Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability. -

This thesis explores Henry James’ engagement in his relatiVely neglected early Siction about Italy with material from contemporary magazine culture. By bridging the gap between critics who focus on James’ relationship with Italian culture, and those who examine James’ relationship with his publishers and audience, it aims to explore how he uses interest in Italy manifested in literary magazines to deVelop his writing and build his reputation. The Sirst part of the thesis explores how James writes about Italian culture in his Sirst tales in ways with which his audience would be familiar, in order to cultiVate his readership. The Sirst three chapters deal with ‘TraVelling Companions’ (1870), ‘At Isella’ (1871), and ‘The Madonna of the Future’ (1873) respectiVely. Looking at how magazines represent contemporary debates about the Italian artists and works of art that James depicts, I study the way James draws on this context to !emphasise the relationship between culture and character in his Siction. The second half examines his Siction after 1873 in the light of James’ sense of his emerging literary reputation. Aware of his growing fame, James began to write tales incorporating material from his own serialised traVel writing, thus reinforcing his reputation as a writer about Italy. -

A Letter to the Teachers Dear Teachers, 1 A Letter to the Teachers Opera Colorado is pleased to continue providing engaging and educational programs and performances for students across Colorado. What follows is a guide that we hope you find useful as you, and your students, learn about and explore Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. In the spirit of exploration, we have included a set of 45 minute lessons that connects the opera with all different subjects of learning: music, visual arts, language arts, social studies, math, and science. The lessons include reference to, and are based upon, the new Colorado Department of Education’s Academic Standards: specifically, focusing on the fourth grade expectations. This does not mean, however, that these lessons should be limited to this age group. While we would be very pleased if you used these lessons in the exact format provided, we encourage you to expand, alter, and adapt these lessons so that they best fit your students’ abilities and development. After all, the teacher knows their student’s needs best. Quantity: 2.25 linear feet Location: Brooklyn Collection Map Room, cabinet 11 Repository: Brooklyn Public Library – Brooklyn Collection Reference Code: BC0071 Scope and Content Note The 800 items in the Brooklyn Theater Playbills and Programs Collection, which occupies 2.25 cubic feet, easily refute the stereotypes of Brooklyn as provincial and insular. From the late 1880s until the 1940s, the period covered by the bulk of these materials, the performing arts thrived in Brooklyn and were available to residents right at their doorsteps. At one point, there were over 200 theaters in Brooklyn. Frequented by the rich, the middle class and the working poor, they enjoyed mass popularity. With materials from 115 different theaters, the collection spans almost a century, from 1875 to 1972. The highest concentration is in the years 1890 to 1909, with approximately 450 items. -

Concentric: Literary and Cultural Studies 39.2 September 2013: 139-161 DOI: 10.6240/concentric.lit.2013.39.2.09 Complicating the Reading of Nineteenth-Century American Landscape Painting: Albert Bierstadt’s Western Visions, Aesthetics, and Sociology Michaela Keck Institute for English/American Studies Carl von Ossietzky University, Germany Abstract Albert Bierstadt’s panoramic landscapes have always polarized the general public, critics, and scholars. For some, they represent the wonders of an exceptional natural world and society; for others they express the disturbing, megalomaniac history of nineteenth-century American conquest. While such binary opposites are overly simplistic, they have continued to shape the public and scholarly debate regarding representations of American nature. Based on the notion of an aesthetic perception of nature as landscape, and on sociologist Norbert Elias’s figurational conception of the “involvement and detachment” between human spectators and nature, this article will explore the multilayered, heterogeneous cultural forces at work in Toward the Setting Sun (1862) and The Oregon Trail (1869). The contesting forces inherent in Toward the Setting Sun will be examined in the light of Bierstadt’s transcultural walking figure, while the different situational negotiations of American and European readings will help to shed light on The Oregon Trail. I will argue that Bierstadt’s Indian walking figure in Toward the Setting Sun represents the aesthetic experience of nature as landscape, as well as the protest against growing social pressures within a wider social context, and Bierstadt’s desire to market his art on the level of the individual. To Americans, The Oregon Trail likewise expresses social anxieties insofar as it reveals the aggressive capitalism of the Gilded Age and the dictates of the international marketplace. -

MADAMA BUTTERFLY SOURCE MATERIAL THE EVOLUTION OF MADAME BUTTERFLY The story of Madama Butterfly, Pucciniʼs beloved opera of the young Japanese geisha doomed to an unhappy end, still fascinates the public today. However, much like the life cycle of the butterfly, the story of Madama Butterfly underwent considerable transformation over time before the opera emerging in its present form. The beginnings of the opera can be traced back to a tabloid-like story of a young woman with a broken heart in Japan. At the turn of the 19th century, with the opening of Japan in 1894 by Commodore Matthew Perry, the publicʼs fascination with all things Japanese – japonisme - was evident in popular culture. American writer John Luther Longʼs short story, Madame Butterfly, was first published in the January 1898 issue of Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine. The author was purported inspired by a true story relayed to him by his sister, the wife of a missionary living in Nagasaki. However, French author Pierre Loti's popular semi- autobiographical novel, Madame Chrysanthème, first published in1887, also has a very similar storyline of a Japanese geisha who marries a naval officer named Pierre. Lotiʼs novel even inspired an 1893 opera version by Charles Messager. Longʼs later version of the story has the notable addition of the suicide attempt by Cho- Cho-San after her abandonment by the selfish Lieutenant Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton. At the climax of Longʼs 18-page version, Suzuki thwarts the heroineʼs suicide attempt. At the key moment, Suzuki makes Trouble, the child of Butterfly and Pinkerton cry, and Cho-Cho-San realizes that she must care for her child.
