Duda Jr1,3 Abstract Background: Venomous organisms serve as wonderful systems to study the evolution and expression of genes that are directly associated with prey capture. To evaluate the relationship between venom gene expression and prey utilization, we examined these features among individuals of different ages of the venomous, worm-eating marine snail Conus ebraeus. We determined expression levels of six genes that encode venom components, used a DNA-based approach to evaluate the identity of prey items, and compared patterns of venom gene expression and dietary specialization. Results: C. ebraeus exhibits two major shifts in diet with age—an initial transition from a relatively broad dietary breadth to a narrower one and then a return to a broader diet. Venom gene expression patterns also change with growth. All six venom genes are up-regulated in small individuals, down-regulated in medium-sized individuals, and then either up-regulated or continued to be down-regulated in members of the largest size class. Venom gene expression is not significantly different among individuals consuming different types of prey, but instead is coupled and slightly delayed with shifts in prey diversity. Conclusion: These results imply that changes in gene expression contribute to intraspecific variation of venom composition and that gene expression patterns respond to changes in the diversity of food resources during different growth stages. Seventy-four species of mollusks belonging to three classes and 40 families were found: 63 gastropods, 9 bivalves and 2 chitons, during this study in 1995. Of these, 16 species were found only as empty shells (11) or inhabited by hermit crabs (5). Forty-eight species were found at only one locality. Half the species were found at one site, Puerto Escondido. The most diverse habitat was the low rocky intertidal zone. Nodilittorina modesta was present in 34 transects and Nerita scabricosta in 30. Nodilittorina aspera had the highest density of mollusks in the transects. Only four transects did not clustered into the four main groups. The species composition of one cluster of transects is associated with a boulder substrate, while another cluster of transects associates with site.

Among them are two new species: Eunice marcusi and Palola brasiliensis. The coast line is dominated by calcareous bottoms and its fauna is one of the poorest known in the western Atlantic. The eastern Brazilian coast polychaete fauna is among the least known in the western Atlantic. The coast (ca 13°00'–22°30'S) is dominated by biogenic calcareous bottoms of living and dead algae, coral reefs and other biodetritic fragments (Lana, 1996). This sub- strate is suitable for reef-boring organisms, such as Eunicidae which is the dominant polychaete family in the area. Despite their large body size and the large number of char- acters, eunicid taxonomy is quite problematic. Several original descriptions were rather brief, leading to a great number of indeterminable species. Fauchald (1992a,b) reviewed the genera Eunice and Palola and redescribed them in a more realistic framework that allowed for the identification of many rare species previously reported as synonyms of ‘well known’ species. Hence, in this study, of the total of 17 species recorded, two are new: Eunice marcusi and Palola brasiliensis, and many are known only from original description or very few samples. The estuaries host 30 species and the coastal lagoons only two. In the shallow subtidal there were 18 gastropod species and 40 bivalve species representing 36.3% of all. This study adds 24 bivalve species and 29 gastropod species not recorded in previous studies for a total count of 213 species (102 bivalves and 111 gastropods) for Gulf of Tehuantepec.

The position of the sun relative to the Java trench in southern Indian Ocean at 10°S to 11°S, and that of the moon relative to the southern beach of Kuta, Lombok (8.9°S, 116.28°E) at the dates of nyalé swarming were determined. The results showed that (i) annual swarming and spawning of nyalé in Lombok occurred during the last quarter of lunar phase, i.e. on the lunar date of 19th or 20th, of the tenth month in local Sasak calendar which corresponds to either February or March, (ii) there were three possible positions of the sun at the date of nyalé swarming, namely at south, above, or north of the Java trench. Nyalé swarming would occur along with heavy rain when the sun was at the north of the trench on 20th of lunar date in a particular year, and (iii) the moon was precisely at the south of Lombok on the date of nyalé swarming in February, and the event was postponed to March on the similar lunar date if the moon was not at that particular site.

Kohnb a Naos Marine Laboratory, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Apartado 2072, Balboa, Ancon, Panama b Department of Biology, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195, USA Received 21 April 2004; revised 27 September 2004 Available online 19 November 2004 Abstract Phylogenetic and paleontological analyses are combined to reveal patterns of species origination and divergence and to deWne the signiWcance of potential and actual barriers to dispersal in Conus, a species-rich genus of predatory gastropods distributed through- out the world’s tropical oceans. Species-level phylogenetic hypotheses are based on nucleotide sequences from the nuclear calmodu- lin and mitochondrial 16S rRNA genes of 138 Conus species from the Indo-PaciWc, eastern PaciWc, and Atlantic Ocean regions. Results indicate that extant species descend from two major lineages that diverged at least 33 mya. Their geographic distributions suggest that one clade originated in the Indo-PaciWc and the other in the eastern PaciWc + western Atlantic. Impediments to dispersal between the western Atlantic and Indian Oceans and the central and eastern PaciWc Ocean may have promoted this early separation of Indo-PaciWc and eastern PaciWc + western Atlantic lineages of Conus. However, because both clades contain both Indo-PaciWc and eastern PaciWc + western Atlantic species, migrations must have occurred between these regions; at least four migration events took place between regions at diVerent times. In at least three cases, incursions between regions appear to have crossed the East PaciWc Barrier.
