As per the Divine Scripture knowledge steps in human species just after the creation of Adam (peace be on him) and making his stay in the Paradise. In this connection the holy Qur‘an says, “And He (Allah taught Adam the name of the things i.e knowledge and presented him before the angels…..” (al- Baqarah 2, V.32). Then driven out of the Paradise with his wife Haw‘a to the mundane world for violating Allah’s edict at the instigation of the satan, and after long times’ repentance Allah forgave them and bestowed on him the right guidance in the form of Islam to conduct their lives along with their descendants in this world. It is, therefore, discernable that knowledge was first infused in man to understand Islam, the code of life in totality when conducting their life in this visible world. Then Islam, in the concept of whole hearted surrender to the will of Allah, the Lord of the universe, was chosen for mankind as the only right path to walk on till the last day of the world. The common factors of Islam from Adam, the first Prophet (peace be on him) to Muhammad (peace be on him), the last and the seal of the prophets were the strict adherence to tawhid or oneness of Allah and unequivocal belief in the Prophet of the time and all prophets of the succeeding ages. In the consideration of gradual development of its tenets and other pertinent dogmas from Adam (sm) to Muhammad (sm) Islam had three broad time spans to reach the finality. The first time span starts with Adam (sm) and ends in Nuh (sm); the second one starts with Nuh (sm)and ends in Musa (sm) and the third one begins with Musa’s fight with tyrant Amaliqa tribe and spreads over the whole time of Prophet Muhammad (sm) till the last day of the doom. In the embryo of the first time span Islam deals with the basic fundamentals along with pertinent paraphernalia as the cases and situation deem necessary to guide the people of the then time. The prophets were enjoined to lead their people as per the revelations came to them from Allah, the Almighty Lord as the occasions demand. But the concept of complete form of the Shariah did not originate in this period. It was rather originated in the time of Nuh (sm) of second time span. As it echoes in the holy Qur‘an, “Of the religion He established the Shariah for you as that which He enjoined on Professor Emeritus, Islamic History and Culture, University of Rajshahi 2 wimvP© Rvb©vj, Bmjv‡gi BwZnvm I ms¯‹…wZ Nuh …………..those who turn to Him.” (Ash-Shura 42, V.13). Gradually with needed commandments and rituals the Shariah gained a proper shape except that of Jihad i.e the fight against the infidels and wrong- doers. When transgression, infidelity and wrongs exceeded the limits then the Divine punishment fell on them and destructed them root and branch. The examples of Nuh‘s flood, and the punishment of Namrud, Haman, Ferawn, Qarun and the like are cases in point. After the destruction of Ferawn no Divine punishment found to be meted out on the wrong doers, rather Prophet Musa (sm) was enjoined upon to fight the tyrant people i.e the Amaliqa tribe. (al- Qur‘an, ai-Ma‘idah 5, V.24). Thenceforth Jihad being considered as one of the pillars of religion completed the concept of the Shariah and to be continued till the end of this world. It is, therefore, found that Islam started with Adam (sm) crossed a long way of challenges and development, and finally reached the point of perfection in Prophet Muhammad’s time. Regarding this maxim the holy Quran declares, “Today I (Allah) have completed for you the religion, have given you My bounties in full and I am pleased to select for you the Islam as Din i.e complete code of life.” (al-Ma‘idah 5, V.3). Knowledge as bestowed on man is of two kinds from the view-point of its origination viz. knowledge through revelation and knowledge by acquisition. The former is unquestionable and descended on the Prophets through Jibril, the messenger of Allah for the guidance of mankind while the latter can be acquired exercising the power of intellects which may lead one to right course or may lead to erroneous life perceptions. In any case Islam, as the complete code of life, encourages man to search for knowledge from the cradle to the grave for the benefit of himself and for the good of humanity at large. This paper aims at dealing with nature and intrinsic merit of knowledge in Islam and its dissemination in various ways and channels under the Muslims till the fall of Baghdad in 1258 AD.] The physical world, since its creation revolves round on knowledge, and it being a luminous gem emanates from Allah, the Creator of earth and heaven with the inmates deemed necessary to keep everything on motion.
