of my other novels or plays. That goes for Show Boat, So Big, Cimarron, and many others. Perhaps it is because behind the characters and events in Giant there stands a definite meaning, a purpose.”3 Although Ferber had considered writing a historical novel about Texas as early as 1939, she only started to research the topic seriously after the war. -

As the daughter of Ferber's friend and playwriting collaborator, George S. Kaufman, Ms. Kaufman Schneider, at 77, very much remembers this once-famous author. Few today can say as much. ''She was awfully popular,'' Ms. Kaufman Schneider recalled recently over lunch at her apartment in the East 60's. ''She won the Pulitzer Prize'' -- for the novel ''So Big'' in 1925. ''She wrote 'Showboat,' which Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein turned into that musical. She was smart and tough, very opinionated and quite the spinster. She was a regular, alongside my father, at the Algonquin Round Table. And absolutely no one reads her anymore.'' Ferber, who died in 1968 at the age of 82, also wrote plays, six of them with Kaufman, including ''The Royal Family,'' ''Stage Door'' and ''Dinner at Eight.'' The latter is a comic drama about a Depression-era dinner party in which most of the guests are linked by either scandal or intrigue. -

©2016 Elyse Vigiletti READING THE MIDDLE: US WOMEN NOVELISTS AND PRINT CULTURE, 1930-1960 BY ELYSE VIGILETTI DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Stephanie Foote, Chair and Director of Research Associate Professor Siobhan Somerville Professor Gordon Hutner Professor William (Ted) Underwood Professor Dale Bauer Abstract “Reading the Middle: US Women Novelists and Print Culture, 1930-1960 argues that the women writers of the mid-twentieth century middlebrow summoned carefully circumscribed deployments of critical paradigms such as feminism, antiracism, and anticapitalism to fulfill the American bourgeoisie’s need to elevate their leisure reading to an intellectually satisfying enterprise, with the implication that protest is a core value of the American bourgeoisie. Together, its five chapters demonstrate a new reading practice for the most widely read books of the mid-twentieth century—so many of which were written by women—that have lately fallen into obscurity. It proves that digital tools, which digital humanities scholars have been developing and refining for the past couple of decades, are ready for use as tools for scholars seeking to understand differently situated archives. Most importantly, it unpacks the paradoxes of a US conventionality that insists on subversion as one of its defining principles. A semi-ironic play on phrenological concepts popular in the nineteenth century, the term middlebrow emerged in early-twentieth-century essays that repudiated the hold the growing and increasingly literate population of middle-class consumers were thought to have on the book industry. -

Edna Ferber’s Interracial Ideal While the heterogeneity of the early-twentieth-century stage opened spaces for the construction of new models of racial and gender identity, popular literature of the time ofers another venue for exploring such shifing ideologies as they relate to the black-Jewish imaginary. Te work of Jewish American writer Edna Ferber bridges the realms of literature and mass entertainment, and it was in minstrelsy that Ferber found one of her earliest sources of creative inspiration. -
