Dr. Tim Creedon Retires as President During a time of unprecedented growth for the Institute and among many achievements, Tim was responsible for implementing the Strategic Plan and instrumental in developing the new Strategic Plan for the Institute which helped to facilitate a period of great strides in all facets of the college.

One of Tim’s considerable achievements was developing the Research and Innovation capabilities of the Institute and in these areas, ITT Dublin has grown to consistently punch above its weight among its Institute of Technology counterparts. He also successfully led the Institute through the Delegated Authority and Institutional Review processes, with both commendably highlighting the extremely high level of professionalism in ITT Dublin’s academic and administrative structures.

Christmas Reunion 2008

On Wednesday the 17th of December a small Christmas reunion was held in the new staffroom. Amidst Christmas tunes and decorations and a healthy amount of food and drink, a small but lively mix of staff and graduates whiled away a few festive hours. There was also enough food and drink left over to ensure the St. Vincent de Paul raffle had a nice injection of small prizes the following day, which was certainly appreciated by Sister Elizabeth and the St. Vincent de Paul. Thanks a mill to everyone who made the effort to attend.

Friend or Foe of Graduate and Alumni Associations?

In late 2008 I set up a Facebook profile for the Graduates To give an idea of the kind of usage we’re talking about Association. Since then over 700 friends who have come I’ve included their recent membership count in brackets to me to offer their virtual handshake. As a proportion which has probably gone up significantly by the time of our graduate/student base this is actually quite a lot you read this: compared to bigger colleges. Now social networking friends are generally not to be confused with the type of • Myspace (260,,000,000) friends you actually meet and chat to but that’s OK – it’s • BEBO (40,000,000) been great to see so many friend requests come in and • Badoo (13,000,000) it’s been a great development all round. For those of • Blackplanet (20,000,000) you who don’t know what Facebook is, well can I invite • Hi5 (80,000,000) you to crawl out from that rock you’ve been under and • Linkedin (35,000,000) take a sharp sniff of the coffee! • Tagged (70,000,000) • Reunion.com (50,000,000) With over 300,000,000 registered users, Facebook is one of many online social networking phenomenons of There are many, many more with lots of varied recent years, some of the other big western ones are membership databases depending on things like race, listed below. geographical location and social interests. Given its user demographic and the style of its content Facebook was probably the one most suited for our first social networking page.

“WITH OVER 300,000,000 REGISTERED USERS, FACEBOOK IS ONE OF MANY ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKING PHENOMENONS”

Social networking like Facebook has had quite an impact on graduate associations around the world and the initial reaction a few years back from many seemed to be to view them as competition rather than allies. In their defence perhaps that was just a natural instinct because it’s certainly true to say that social networking now facilitates the kind of reconnections for graduates (albeit online) that graduate associations traditionally tended to have a monopoly on which used to give them a unique selling point. But that’s no reason to despair.

All who enter and submit the correct answer are in with a shout of winning a €20 Dunnes Stores Voucher every fortnight.

All our members and Facebook friends will be notified with a weblink to each conundrum which will only take a few seconds to enter. You will also be able to get the conundrum weblink at http://alumni.ittdublin. ie/?page=dunnesconundrum so log on and bookmark that page on your computer so you can cruise over every fortnight and enter – best of luck!

New Entrance Completed In September 2008, just in time for first semester, construction was finally completed on our brand new entrance. Boasting an ultra-modern glass structure which extends further out into the front area, it provides increased space inside around the reception area and library entrance which accommodated our huge Christmas tree beautifully last Christmas.

The construction also meant works to the staff canteen which was extended and refurbished and the Presidents Office which has been relocated, extended and thoroughly modernised. A large revolving door now gives entry as well as automatic side doors and it is undoubtedly a magnificent addition to the Institute. Some might say it’s a long way to go to stop a draft, but when it looks this good, who’s worrying?

Yet, as he watches for the rituals of death the funeral cortege making the tortuous ascent towards Killeelan cemetery, he cannot help finding “the coffin lives on. and the small band of toiling mourners unbearably moving”. The following article written by Dr. Eamon Maher appeared in the Irish Times on 24th March 2009. The Country Funeral makes us aware of the transience of life, a transience that is graphically captured in the RITE AND REASON: JOHN McGAHERN passed away following lines from The Pornographer: “The womb and three years ago this month. I have been in that lovely church and cemetery myself and it enabled me to feel very close to the spirit of McGahern, who spent the majority of his life in this area. The national school where his mother Susan taught and where he attended is just down the road from the church, as are the ruins of the house in which she died. It is appropriate that the beloved mother and son now share the same grave, in the heart of the countryside that was a source of such joy to both of them.

The timing of John’s death, March 30th, could not have been more appropriate. This is the period in early spring when flowers begin to blossom, birds to sing, days to lengthen, as nature undergoes its wondrous regeneration. It is right that we should think of McGahern at such a time.

While adroit at evoking nature, he was superb in his depictions of the rituals surrounding death. The Country Funeral is rightly hailed as a classic. In it, we witness how Likewise, the laying out of Johnny’s corpse in That three brothers, John, Philly and Fonsie Ryan, undergo They May Face the Rising Sun assumes a particular a change in their relationship as they travel west from metaphysical resonance for the agnostic Ruttledge: “The Dublin to attend the funeral of the maternal uncle, rectum absorbed almost all of the cotton wool. I think the next and most current chapter in my life has taken a few people by surprise. Shortly after graduating I accepted a post-doctoral fellowship from Professor Pam Sokol at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. The University has a great reputation and is quite advanced in specific areas of Cystic Fibrosis research, and I suppose it’s not a bad thing that the city of Calgary is at the foot of the Rocky mountain range and has some fantastic scenery. My current project has funding for two years and involves examining the quorum sensing regulation of virulence genes in Burkholderia cenocepacia. It’s a fantastic opportunity and gives me the chance to learn some valuable new techniques as well as meet lots of interesting people.

The move from my life in Tallaght to Calgary has happened so quickly and the time is flying by. Outside of work, I’m getting to enjoy a wonderful new country. I’ve travelled a bit already, but am keen to take full advantage of this beautiful part of the world by seeing as much of it as my time here will allow. So at the moment I am taking full advantage of the sunny skies and heavy snowfalls by taking up skiing and using my weekends to get to know Calgary, my new home for the next two years.
