Cumann na mBunscol News Cumann na mBunscol Munster GAA Primary Game In total, 484 primary school pupils, all in Sixth Class, will line out in this year’s Munster GAA Primary Game. This is an increase of almost 100 in the number of children who will enjoy the unique experience offered by the Primary Game. With the introduction of the new Round Robin format in this year’s Munster hurling Championship, the number of senior hurling fixtures in the province has increased from 4 to 11. The Munster Council has ensured that there will be a Primary Game match during the interval at each hurling tie. Limerick play four first round games in the Munster hurling Round Robin series. There was a Primary Game for boys at half time in the Limerick v Clare game in Ennis and Limerick v Waterford in the Gaelic Grounds. The girls played at half-time in the Limerick goalkeeper Nickie Quaid with some young players at the opening game v Tipperary and in the newly constructed Páirc launch of the Munster GAA Primary Game Uí Chaoimh on June 2nd. The backing that the Primary Game concept has received is testimony to the vision of Comhairle na Mumhan and its commitment to promoting Gaelic Games among young players. In football, there are 5 games in the Munster championship which remains in the Knock-out format. There are two Primary Game matches in each football tie, with both boys and girls playing at half-time.

The celebrations began with a stop at the shop where Mrs. Allen, our Principal treated us to ice-creams. Arriving back at school was a special moment for all of us as the whole school had lined out in a Guard of Honour. We felt like heroes as we walked together through the archway of hurleys. Parents, children and teachers cheered and clapped for us. Representing my school has been a huge privilege. It wouldn’t have been possible without my amazing team mates, we played as a team and supported each other in every game. Maybe someday we will play together for Limerick in Croke Park! Limerick City, runners up in the in a Row 2018 Mackey Cup The future of hurling in South Limerick looks bright after South Limerick won the Mackey Cup for the third year in a row. South Limerick sent out a clear message that they were not going to surrender their crown easily when they ran out clear winners against a gallant West Limerick outfit. Pierce Connery scored a total of 3-3 for the South while Liam Walsh added a point East Limerick to his early goal. Mackey Cup team Limerick City were strongly fancied to do well in this year’s competition and they advanced to the final with eight points to spare. Eamon Phelan sounded the fulltime whistle with the sides tied at 2-3 apiece. Extra time was a test of stamina as both teams grew leg-weary.

City were three points ahead with the end almost in West Limerick who played in the 2018 sight. Pierce Connery had other ideas and he scored Mackey Cup 1-1 in the closing minutes. South had pulled off a famous victory and joy was unconfined as the final blast on Eamon Phelan’s whistle sounded. After the game, Joe Lyons of Allianz Cumann na mBunscol presented the Mackey Cup to South captain Pierce Connery who had played a captain’s part, scoring 2-3 of his team’s total in the final.

They were Limerick’s Golden Generation. The programme is a fairly standard production for the time, containing 32 glossy A5 pages. It cost €2.50. This was the year the Punt changed to the Euro! To my mind, the programme cover is a bit ‘busy’ - clashing colours and a slightly irritating design hurt my eyes any time I review it in my collection. G&W

1987 Munster U-21 Hurling Championship: Limerick v Waterford

What is most unusual about this programme is the fact that it is so rare. I only came across it in the last few months, after nearly 20 years of searching, from a Waterford enthusiast who was culling his programme collection. It is not an important programme to a Waterford person but it is of great importance to a Limerick “completist” like myself. It was the 1st Round of the 1987 Munster U-21 Hurling Championship, played in Dungarvan, not that this basic information is included on this single-sided printed sheet!

Limerick won the Munster U-21 Hurling Championship title for the first time the year before (the first non-traditional county to do so in 23 attempts), beating Clare in a final replay before succumbing to Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final. In 1987, Limerick had the full power of the 1984 All Ireland winning minor winning team and made no mistake, beating Waterford, Tipperary and then Cork in the Munster final (played in Bruff). Down were accounted for in the semi-final (another very scarce programme!) before Galway were beaten in the final in Ennis - and thus was revenge exacted for the previous year’s loss!

This programme is rare for four reasons: it was a poor quality programme for a small crowd in an isolated venue for a relatively unimportant game. The programme was a free, photocopied single-sheet of poor quality foolscap paper (longer but narrower than A4 paper). It was produced by the Munster Council. Comhairle na Mumhan CLG produced team-sheets for most minor and U-21 non-finals from mid-70s to late 1980s, before proper programmes began to be produced for such games.
