Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Our policy information is available from the repository home page. REPRESENTATIONS OF SCREEN HETEROSEXUALITY IN THE MUSICALS OF FRED' ASTAIRE AND VINCENTE MINNELLI JEFFREY DENNIS CROUSE Ph. D. in Film and Television Studies University of Warwick November 1997 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the ways in which heterosexuality is rendered in the Hollywood genre where its existence is most privileged: musicals of the studio era (c. 1930 - c. 1960). In this popular film category, heterosexuality is expressed in a framework of "boy-meets-girl" amatory coupling that is remarkably amplified and insistent. In analysis that is at once sympathetic and critical of the subject matter, I show that heterosexuality in the Hollywood musical is constructed in a way that is far from monolithic. On the contrary, I find that there are in fact varieties of heterosexual identity that exist in the genre, and that they are most succinctly revealed through romantic engagement. Yet heterosexuality is depicted along divergent formulations owing to contrasting relational aims and assumptions. Building on Richard Dyer's 1993 essay, 'III Seem to Find the Happiness I Seek': Heterosexuality and Dance in the Musical, " I will discuss how the basis of these separate models is traceable to different approaches related to power distributions between men and women. -

INVENTORY TO ARCHIVAL BOXES IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING, AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by MBRS Staff (Last Update December 2017) Introduction The following is an inventory of film and television related paper and manuscript materials held by the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center. Hannah Szenesh HILLSIDE MEMORIAL PARK IRVING AARONSON (1895 – 1963) From his start as an 11-year-old movie theater pianist, Irving Aaronson became a Big Band leader in the 1920s and ‘30s. His band included members Gene Krupa, Claude Thornhill and Artie Shaw. He later worked for MGM as a music coordinator for “Arrivederci Roma” (1957), “This Could Be the Night” (1957), Irving Aaronson “Meet Me in Las Vegas” (1956) and as music advisor for “The Merry Widow” (1952). -
Abstract Femme Fem(Me)Ininities
ABSTRACT FEMME FEM(ME)ININITIES: A PERFORMATIVE QUEERING by Erin Douglas Throughout my thesis I explore alternative fem(me)ininities. Such femmes re-signify femininity by means of disidentification and parody and in turn trouble notions of authenticity. Queer fem(me)inities critique heteronormative conceptions of femininity and sexuality. The texts and theories that I use to inform my theoretical framework of fem(me)ininities are: beside in Eve Kosofsky’s Touching Feeling, Judith Halberstam’s theories of minority femininities and masculinities in Female Masculinity, disidetification in Leslie Feinberg’s Stone Butch Blues, queer parody in Mabel Maney’s Kiss the Girls and Make Them Spy, S/M in Sarah Water’s Tipping the Velvet, and the troubling of authenticity in Showtime’s television series The L Word. This project is an exploration of alternative gender and sexuality performances. The queer theoretical frameworks from Judith Butler, Judith Halberstam, José Esteban Muñoz, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, and Ann Cvetkovich have been integral to my theory of femme fem(me)ininities.
