CHAPTER EIGHT THE NEW ASTRAL MEDICINE Hiro Hirai Introduction The impact of astrology on medical theories and practice in the Renais- sance still remains to be fully explored. Besides the general influences of celestial bodies on sublunary and terrestrial beings, physicians were traditionally taught to take astrology into account in questions such as: 1) conception or nativity; 2) crises of health or illness, known as “criti- cal days”; and 3) medication. The link between medicine and astrology became especially firm after the work of Pietro d’Abano (1257–ca. 1315).1 In the Renaissance, two major factors contributed to the modifica- tion of this traditional relationship between medicine and astrology. One is the severe criticism of judicial astrology, advanced by Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463–1494) in his posthumous work, entitled Disputa- tions against Judicial Astrology (Disputationes adversus astrologiam divina- tricem) (Bologna, 1496). Many of his contemporaries (followed by modern historians) generally considered that Pico rejected the divinatory aspects of astrology and accepted only its physical dimensions, which can be labeled as “natural astrology.” According to this interpretation, the influ- ences of the celestial region were exerted only by physical means: motion, light and heat.2 Pico thus criticized the astrological aspects of the doctrine 1 See Nancy G. (Bible, 132) I In responding to a question by David Cayley about the use of the word ―anatomy,‖ Frye reveals the very high estimate he has of Robert Burton‘s The Anatomy of Melancholy: The word anatomy in Shakespeare‘s day and a little later meant a dissection for a synthetic overview. One of my favorite books in English literature—there are times when it is actually my favorite—is Burton‘s Anatomy of Melancholy. Of course, there were four humors then, but for Burton there was only the one, melancholy. That was the source of all mental and physical diseases in the world. So he writes an enormous survey of human life. It ranks with Chaucer and Dickens, except the characters are books rather than people. It was both an analysis of the causes and cures and treatment of melancholy and a kind of synthetic overview of human nature before it gets melancholy. On a much smaller scale there was Lyly‘s Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit, which has given us the word euphuism, meaning that if you‘re too bright and don‘t know enough you can get into trouble. That use of the term anatomy was one that I thought exactly fitted what I was doing.‖ (Interviews, 936–7)1 The title Anatomy of Criticism is obviously indebted to Burton, but the title was assigned to the book late in the publication process. -

Zeus (English pronunciation: /ˈzjuːs/[3] ZEWS); Ancient Greek Ζεύς Zeús, pronounced [zdeǔ̯s] in Classical Attic; Modern Greek: Δίας Días pronounced [ˈði.as]) is the god of sky and thunder and the ruler of the Olympians of Mount Olympus. The name Zeus is cognate with the first element of Roman Jupiter, and Zeus and Jupiter became closely identified with each other. The place was called Delphoi (“Womb”). In its cave sanctuary lived a shamanic priestess called the Pythia—Serpent Woman. Her prophetic power came from a she-dragon in the Castalian spring, whose waters had inspirational qualities. She sat on a tripod, breathing vapors that emerged from a deep cleft in the Earth, until she entered trance and prophesied by chanting in verse. The shrine was sacred to the indigenous Aegean earth goddess. The Greeks called her Ge, and later Gaia. Earth was said to have been the first Delphic priestess. [Pindar, fr. 55; Euripides, Iphigenia in Taurus, 1234-83. This idea of Earth as the original oracle and source of prophecy was widespread. The Eumenides play begins with a Pythia intoning, “First in my prayer I call on Earth, primeval prophetess...” [Harrison, 385] Ancient Greek tradition held that there had once been an oracle of Earth at the Gaeion in Olympia, but it had disappeared by the 2nd century. [Pausanias, 10.5.5; Frazer on Apollodorus, note, 10] The oracular cave of Aegira, with its very old wooden image of Broad-bosomed Ge, belonged to Earth too. DEARDEN The problem of the production of Charon's boat 1) is one of the perennial chestnuts of Aristophanic study, yet one that theore- tically it ought to be fairly easy to solve, for, as Arnott has remark- ed 2), the movements of the characters in the early scenes of the Frogs can be plotted with considerable accuracy and this limits in certain respects the possibilities open to the producer. Dionysus and Xanthias open the play as with donkey and baggage they appear on their way to visit Heracles and then the Underworld. The conclusion that they enter through a parodos and journey across the orchestra seems unavoidable for no starting point is indicated for their journey and the donkey would pose problems elsewhere. At line 35 therefore, when Xanthias dismounts, the two climb onto the stage and approach Heracles' door. A conversation with Heracles occupies the next 130 lines before the two travellers bid him adieu and turn back to the orchestra to continue their journey. Xanthias bidden once more to pick up the baggage, pro- duces his customary complaint, suggests that Dionysus might consider hiring a corpse to take the luggage to Hades (167) and points out that one is being carried in. There is no indication of where the corpse comes from and again it seems reasonable to assume that it is simply carried in through one parodos across the orchestra and out through the other; Dionysus and Xanthias them- 1) For the purposes of this article the conclusions of T.B.L. -

The ancients Greeks were polytheistic — that is, they worshipped many gods. Their major gods and goddesses lived at the top of Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece, and myths described their lives and actions. In myths, gods often actively intervened in the day-to-day lives of humans. Myths were used to help explain the unknown and sometimes teach a lesson. For example, Zeus, the king of the gods, carried his favorite weapon, the thunderbolt. When it rained and there was thunder and lightning, the ancient Greeks believed that Zeus was venting his anger. Many stories about how the Greek gods behaved and interacted with humans are found in the works of Homer. He created two epic poems: the Iliad , which related the events of the Trojan War, and the Odyssey , which detailed the travels of the hero Odysseus. -
