This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

Brown: Where exactly is Olive, California? Holman: Strange you should ask [laughs]. Now it‟s a part of Orange, California. You may not know where Orange is either. Orange is near Santa Ana, which is the county seat of Orange County, California. I don‟t know if Olive was a part of Orange at the time, or whether Orange has just grown up around it, or what. But it‟s located in the city of Orange, although I think it‟s a separate municipality. Anyway, it was a really small town. I always say there was a couple of orange-packing houses and a railroad spur. Probably more than that, but not a whole lot.

    BARBARA MINKUS - BIOGRAPHY Barbara Minkus began show business in Julius Monk's New York review Bits and Pieces. She then went on to receive rave reviews touring as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl throughout the United States. She was the original Lucy in the recording and Off-Broadway production of You're A Good Man Charlie Brown, and continued her Broadway success in The Education of Hyman Kaplan, directed by the great George Abbott. On television, she was a regular for six seasons of Love American Style and played Gittle the Witch in ABC's Curiosity Shop. She made many appearances on The Tonight Show and a record twenty times on The Merv Griffin Show. Barbara has numerous film and voice over credits, including playing the voice of Ms Pacman in the ABC cartoon series Pac Man. After taking time out to raise her family, Barbara returned to the theater at the Santa Monica Playhouse in Funny You Don't Look Like a Grandmother, and went on to star there as Molly Picon in Picon Pie, a role she helped research. She then reprised Molly Picon Off-Broadway. Barbara Minkus starred in Los Angeles and Florida as Jennie Grossinger in Stephen Cole's delightful musical Saturday Night at Grossinger's. Barbara presented From This Moment On – Minkus Sings Porter at The American Jewish University in Los Angeles and returned to AJU to present The Songs Of Irving Berlin. She played Miss Lynch in Grease at the Muni Theatre in St. Louis, and came back to The Muni and Starlight Theater in Kansas City, to play Yente in Fiddler on the Roof.

Those without a URL came from a cassette tape, LP or CD in my personal collection, or from now-defunct YouTube or Grooveshark web pages. I had many of the other recordings in my collection already, but searched for online sources to allow the reader to hear what I heard when writing the book. Naturally, these posted “videos” will disappear over time, although most of them then re- appear six months or a year later with a new URL. If you can’t find an alternate location, send me an e-mail and let me know. In the meantime, I have provided low-level mp3 files of the tracks that are not available or that I have modified in pitch or speed in private listening vaults where they can be heard. Any video footage known to survive is prefaced with three asterisks: ***. Video footage that was recorded but appears to now be lost is prefaced with three asterisks in parentheses: (***). On numerous occasions at Slugs’ Saloon in Manhattan, recording devices were set up on the stage and recorded Morgan’s performances without objection from the trumpeter. So far, none of these recordings have come to light. The information herein is a collation of data from newspapers, periodicals, published and personal interviews, discographies, programs, pamphlets, and other chronologies of other artists. Morgan’s performances were rarely advertised in most mainstream papers, so I drew valuable information primarily from African-American newspapers and jazz periodicals, which regularly carried ads for nightclubs and concerts. Entertainment and nightlife columnists in the black press, such as “Woody” McBride, Masco Young, Roland Marsh, Jesse Walker, Art Peters, and Del Shields, provided critical information, often verifying the personnel of an engagement or whether an advertised appearance occurred or was cancelled. Newspapers that I used include the Baltimore Afro-American (BAA), Cleveland Call & Post (C&P), Chicago Defender (CD), New Jersey Afro-American (NJAA), New York Amsterdam News (NYAN), Philadelphia Tribune (PT), and Pittsburgh Courier (PC).
