(The DSB was published in 14 vol- umes in 1970–76, edited by C. C. Gillispie, New York: Charles Scribner's Sons.) I was later asked to write two more entries: for Parseval and Emil Leon Post. The entry for Post had to be done very quickly, and I could not have finished it without the generous help of one of his relatives. By the time the last of these articles was published in 1976, that for Giovanni Vailati, I had come out publicly as a homosexual and was involved in the gay liberation movement. But my article on Vailati was still discreet. If I had written it later, I would probably have included evidence of his homosexuality. The seven articles for the Dictionary of Scientific Biography have a uniform appear- ance. (The exception is the article on Burali-Forti, which I present here as I originally wrote it—with reference footnotes. -

This section features some of the religious scientists who appear in different entries on these Faith and Science pages. Some of these scientists are well-known, others less so. Many are Catholic, many are not. Most are Christian, but some are not. Some of these scientists of faith have lived saintly lives. Many scientists who are faith-full tend to describe science as an effort to understand the works of God and thus to grow closer to God. Quite a few describe their work in science almost as a duty they have to seek to improve the lives of their fellow human beings through greater understanding of the world around them. But the people featured here are featured because they are scientists, not because they are saints (even when they are, in fact, saints). Scientists tend to be creative, independent-minded and confident of their ideas. Agnesi, Maria Gaetana (1718-1799) Catholic Christian A child prodigy who obtained education and acclaim for her abilities in math and physics, as well as support from Pope Benedict XIV, Agnesi would write an early calculus textbook. Maria Gaetana Agnesi Melissa De La Cruz Maria Gaetana Agnesi's life Maria Gaetana Agnesi was born on May 16, 1718. She also died on January 9, 1799. She was an Italian mathematician, philosopher, theologian, and humanitarian. Her father, Pietro Agnesi, was either said to be a wealthy silk merchant or a mathematics professor. Regardless, he was well to do and lived a social climber. He married Anna Fortunata Brivio, but had a total of 21 children with 3 female relations. He used his kids to be known with the Milanese socialites of the time and Maria Gaetana Agnesi was his oldest. He hosted soires and used his kids as entertainment. Maria's sisters would perform the musical acts while she would present Latin debates and orations on questions of natural philosophy. The family was well to do and Pietro has to make sure his children were under the best training to entertain well at these parties. For Maria, that meant well-esteemed tutors would be given because her father discovered her great potential for an advanced intellect. Her education included the usual languages and arts; she spoke Italian and French at the age of 5 and but the age of 11, she also knew how to speak Greek, Hebrew, Spanish, German and Latin. Historians have given her the name of the Seven-Tongued Orator. With private tutoring, she was also taught topics such as mathematics and natural philosophy, which was unusual for women at that time. With the Agnesi family living in Milan, Italy, Maria's family practiced religion seriously. -

By combining the advantages of traditional publications and the digital medium, the platform offers a new way of publishing research and of studying historical topics or current issues in relation to primary materials that are otherwise not easily available. They are directed at scholars and students of various disciplines, and at a broader public interested in how science shapes our world. Para compreender o lugar ocupado pela estudiosa e sua obra na história da matemática, é essencial situá-la em malhas contextuais mais amplas, de modo a abarcar parte do processo de circulação dos discursos e da divulgação da álgebra e do cálculo, naquele contexto. Mediante este enfoque, a abordagem metodológica adotada neste trabalho se baseou em uma análise documental, a partir da articulação das esferas epistemológica, historiográfica e contextual, na concepção de Alfonso- Goldfarb e Ferraz. Considerando que uma interligação entre tais esferas constituí uma empreitada não trivial, nosso corpus é composto pela obra matemática Instituzioni Analitiche, as correspondencias de Agnesi com seus contemporâneos, além de alguns trabalhos de estudiosos que se debruçaram sobre a vida e obra da estudiosa, como forma de trazer à luz indícios de que houve interesse e comprometimento de Agnesi em divulgar seu tratado para 1 [email protected] 2 [email protected] Educ. -

This paper compares U7hyte's liberal and organ!cist constitutionalism to that of the eightennth century British political thinker, Edmund Burke. Three themes are predominant in U7hyte's work: those of liberty and security, unity and diversity, and constitutional change. Drawing out these themes in both U7hyte's and Burke's constitutional thought, the author argues that U7hyte has a sound historical basis for deriving Canadian constitutional practices from liberal principles ordinarily associated with Burke. -

Peano, University of Torino, Italy1 Not every learned man makes a good teacher, nor is he able to transmit to others what he knows. Rampinelli, however, was marvellously endowed with this talent. [Brognoli, 1785, 85]2 1. Introduction “Shortly after I arrived in Milan I had the pleasure of meeting Signora Countess Donna Maria Agnesi who was well versed in the Latin and Greek languages, and even Hebrew, as well as other more familiar tongues; moreover, she was well educated in the most important Metaphysics, the Physics of the day and Geometry, and she knew enough of Mechanics for the purposes of Physics; she had a little knowledge of Cartesian algebra, but all self-acquired as there was no one here who could enlighten her. Therefore she asked me to assist her in that study, to which I agreed, and in a short time she had, with extraordinary strength and depth of talent, wonderfully mastered Cartesian algebra and the two infinitesimal Calculi,3 to which she added the application of these to the most lofty physical matters. Michel Morin* The Discovery and Assimilation of British Constitutional Law Principles in Quebec, 1764-1774 This paper examines information available to Francophone persons regarding their rights as British subjects prior to the adoption of the Quebec Act of 1774, as well as the use they made of these concepts. The bilingual Quebec Gazette reported on legal developments in France, England, and the American colonies, including challenges to the traditional vision of governmental authority. It discussed the right to be taxed by elected representatives and the conflicts between the metropolis and the colonies. Debates about these issues are thought to have appeared in Quebec only after the beginning of the American Revolution, but they circulated earlier Educated members of the Francophone elite sought more specific information about the new legal system. Many of them were eager to obtain an Assembly if Catholics could sit in it.
