Included in the first donation were summit registers and committee records of historical value. Registers continue to be added to the collection by club members and other individuals as they are filled and replaced. Accruals Future additions are expected. Processing Information Processed by Lauren Lassleben, Project Archivist, and Xiuzhi Zhou, Project Assistant in 1992; Additions by Charis Baz Takaro in 1998, and by Alison E. Bridger from 2004-2007. Additions are processed by Bancroft Library staff as they are accessioned. Organizational History The Mountaineering Committee was formed in 1932 with Francis P. Farquhar as its chairman. Initially it planned to compile and index a list of early ascents and summit records of the Sierra Nevada. Later the Committee was also engaged in documenting mountain register records and adding historical notations to climbing routes. For more information on missing registers see: Kirby, Mark. "Paper Chase: Who's Stealing the Sierra's Historic Summit Registers?" National Geographic Adventure Magazine Feb. 2005. Scope and Content of Collection The Sierra Club Mountain Registers and Records contains the Sierra Club Mountaineering Committee records, artifacts including register containers, and mountain registers mainly from California summits of the Sierra Nevada. This collection contains three series: Mountaineering Committee Records, Artifacts, and Mountain Registers, covering a period of over one century. The committee records reflect the scope of its activity, the policy it set for record keeping, and vivid descriptions of the summits, the trails, and ascents to the peaks. The second series contains a variety of artifacts, principally a sampling of register containers and related items retained for exhibit purposes. The third series contains mountain registers, mainly from California summits of the Sierra Nevada, with a few from other states and foreign countries. Many registers have weathered snow and rain and are extremely fragile.
