Anne Boleyn is dead, decapitated in the space of a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As her remains are bundled into oblivion, Thomas Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The blacksmith’s son from Putney emerges from the spring’s bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry VIII, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen, before Jane dies giving birth to the male heir he most craves. Cromwell is a man with only his wits to rely on; he has no great family to back him, no private army. Despite rebellion at home, traitors plotting abroad and the threat of invasion testing Henry’s regime to breaking point, Cromwell’s robust imagination sees a new country in the mirror of the future. But can a nation, or a person, shed the past like a skin? Do the dead continually unbury themselves? What will you do, the Spanish ambassador asks Cromwell, when the king turns on you, as sooner or later he turns on everyone close to him? With The Mirror and the Light, Hilary Mantel brings to a triumphant close the trilogy she began with Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. She traces the final years of Thomas Cromwell, the boy from nowhere who climbs to the heights of power, offering a defining portrait of predator and prey, of a ferocious contest between present and past, between royal will and a common man’s vision: of a modern nation making itself through conflict, passion and courage. 9780007480999 £25.00 March 05, 2020 Hardback Fourth Estate Historical Fiction Standard Hardback The Independent Bookshop special edition of The Mirror and the Light includes exclusive material from Hilary Mantel about, amongst other things, the books that inspired the series, the poetry of Thomas Wyatt and Tudor jellies. The music is playing. But the party can’t last. With the Blitz over and London reeling from war, jazz musician Lawrie Matthews has answered England’s call for help. Fresh off the Empire Windrush, he’s taken a tiny room in south London lodgings, and has fallen in love with the girl next door. Touring Soho’s music halls by night, pacing the streets as a postman by day, Lawrie has poured his heart into his new home – and it’s alive with possibility. Until, one morning, he makes a terrible discovery. As the local community rallies, fingers of blame are pointed at those who had recently been welcomed with open arms. And, before long, the newest arrivals become the prime suspects in a tragedy which threatens to tear the city apart. Atmospheric, poignant and compelling, Louise Hare’s debut shows that new arrivals have always been the prime suspects. • Reality TV and the Reinvention of Britishness
From Making Do to Making-Over: Reality TV and the Reinvention of Britishness RACHEL JENNINGS O YOU LIVE IN TRACK SUITS TO CONCEAL YOUR SAGGY TITS AND big bum? Do not despair—you can still go to the ball. If you Dare brave enough to face those scary godmothers Trinny and Susannah, they will tell you in no uncertain terms What Not to Wear. Do you suspect your garden may have inspired T. S. Eliot to write The Wasteland? No fear. The matey experts from Ground Force can transform it into a pastoral idyll in two days. Has your pokey, gloomy British house been stagnating on the market? Perhaps you need the infamous House Doctor to breeze through and eradicate both your personal history and personality with a few cans of magnolia. A significant proportion of British reality TV is in the makeover line, involving the rapid transformation of some facet of a person’s lifestyle through a process that blends fairytale themes with religious ritual. The subject (or victim) on each episode is a Cinderella character (hereafter referred to collectively as ‘‘Cindy,’’ whether an individual, couple, or family unit) who relinquishes existential responsibility and personal power to one or more authority figures. These fairy god- mothers (of both sexes) navigate Cindy through a battle to give up the past leading to her rebirth, frequently on the third or seventh day. It is easy to comprehend why makeover shows are a hit in the United States—they slot neatly into the American dream of con- stant reinvention of the self, played out on a moving frontier.

All Party Parliamentary Group for the Teaching Profession Minutes of the meeting held on Monday 21 May 2018 at 4.00-6.00pm in Committee Room 6, Palace of Westminster 1. Welcome Ian Mearns MP welcomed attendees to the meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group for the Teaching Profession to the meeting. 2. Introductions Ian Mearns MP introduced members and attendees and welcomed representatives from the National Audit Office and Ofsted. 3. Teacher Recruitment and Retention: reality bites (John Howson) John reported That it was a difficult time of year as we are approaching the end of the recruitment cycle for September and that there were pressures from funding and pupil numbers. That for the present recruitment round the number of trainees on a 1yr programme was presenting serious concerns in regards to English, Business Studies, Design & Technology, Computer Science and Music. That it was expected there would be a 50% vacancy level and the only subjects where there were no concerns was in PE, Geography and History. That there was wide regional variations with high volumes of vacancies advertised within London and the Home counties. That there had been a significant increase at intake end and these areas had the highest number of independent schools. Of particular concern is the number of NQTs available to the “pool” at the end of the training year i.e. not recruited in their placement school and therefore available to supply the national teacher market. That the within the North East there was more indications of funding pressures however there were fewer vacancies than last year.

  • Lady Thatcher Celebrated Her 80Th Birthday Last
LADY THATCHER CELEBRATED HER 80TH BIRTHDAY LAST NIGHT WITH 650 GUESTS Andrew Pierce reports The Times Friday, October 14, 2005 BARONESS THATCHER had the perfect excuse to be a little late last night for her 80th birthday party in the presence of the Queen, Tony Blair and some unlikely names from the show-business world. She was delayed by an unexpected telephone call from President Bush wishing her a happy birthday. The ten- minute call from the White House was the latest in a series of tributes that poured in from around the world. It marked yet another highlight in the life of a woman who still casts a huge shadow over the Conservative Party. The red carpet was rolled out for Lady Thatcher, who was dressed in a navy blue cocktail coat and silk chiffon dress designed by Camilla Milton. Lady Thatcher, who looked frail, made no public comment as a crowd of wellwishers lined the streets to catch a glimpse of Britain's first woman Prime Minister. The 650-strong guest list was a roll call of honour from the 1980s Thatcher heyday. Michael Portillo, who was once seen as her anointed heir, made a surprise appearance. He said: "She was influential in her day but not now." But the former Prime Minister also sprinkled the list with some surprise names from both sides of the political divide. The Queen, in a shimmering silver dress, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the Prime Minister were the principal guests at the drinks party in the gold-embossed ballroom of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Hyde Park, in Knightsbridge.

  • Penguin Group Announces 2004 Results
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PENGUIN GROUP ANNOUNCES 2004 RESULTS New York, New York, February 28, 2005…. Penguin Group [all companies around the world, including DK] today reported its operating results for the year ending December 31, 2004. Underlying revenues were flat and underlying operating profits down, compared with the previous year. The Group reports its results in sterling, and the single largest factor in the decline in reported operating profits was the weak dollar. Among the factors affecting the decline in underlying operating profits was the disruption to the company’s UK distribution and weakness in the US consumer publishing marketplace in the second half of the year. Penguin Group is part of Pearson (FTSE: PSON; NYSE: PSO), the international media company. In the U.S., Penguin Group (USA) profits remained high while revenues showed only a slight increase over the previous year as a result of the significant market weakness in the third and fourth quarters. Market shortfalls and soft sales in the U.S. were being blamed on the distractions caused by the U.S. presidential election and the news coverage of the war in Iraq. By year end, Penguin Group (USA), like almost everyone else in the industry, felt the effects of a downturn in the market. David Shanks, CEO of Penguin Group (USA), said, “In 2004, the corporation's record New York Times bestseller performance was up across all categories, including hardcover, paperback and young readers. The Group delivered 132 bestsellers--an all time high. We placed 20 first-time authors on The New York Times bestseller list and launched more than 35 new careers in fiction.
