Using Songs in the Language Classroom

Available online at www.sciencedirect.com Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences 70 ( 2013 ) 1136 – 1143 Akdeniz Language Studies Conference 2012 Using songs in the language classroom Carol Griffiths* Yeditepe University, Istanbul, Turkey AIS St Helens, Auckland, New Zealand Abstract There are some who believe that literature is a neglected resource in the language classroom, and, of the literary genres, probably the one that is given the least attention is poetry. But songs are only poems set to music. They have universal appeal, and the rhythm, rhyme and other poetic devices help to make them memorable. Furthermore, songs can be found which appeal to all ages and levels. This session will illustrate the potential of songs by presenting one for quite young learners and one for more mature students. Suggestions will be made for using the songs to develop skills and language awareness. © 20122012 The Published Authors. by Published Elsevier by Ltd. Elsevier Selection Ltd. and/or peer-review under responsibility of ALSC 2012 Selection and peer-review under responsibility of ALSC 2012 Keywords: songs; literature; poetry 1. Introduction Poetry is one of the three major literary genres along with drama and prose, and songs are poems set to music. In recent years, literature has tended to be neglected in the language classroom. As McKay (1986, p.191) comments, since the emphasis has been on (1993), nevertheless, believes that there has been a resurgence of interest in teaching language by means of literature, which is viewed by some as an underutilized resource. There is, however, much controversy about a definition of literature.

    Simon and Garfunkel Performance

Sounds of Simon and Garfunkel Friday, Nov. 13 10:30am A tribute to this great duo, starring artists AJ Swearingen & Jonathan Beedle Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel began their careers singing folk songs from “The Great Traditional Songbook” in the 50s but they didn’t stop there. Throughout the 60’s they developed their folk rock style and topped the billboard charts with many traditional songs and original songs written by Paul including "The Sound of Silence" (1964/1965), "Mrs. Robinson" (1968), "Bridge over Troubled Water" (1969), and "The Boxer" (1969 ). They created the hit song and the original score for the soundtrack of “The Graduate,” a critically acclaimed 1967 Mike Nichols movie, which truly propelled them to stardom. REPERTOIRE The hits of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, the most success- ful folk rock duo Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon of the 1960’s. They won 10 Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Although the duo officially broke up in 1971 they have had a num- ber of reunion tours and performances, the last of which happened in 2010. Paul Simon continues to perform and write in a highly successful solo career. AJ Swearingen & Jonathan Beedle Close your eyes and you have the closest you can get to a real Simon and Garfunkel performance. Vocalists AJ Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle have been performing this heartfelt tribute for over 10 years delivering not only the great music and feeling of this duo, but also telling the Simon and Garfunkel story. A genuine and honest musical treatment of the Simon & Garfunkel songbook is accompanied by full symphony or- chestra.

The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd The Rev. Morgan S. Allen December 4, 2016 II Advent, Matthew 3:1-12 Merciful God, who sent your messengers, the prophets, to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation; give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer. Amen. Good morning. For us Allens, I am not sure there is a fall day we enjoy more than the Settlement Home Garage Sale’s Preview Party. Having been nurtured as a capitalist behind a card table on Saturday mornings in the carports of my childhood, the Palmer Events Center filled with others’ lives’ leftovers feels like a homecoming, and, now that our children, Michael and Ginna, accompany my wife, Missy, and me to the event, we all have our favorite spots to hit: I head first to the stereo section for assessment of the turntable and amplifier stocks, before taking up residence for an hour or more among the records. Whether vinyl or plastic, the albums used to be $1 each, but inflation and nostalgia have hit the Sale, such that now a fella pays $1.50 for the media of his choice. Given the good cause and the selection, I’ve decided to okay the increase. When my grandfather, Sir, would take me to the Monroe Public Library’s second-hand book sales, he passed onto his first grandson two consumer wisdoms: one: “Morgan, it’s not a good deal if you don’t need it;” and, two: “If you buy it used, can you sell it the next day for what you paid?” Even as careful as I am, my patronage of the Settlement Home tests both standards, as I customarily walk away with 40 or 60 CDs and as many as a couple dozen long- player records that at least one person has already decided aren’t worth keeping.

    Simon & Garfunkel
