This was conducted in April, 2001, and I found him to be quite friendly and detailed in our discussion. Next time you watch the last two films, take time to appreciate the qualities of color and visual detail present. Let’s start off with the basics, Chris. What is your background, pre-Phantasms? Phantasm III was my first real feature film as first unit cinematographer. Before that I had shot some second unit photography as well as many short films as a film student and even two features, one as a film student and one just after graduating from school, but P3 was my first film with a budget over a million dollars. Before going to film school, I had worked as a freelance still photographer; as well as a gaffer and grip on a number of films, tv movies, commercials, etc….so I had a strong photographic background. The Gathering by Ana Reisens Adult Category, First Place In the movie we sleep fearlessly on open planes because we cannot imagine any danger more tragic than those that have already passed. For weeks we have been arriving over the earth’s broken skin, over mountains and rivers, shaking the aching flagpoles from our shoulders. Now all the priests and imams and rabbis and shamans are gathered beside the others, teachers, brothers and kings and they’re sharing recipes and cooking sweet stories over fires. Suddenly we hear a voice calling from the sky or within – or is it a radio? – and it sings of quilts and white lilies as if wool and petals were engines. It’s a lullaby, a prayer we all understand, familiar like the scent of a lover’s skin. And as we listen we remember our grandmothers’ hands, the knitted strength of staying, how silence rises like warmth from a woven blanket. And slowly the lines begin to disappear from our skin and our memories spin until we’ve forgotten the I of our own histories and everyone is holy, everyone is laughing, weeping, singing, It’s over, come over, come in. And this is it, the story, an allegory, our movie – the ending and a beginning. The producer doesn’t want to take the risk. No one will watch it, he says, but we say, Just wait. All the while a familiar song plays on the radio and somewhere in a desert far away a soldier in a tank stops as if he’s forgotten the way. -

It focuses on tasks that students were assigned using discussion forums on the Internet. It begins by describing the Web site, which is <http://www.esljapan.com>, looking at software considerations, privacy issues, operating system compatibility, and the forum. It goes on to examine teaching methods (types of classes and method applied); procedures and problems; teaching points (headline reading, subject line reading, and peer writing); and the Intensive English Programme, which involved diary writing. Using Communicative English Language Test data as a measure of student ability, the study examined whether it was possible to predict that students with greater ability would post more frequently or post more lines to the Web site than students with lower ability. Results found no relationship between test scores and frequency of student postings. The paper recommends considering other factors that might be indicative of student motivation (e.g., their grades being based on how often they posted). Obwohl ein Grossteil der Sprachwissenschaftler sich darüber einig ist, dass die aktuellen Entwicklungen in einer Sprache am klarsten im Wortschatz reflektiert werden, lassen die lexikographischen und morphologischen Zugänge zur Beobachtung des lexikalischen Wandels wichtige Fragen offen. So beschäftigen sich letztere typischer- weise mit Veränderungen, die schon stattgefunden haben, statt sich dem sich zum aktuellen Zeitpunkt vollziehenden Wandel zu widmen. Die vorliegende Dissertation bietet eine innovative Lösung zur Un- tersuchung des sich vollziehenden lexikalischen Wandels sowohl in Bezug auf die Datenquelle als auch bzgl. der verwendeten Methodologie. In den vergangenen 20 Jahren hat das Internet unsere Art zu leben, zu arbeiten und zu kommunizieren drastisch beeinflusst. Das Internet bietet aber auch eine Masse an frei zugänglichen Sprachdaten und damit neue Möglichkeiten für die Sprachforschung. Die in dieser Arbeit verwendeten Daten stammen aus einem Korpus englischsprachiger Blogs, eine Art Computer gestützte Kommunikation (computer-mediated communication, CMC). Blogs bieten eine neue, beispiel- lose Möglichkeit, Wörtern nachzuspüren zum Zeitpunkt, in der sie Eingang in die Sprache finden. Um die Untersuchung des Korpus zu vereinfachen, wurde eine Software mit dem Namen Indiana entwickelt. Dieses Instrument verbindet den Korpus basierten Zugang mit einer lexikographischen Analyse. Indiana verwendet eine Kombination von HTML-to-text converter, eine kumulative Datenbank und verschiede Filter, um potentielle Neologismen im Korpus identifizieren zu können. -
