10 | The Boardwalk Journal | October 2013 The ongoing trial involving former Chief of Police John Mooney and his fight against the city of Atlantic City in the Atlantic County Superior Court Civil Division has been a real barn burner, courtesy of fiery testimony from Mooney, Mayor Lorenzo Langford, former Public Safety Director Christine Peterson, former PBA President / mayoral candidate Dave Davidson, former Atlantic City Business Administrator Michael Scott and last but not least, the distinguished former Atlantic County Prosecutor Theodore FL Housel, who now maintains a law office in Mays Landing proper. Despite a reputation for snarkiness on this particular page, we are going to refrain from highlighting some of the trials more memorable gaffes and instead focus on the commendable job that Press of Atlantic City reporter Jennifer Bogdan has done in covering the trial. Next month when we have our bi-monthly pinochle game with new Press owner Warren Buffett, we will be sure to mention Ms. Bogdan and her spectacular work in covering the Mooney trial …

Speaking of burlesque shows, Scores Atlantic City is open and in full swing, both figuratively and literally on the second floor of Trump Taj Mahal. GM Vince Spena assured us that only the finest adult entertainers from all over the country would be working at Scores and when we stopped in on opening night to see the talent that Vince had helped assemble, we came away impressed with the diverse nature of the Scores Atlantic City roster, specifically a full blooded Sicilian entertainer named Gina from Ohio. Who knew they had Sicilians or even adult entertainers in Ohio? Nonetheless, kudos to Vince and the team from Scores for finding her and bringing her to Atlantic City. HBO’s Boardwalk Empire is so bad this season, it’s almost unwatchable. The show now resembles a poorly written Vaudeville musical every Sunday night and has most viewers longing for the days of Tony Soprano and Paulie Walnuts and watching Boardwalk Empire only to see if that Mickey with the annoying laugh gets whacked …

The Boardwalk Journal | October 2013 | 21 Garden state Academy Preschool of the Arts

Garden State Academy Preschool of the Arts is a brand new program in the Atlantic County area. The highlight of Garden State Academy isn’t just the amazing art and music program but the "home away from home" atmosphere. Children are inspired to create, as we emphasize it's about the process not the product. The teaching staff builds upon the child's current knowledge in all subject areas. We encourage both small group and individualized learning. We teach to the individual child according to his or her own learning style. The Master level teachers have studied child development for years and are able to facilitate this type of process. As keen observers and documenters, we study each child and how he/she learns best. Our learning is hands on and the students’ interests lead the way! Tracey (Campbell) House, Owner/Director was inspired to create a school that taught to the individual child, in a safe and secure environment. Garden State Academy is simply that, a school. "We are not a daycare, but a school with teachers that are ready to teach our high level learners or boost our students that need extra support. It's about understanding child development and the early years of learning. The first experience in school only happens one time. Teachers in preschool can really affect how a child learns and their love for learning. My own experience as a mother, teacher, administrator and professor lead me to open Garden State Academy and bring something of this caliber to our area." We welcome all level learners and have a full kindergarten curriculum on site for our high level learners. Garden State Academy Preschool of the Arts offers a unique preschool experience, the doors opened in September and while our name is new, our teaching staff is not! This has made for a very smooth opening. Space is limited and on a first come first serve basis. Garden StateAcademy is conveniently located off of the Garden State Parkway, Garden State Academy is located in Galloway and only 10 minutes from Northfield, Egg Harbor Township, Mays Landing and other neighboring towns. Call 609-241-1304 for more information or a tour.

A Sisterhood of Strength: The Fight Against Breast Cancer By: Felicia Lowenstein Niven

34 | The Boardwalk Journal | October 2013 Nothing can prepare you for that phone call. The initial shock, the denial, the ensuing panic—“How am I going to tell the kids?”—and the dull ache as you come to terms with the fact that whatever you were doing up until now is no longer that important. Suddenly life comes into sharp focus. You have breast cancer. And it’s time to start the fight.

It’s not as uncommon as you might think. One in eight women—one of your friends, your sisters, your mother… even you—will receive that terrifying, gut-wrenching news. It’s a statistical certainty. Breast cancer will strike more than 200,000 U.S. women (and men) this year and nearly 40,000 will die from the disease.

In recognition of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we talk candidly with five area women whose lives have been touched by breast cancer in some way. Importantly, cancer does not define these women. Rather it is the beginning of their journeys of strength. A Sisterhood of Strength: With enduring hope, they proudly wear their pink The Fight Against Breast Cancer ribbons and inspire others to do the same.

The Boardwalk Journal | October 2013 | 35 Chrissy Alexander with husband Chris and son Jake

Chrissy Alexander “I have a grateful heart. There isn’t a day that I’m not grateful to be alive.”

Chrissy Alexander’s knees nearly buckled underneath her. She had suspected that the lump she discovered in her breast might have been cancer. But she had beat cancer once already—Hodgkin’s Disease—and she thought that maybe, just maybe that this time it was nothing.

But the phone call confirmed it. It was breast cancer. And Chrissy, at age 34, began the battle again. The treatment would involve surgery. The most difficult part, she thought, was having to be separated from her three-year-old son, Jake. They were very close.

“I went to his bedroom the night before the surgery,” she remembers. “I told him that I had a ‘boo boo’ that needed to be removed. And he asked to see it. I showed him the bruise where they had done the biopsy and he looked at me with solemn eyes. ‘Mommy, you’re going to be just fine,’ he said. It was the message that I carried with me through the whole experience.”

The single mastectomy happened in September 1992. Chrissy was treated with chemotherapy until April or May of the following year. And in June, she asked her surgeon about having her other breast removed.

“I buried my sister at age 34 because of breast cancer,” said Chrissy. “I wasn’t taking any chances. When he immediately said yes, I asked him why he didn’t suggest it when I had my other breast removed. He told me that some women felt as if it were mutilation. He wanted it to be my decision.”

Through the whole process, Chrissy depended on a dedicated support network made up of her husband, son, mother, sisters and brothers. “We all live in the area, except for one sister who moved to Philadelphia. We’ve always been close. We’re always there for each other.” 36 | The Boardwalk Journal | October 2013 Chrissy could depend upon her mom showing up on the doorstep every time she needed her to help take care of Jake. Tragically, after Chrissy was diagnosed, her mother also contracted breast cancer, and then lung cancer, which ultimately led to her passing. “I still remember how she used to show up with her suitcase on my front porch,” said Chrissy.

While family and friends helped in many different ways, Chrissy’s husband injected a much-needed sense of humor at key points in the process. “I remember when Reach to Recovery made a visit to the house,” said Chrissy. Reach to Recovery is a program of the American Cancer Society to help cancer patients deal with the disease. “This woman brought lingerie with prosthetics and I looked at it and thought, this isn’t for me. My husband turned over the prosthetics, which were hollow inside so they wouldn’t be too heavy, and said, ‘I think we should take two. They’d make great M&M dishes.’ The woman probably thought we were nuts but I couldn’t stop laughing.”

It’s been 21 years since her breast cancer diagnosis and Chrissy often is called upon to talk to women who are newly diagnosed. “My advice is to take one day at a time. Sometimes you have to take one hour at a time. Chemo was the toughest. I remember when I was battling Hodgkin’s and they tacked on another three months of chemo at the end of my treatment. I called my mother and said, I’m not going to do it. She told me that there’s going to be a time when I look back and think that three months is really a very small amount of time, even though it seems like forever now. And that this time next year, I’d be feeling wonderful. I did the chemo after all, and she was right.”

On a side note, young Jake—who accompanied Chrissy to every doctor’s appointment, hospital visit and treatment—is now 24 and studying to be a doctor. He’s considering becoming a breast cancer surgeon.

“It’s amazing how life unfolds,” said Chrissy. “I just continue to have a grateful heart.”

Cheryl Banks “The New Hope Baptist Church was my lifeline. I needed the inspiration. And I’m convinced that the people praying for me made the difference.”

The day that Cheryl Banks lost her hair, she was by herself. It was how she preferred it. Her husband was at work. One daughter was at college and the other no longer lived at home. So Cheryl methodically ran her hands through her hair, which was coming out in clumps, and put it in a bag. By the time Wilbur Banks came home from work, his wife looked dramatically different.

“When he saw me, I think that’s when he knew this was serious,” she said. Then his sense of humor kicked in, as he tried to make her smile.

“Well, they said for better or worse. And here we are.”

She recalls the moment with love, and describes her husband as “her rock.” “He really stepped up,” she said. “He didn’t want me to work, but just focus on my recovery. He would watch to see that I ate. And I never knew he was such a good cook.”

The Boardwalk Journal | October 2013 | 37 The last time Cheryl had taken time off work had been for the birth of her two daughters, now adults. So taking off for the bulk of a year was pretty significant. But as she describes, the timing worked. “I work for the City of Atlantic City and it was a pretty volatile time,” she remembered. “It removed me from the chaos of it all.”

Cheryl, who happens to be Mayor Langford’s sister, had the total support from a loving family. In fact, her three brothers and her mother were the first ones she told when she was first diagnosed. They—and her New Hope Baptist Church family—stood by her throughout the ordeal. Dr. John W. Howard, pastor, was especially inspirational.

Two surgeries, sixteen rounds of chemo and 33 treatments of radiation took Cheryl from April through mid- December. Through it all, she never missed a Sunday at church.

“I would get my chemo on Wednesday,” she explained. “Then I’d run any errands right after, because I knew that I’d be down for the count for the next couple of days. But by Saturday night, I’d be bouncing around the house. Church was so crucial for me during this time. I’m a very spiritual person, and this allowed me to draw closer to my Heavenly Father. As a result, although this was a very stressful time, it was also one of the best times of my life. Because it allowed me a new perspective.”

She doesn’t sweat the small stuff anymore. “Live, Laugh, Love is my mantra,” said Cheryl. “I’m grateful that I’ve been given another opportunity to wake up every morning and see the sky. I sit in my yard and just marvel at how blue it is. I have a greater respect and appreciation now for life.”

She also carries other reminders of her experience. One is a group of women, fellow cancer survivors who were treated at the same time in Dr. Nazha’s office. “We call ourselves the ‘Bosom Buddies,’” she said with a giggle. “We forged a real bond, and even now we’ll get together.”

As for women who may find themselves in a similar situation, Cheryl has some advice. “Surround yourself with a group of people who can pour strength into you,” she said. “And look forward. Focus on your future.” Shirley Mae Goldberg, Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Assistance Fund “The magic word is awareness.”

Her name is synonymous with help. The breast cancer assistance fund started in her honor has offered relief to countless women and men struggling with the unanticipated medical, emotional, and financial burdens of breast cancer. Whether paying for wigs, prostheses, or prescribed medications that insurance simply doesn’t cover, the Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Assistance Fund has been an invaluable source of support. And Shirley Mae Goldberg was the inspiration.

Diagnosed with breast cancer at age 69, Shirley couldn’t quite believe it. In fact, she sought a second opinion that very same day. Yes, it was definitely cancer.

“It was so absolutely earth shattering, I cannot explain it if you haven’t experienced it,” she said. “You go for a routine checkup. You just don’t expect it.”

The doctors put Shirley on a regimen of nine months of chemotherapy followed by 10 years on pills. 38 | The Boardwalk Journal | October 2013 “We went for chemo every three weeks,” she said. “I was constantly sick. By the nineteenth day, when I was feeling more like myself, it all began again. It was a horrible year. But by the holidays, when the kids came down to Florida to visit us, I was just about myself again—and my hair had grown back.”

The following August, Shirley was invited to come up for her son Roy’s annual fundraising golf tournament. “He was always raising funds for this cause and that,” she explained. Well, this year, there was a surprise. Roy announced the Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Assistance Fund, inspired by his mother. Shirley was proud and humbled.

“It was a complete surprise,” she said. “I had no idea. But here we are, 13 years later and look at all that we’ve been able to do. It’s an honor and a privilege.”

The Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Awareness Fund is run entirely by volunteers. One hundred percent of the donations are used to help cancer patients. (The nonprofit corporation is also a tax-exempt organization if you wish to donate at www.shirleymaefund.org.)

Each year, hundreds of survivors come to the Atlantic City Boardwalk on Mother’s Day weekend to support the fund’s major fundraiser, the Shirley Mae Race & Walk. (Shirley has been there every year but one when she was ill.) It’s an amazing, upbeat event, highlighted by pink, the color for breast cancer awareness. Mothers and daughters march side by side. So do sisters, family members and friends. For many, the event has become an annual tradition.

“The important thing is awareness and this event promotes awareness,” said Shirley. “Awareness is the magic word. You must go for your mammograms, for your checkups. I can’t stress that enough. The earlier you get a breast cancer diagnosis, the better your chance for survival. Back when I first was diagnosed, you didn’t even talk about cancer. You called it ‘the big C.’ But we have to talk about it. It’s important to talk about it. Talking about it can save your life.”

As for her own experience, Shirley said having cancer definitely changed her outlook on life. “It’s a tremendous awakening experience,” she said. “It teaches you to stay positive, no matter what. I always say, it gives me a purpose to live for, a self to live with and a faith to live by.” Linnea Brown, BA, RN, OCN, AtlantiCare Breast Health Coordinator “These are amazing women, and they inspire me every day.” Linnea Brown is not a cancer survivor. But she knows more about this emotional, high stakes process than the average nurse—or even the average oncology nurse. That’s because for the past 13 years, she’s had a special role of guiding cancer patients through the process of treatment and recovery.

“When AtlantiCare began this program, it was a relatively new aspect of nursing,” said Linnea. “Now the term nurse navigator is more common.”

Linnea was pulled for the role because of her nine years’ experience on the oncology floor followed by time working in a clinical trial for women at high risk for cancer.

“It used to be that cancer was treated as part of a hospital stay,” said Linnea. “As a result, we really got to know the patients and form relationships with them. They were so open about sharing. They shared things with us that they couldn’t share with their families, and we were there at those pivotal life-changing moments, good or bad. I truly believe that they were my teachers, and hopefully I’ve been able to share some of their wisdom with those who have come after them.” The Boardwalk Journal | October 2013 | 39 These days, breast cancer treatment is much more of an outpatient process, which makes a nurse navigator helpful. Linnea is with them from the time of diagnosis.

“I usually contact them or they reach out to me,” she said. “A big part of my role is educator. I review everything with them, the pathology, the treatment options. I will go with them to the medical oncologist, radiation oncologist or surgical appointment if they’d like me to be there. I don’t tell them what to do, but I tell them the questions I would want to ask. Sometimes the process is so overwhelming that everything shuts down, and you can’t hear it all. So it’s my role to say, let’s step back and take a look.”

Linnea is there with them on the day of surgery. She calls them the day before to let them know what to expect, including what they’ll see and hear, to make them more comfortable. If they spend the night, she visits them with discharge instructions. She’ll help them tap into community resources, from the Shirley Mae Cancer Assistance Fund and Gilda’s Club to programs that help them look good and feel better. And she makes herself available for any questions, even years down the road. “People do call, even years later, because of the relationship,” she noted.

Amazingly enough, Linnea hears very few complaints. “There are very few who have said, ‘why me?’ Most women tell me that they would not have wanted breast cancer, but that they’ve become a better and wiser person as a result. They value family, friends, spirituality, beautiful weather, things that people who don’t face life-threatening issues take for granted. I’m blessed to know them. They have taught me beyond words.”

As for her advice to breast cancer patients, she said, “Take a deep breath. There will be good days and bad days. You’ll get through it and you’ll do it one step at a time.” Erin McAllister, MSW, LSW, OSW-C, Program Director, Gilda’s Club South Jersey “I can’t imagine working anywhere else.”

It was her first day on the job and Erin McAllister was completely alone. Her colleagues had stepped out for a meeting. So when there came a knock on the door, Erin sprang into action, eager to help. The woman behind the door literally fell into her arms.

“She had just come from the doctor’s office where she was diagnosed with cancer,” explained Erin. “She was beside herself; she didn’t know where to go. She knew she had to tell her husband and her kids but didn’t know how. So she came to Gilda’s Club.”

That’s when Erin realized the importance of her job. “It was my task to support and empower her. I spent a lot of time listening, and then talking about her family dynamics. I think it helped to know that she could bring her family here and we would all go through it together.”

It’s not easy but Erin is up to the task. The letters behind her name show that she’s trained in social work with a specialization in cancer. Her career choice was a natural result of a major in psychology coupled with a life-changing experience.

40 | The Boardwalk Journal | October 2013 “My best friend Noelle’s mother died from ovarian cancer when we were both in grad school,” said Erin. “To see Noelle go through that experience was heart wrenching. I wanted to help.”

Gilda’s Club was the obvious choice, and so when a position opened up in Atlantic City, Erin jumped on it. This December, she will have been there 11 years.

“It’s a myth that Gilda’s Club is just for patients,” she explained. “It is absolutely a cancer support community for people touched by cancer in any way. That includes patients, survivors, family members, friends, caregivers, people who lost someone to cancer, people whose loved one has cancer but is several states away. The program addresses the needs of everyone.”

Erin listed the types of activities, which range from support and networking groups facilitated by licensed professionals to educational lectures to healthy lifestyle and social activities. “We might have a yoga or zumba class, or maybe a creative writing workshop,” she said. “We’ll have a potluck dinner or jazz night, and of course Noogiefest, our annual kids’ Halloween party is very popular.”

“This is about members giving and receiving emotional and social support,” she explained. “There’s something invaluable about sitting on the couch with a survivor who has had your type of cancer, and being able to ask the detail questions. What are the side effects? How did you deal with mouth sores? This is different from the support they may get from their family. This is from someone who knows what it’s like to be there.”

In a similar way, caregivers can voice their fears and anxieties in a safe forum. They may not want to discuss them with their loved one.

Importantly, there’s never a charge for a service from Gilda’s Club. Membership is free. But there’s no federal funding, or income from Gilda’s Club’s affiliation with the Cancer Support Community. That means the organization depends solely on donations. And if you donate to the South Jersey organization, Erin guarantees that those funds will be used in this community. (See www.gildasclubsouthjersey.org for more information.)

“That’s money you’re giving to help people you know,” she said. “It could be your child’s teacher or the neighbor down the street.”

“There is a ton of hope out there,” added Erin. “When you come to Gilda’s Club, you learn that people learn how to live with cancer. We’re so lucky to have a Gilda’s Club here. It’s a gift to be part of this community.”

The Boardwalk Journal | October 2013 | 41 Atlantic Medical Imaging… The Breast Imaging Specialists

This year, more than 200,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer. While breast cancer is still one of the leading causes of death in women, there is good news. The survival rate for women who have been diagnosed and treated early continues to improve.

Mammography is the single most effective way to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. Early detection improves survival rates and increases treatment options. The American Cancer Society recommends routine screening mammography should begin at age 40. Some physicians recommend screening beginning at a younger age for women with certain risk factors and continuing throughout a woman’s lifetime. Screening should continue throughout a woman’s lifetime. Once is not enough.

Because screening mammography is so important in identifying breast cancer at the earliest, most treatable stages, it is vital that women choose a breast imaging center with the highest level of clinical expertise and access to advanced screening and diagnostic technologies.

WHAT SETS ATLANTIC MEDICAL IMAGING APART

Expertise. AMI’s team of female, breast imaging specialists, led by Dr. Peggy Avagliano, are dedicated to providing the most accurate and timely diagnostics, in a comfortable and relaxing environment. AMI’s breast imaging specialists are all fellowship trained and understand the spectrum of breast imaging, from routine mammograms to breast biopsies.

Each year, AMI’s team of breast imaging specialists read over 50,000 mammograms and performs over 1,000 minimally invasive breast biopsies. When choosing a center for breast imaging, consider the team of breast imaging specialists who will be performing and interpreting your exam, as well as the equipment being used. Both can impact your outcome.

42 | The Boardwalk Journal | October 2013 Nationally Recognized. AMI has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. The Breast Imaging Center of Excellence signifies that AMI provides services at the highest standards of the radiology profession. AMI’s personnel are well qualified, through education and certification, to perform and interpret medical images. The advanced technology is appropriate for the tests and treatments patients receive, and the facility meets or exceeds quality assurance and safety guidelines.

Convenience. Breast imaging services are available at all six AMI locations in Atlantic and Cape May counties, as well as additional locations in Ocean and Monmouth counties. Evening and weekend appointments are available for added convenience.

Atlantic Medical Imaging offers a full range of breast imaging services, including digital mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and breast biopsy. The breast imaging program at Atlantic Medical Imaging has been accredited by the American College of Radiology as well as the Food and Drug Administration.

TYPES OF BREAST IMAGING STUDIES

Digital Mammography Digital Mammography is the single most effective way to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. All Atlantic Medical Imaging offices are equipped with Digital Mammography, the latest innovation in breast imaging. Digital Mammography assists in the early detection of breast cancer by incorporating modern electronics and computers into x-ray mammography methods. Instead of acquiring an image on film, the image is collected electronically and can be stored directly into a computer.

Breast Ultrasound Breast Ultrasound is an important component of overall breast care. The primary use of breast ultrasound is to help diagnose a breast mass detected by a physician during a physical exam and to characterize a potential mass seen on mammography. Ultrasound uses sound waves to image the breast and evaluate blood flow or lack of flow in any breast mass. Since sound does not travel through air optimally, a gel is placed on the breast during the procedure. Ultrasound can determine if a mass seen on mammography is cystic or solid. Cysts are almost always benign (not cancer).

Breast MRI Breast MRI is a non-invasive procedure that radiologists can use to determine what the inside of the breast looks like. No radioactivity is involved. The test may be used to distinguish between benign (not cancer) and malignant lesions. Breast MRI is an excellent problem solving technology and is often used to investigate concerns first detected with mammography, physical exam, or other imaging exams. Breast MRI is not a replacement for mammography or ultrasound imaging, but rather a supplemental tool for detecting and staging breast cancer and other breast abnormalities.

Breast Biopsy Sometimes the radiologist discovers findings that are suspicious enough to warrant biopsy. If a biopsy has been recommended, do not panic. Radiologists recommend biopsy on any lesion that has a greater than 3 percent chance of being cancer; therefore, most lesions that are biopsied are not cancer. Most biopsies can be performed without a trip to the operating room.

The Boardwalk Journal | October 2013 | 43 AMI Offering Free Mammograms This October Free screenings offered to uninsured women age 40 and over in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Galloway, NJ - In the fight against breast cancer, early detection saves lives. The health care experts at Atlantic Medical Imaging are doing their part by offering women who are uninsured, age 40 or older, and with no current or previous breast issues, the opportunity to receive a free screening mammogram this October.

“We all know that annual mammograms are vitally important,” said Dr. Peggy Avagliano, head of women’s imaging at AMI. “We don’t believe any woman should have to forgo important health care screenings due to lack of insurance.”

The goal of screening exams is to find cancers before they start to spread and cause symptoms. Breast cancers found early during screening exams are far more likely to be smaller and contained, greatly improving the chances of successful treatment.

AMI will be providing free mammograms to those who quality at all nine office locations in Atlantic, Cape May Ocean and Monmouth counties. The program is funded through the generous support of the AMI Foundation. To schedule an appointment, call (609) 677-XRAY (9729)

The Boardwalk Journal | October 2013 | 45 “Fall” into a Healthier Lifestyle with AtlantiCare

Why wait until the start of a new year to make simple lifestyle changes to improve your health? As the lazy, blazing days of summer wind down and you ease back into a more structured schedule, fall is a perfect time to recharge your healthy-living routine.

AtlantiCare, southeastern New Jersey’s leading healthcare provider, offers these helpful ideas:

Make your move. Regular exercise is a building block of lifelong good health. With summer’s heat and humidity replaced by refreshing autumn air, October is a great month to get outside for a bike ride, a hike, a round of golf, or a long walk on the beach. Find activities you enjoy, and do them for at least 30 minutes every day. Start now and you’ll have good habits in place when the holidays arrive.

Enjoy the fall harvest. Fill your basket with fresh fall fruits and vegetables from a local farmer’s market, roadside stand or pick-your-own farm. Aim for at least 5 servings every day of red, green, yellow, orange, and blue/purple produce.

Rethink your plate. The winter holidays – and the season of rich meals, sweet treats and other indulgences – are fast approaching. If weight control is a priority, do what you can now to curb calories. For example, eat smaller portions, and cut back on dietary fat, sugar, and other sources of empty calories.

Switch from sweet drinks. AtlantiCare recommends zero servings per day of drinks sweetened with sugar. Not just regular soda – but also sweet tea, sports drinks, energy drinks, sweetened coffee drinks, juices, and fruit-flavored beverages. Better choices: water (add flavor with a fresh lemon or lime slice), seltzer, low-fat or fat-free milk, unsweetened tea or coffee, or fresh fruit (instead of fruit juice).

Take a class. AtlantiCare offers a wide variety of health-education classes for community members of all ages – from weight-loss surgery seminars, to programs on bone and spine health, safe babysitting, childbirth preparation, heart health, women’s health, and more.

Scale down your screen time. The winter months mean more time doing indoor activities. Try to limit your “screen time” to no more than two hours per day sitting at the computer or watching TV.

Call 1-888-569-1000 for information on AtlantiCare’s health services or events, or visit www.atlanticare.org to find a program that will help you “fall” into a healthier lifestyle.

46 || The Boardwalk Journal | October 2013 Tilton Fitness In The Fight Against Breast Cancer

Despite the advances in modern medicine, one in eight American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives, according to the American Cancer Society in 2012. An even more sobering statistic estimates that more than 200,000 women will be newly diagnosed and nearly 40,000 women will lose their battle with the disease every year. That means that while one new case of breast cancer is diagnosed every two minutes, one woman will die of breast cancer roughly every 13 minutes which is why supporting ongoing research efforts is so vitally important as we encourage women take a proactive approach to their breast health.

When it comes to the fight against Breast Cancer, spreading awareness about cancer screenings and early detection means spreading the word which is exactly what Tilton Fitness is endeavoring to do. In honor of breast cancer awareness month, Tilton Fitness will be hosting several fundraising initiatives to benefit the Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Assistance Fund in Margate, New Jersey. “Shirley Mae is an organization that benefits patients locally in Southeastern New Jersey who have been diagnosed with breast cancer,” says General Manager Jennifer Stubley. “It is run entirely by a volunteer advisory committee and 100% of all donations and money raised assist women and men of all ages who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.”

To kick off the month, Tilton Fitness Galloway will host their 2nd Annual Breast Strokes for Breast Cancer event. “During Breast Strokes for Breast Cancer, members and non-members alike are invited to make a donation to swim laps in our pool all month long,” says Aquatics Director Linda Jamison, a 13 year Breast Cancer Survivor. The highlight of the event occurs on Saturday, October 19th when participants can partake in a Marathon Swim Day from 11am – 3pm. The individual that swims the most laps will receive a Tilton Fitness Gift Basket. “Last year we raised over $2,000 for the Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Assistance Fund and we hope to top that contribution this year,” says Linda. The aquatics center at Tilton Fitness Galloway is open Monday-Friday 6 am – 10 pm and Saturday and Sunday 7 am – 10pm. A certified lifeguard is present at all times.

Just down the street, Tilton Fitness Northfield will host several donation-based Breast Cancer Spin Rides throughout the month. “On Monday, October 7th; Tuesday, October 15th; and Wednesday, October 23rd members are encouraged to wear pink during class as they show their support for those currently fighting the disease,” says Group Fitness Director Ruthie O’Brien. “One of our main goals here at Tilton Fitness is to help educate the community about the importance of health and wellness and, what better way to do that than through raising awareness for breast cancer, a disease that has touched the lives of so many of us.”

“In Mays Landing, the Tilton Fitness team will be hosting Pink Saturday on October, 19th in which members are encouraged to wear pink as they participate in a day of themed classes,” says General Manager Leanne Ternosky. Group Fitness instructors will be offering Pink Spinning at 7:30am with Dottie, Crazy in Pink INSANITY® at 8 am with Lisa, Punch in Pink TURBO KICK® at 8:30am with Wendy, BODYPUMP™ in Pink 9:30am with Lisa as well as Mind, Body & Pink Yoga at 10:30am with Valerie. Donations by class participants will be accepted throughout the day.

“Breast cancer is second, only to lung cancer, in cancer deaths among women in the United States. However, with early detection and advancement in treatment, breast cancer survivors are the most prevalent of cancer survivors,” says Jenn. “Therefore, Tilton Fitness is proud to be a part of the fight against breast cancer here in South Jersey and we are encouraging our team members to take action as well.”

At Tilton Fitness, community education and involvement is a fundamental organizational component which is why 100% of all fundraising contributions made throughout the month of October will go directly to the Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Assistance Fund in Margate. Jenn reminds us that, “By raising awareness, the Tilton Fitness family hopes to help facilitate a strong fight and recovery for our friends, family and neighbors in need.”

From Brett Balsley to BCA: Growing an Insurance Legacy By: Felicia Lowenstein Niven The year was 1954, and G. David—nobody called him George—proudly opened the doors to his family business. The firm, G. David Balsley Real Estate and Insurance, focused on selling residential real estate. Insurance was just a sideline.

It was still a side business when an eager 21-year old Brett D. Balsley joined the ranks of the company, known then as Balsley Losco Real Estate and Insurance, in 1991. Asked by his father Don Balsley whether he wanted to work on the real estate or insurance side, Brett chose the latter, he admits, because it seemed like banker’s hours.

“It also sounded more interesting,” he said. “Of course, I was dead wrong about the hours, but I was right about the job. I’ve had the opportunity to learn so much about so many different industries.”

These days, Brett is at the helm of the company, recently renamed BCA Insurance Group. And he’s brought in a heavy hitter—Lawrence D. Cohen as partner—whom he first met when he entered the industry.

“You can imagine how tough it was to be 21 and working on straight commission, hardly making any money at all,” said Brett. “You start second guessing yourself. A cousin of mine referred me to Larry Cohen. I remember going into Philly to meet with him in his large, impressive office. We talked for an hour and then he took me to a wonderful restaurant on Chestnut Street.”

The meeting was a pivotal point in the careers of both Brett and Larry, but they wouldn’t know it for another two decades. The lunch, however, reenergized Brett for the insurance industry.

But just six years later, things turned around for Brett, and not in a positive way. Tragically, his father passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. To add another level to Brett’s grief, he was forced out of the company business—the place he had been groomed to take over—due to an antiquated succession plan. But his dad’s former partner Carlo Losco knew how much the business meant to Brett and how hard he had worked to grow the insurance side. In 1998, Carlo agreed to carve out the insurance business and form a separate company with Brett, and with a quick acquisition of another local insurance agency, they formed Balsley Losco Greenberg Insurance Group. They had an eight-year agreement with Brett’s right for a buyout. Brett became an the sole owner in 2007 and changed the name of the agency to the Brett Balsley Insurance Group in 2010.

56 | The Boardwalk Journal | October 2013 In the meantime, Larry Cohen was building his resume at mostly large insurance brokerage houses. He worked for 10 years for Aon Insurance Company, which included a two-year stint in Italy and some extensive travel in Europe. He also worked for the NIA Group, and eventually briefly for the Marsh & McLennan Agency, LLC. Marsh & McLennan took over NIA, and promptly let go the senior management team, including Larry. The word on the street quickly spread to the Brett Balsley Insurance Group.

“My agency was growing,” said Brett. “Sometimes you need some help. I knew Larry came from the large ‘alphabet houses’ of insurance. He’s got a great large firm perspective.”

They reconnected in several meetings, where it was clear that Larry and Brett were on the same page. Larry joined the group in 2012.

Then hit. The whole office switched to crisis mode. “I remember we were there the day after Sandy, with no electric, no phone service,” said Brett. “There were no computers, so we went and pulled the old paper files. And we started calling our clients on our cell phones to ask how they were, did they need to file a claim. They were amazed that we reached out to them before they called us.” The staff was there 12 to 15 hours a day, including weekends, to get through the Sandy claims. Brett and Larry were answering phones as well as filling out paperwork for the first month following the super storm. If they didn’t know each other well before that time, they did now. And both men liked what they saw.

“Brett’s very solid technically,” said Larry. “He knows what he’s doing. He’s also got a great personality and terrific relationships with his clients. But most importantly for me, he has integrity. To me, integrity is everything.”

The move to change the company name and solidify the partnership was a natural one. The announcement, which came on August 7, 2013, made it official. Brett Balsley Insurance Group is now BCA Insurance Group. Brett is president and Larry is executive vice president and partner. “There’s a different perception when you walk in the door as BCA as opposed to Brett Balsley,” noted Brett. “Brett Balsley is a hometown broker. We want to be perceived as a regional broker. Our largest account is a 450 million revenue company with offices throughout the world, including Spain, Germany, Latin America, and China. We handle employee benefits, payroll services, everything they need in terms of risk management.”

“But we’re not leaving behind our small clients,” he said. “We’re still keeping up that great customer service. I’ve had loyal clients for 23 years, and they still pick up the phone to talk to me. I will always return calls. Larry and I are both accessible. We’re still the hometown agency, just with the ability to handle a large-scale focus. And we’re continuing to work to enhance our products and services for our customers.”

Toward that end, the BCA Insurance Group has opened a second office in Mt. Laurel, to be closer to a growing group up clients in the region. Brett and Larry are looking to grow the company pretty aggressively.

As for Larry, a Margate native, he’s excited to be back in town. “I have done a lot of things in the insurance industry. I’ve grown companies for other people but not for myself. I’ve never been a significant owner of a big firm—until now. This is an incredible partnership that will only benefit our clients.”

The BCA Insurance Group will maintain its corporate offices at 330 Tilton Road, Northfield NJ.

Are you in the mood for a nice, relaxing, gourmet meal? Well too bad, and right on the money. So I am saying it now, “Go to the Anchorage, because it’s football season and there are only two things you should the wings are great!” The food there has always been solid and the be concerned with: wings and beer!
