FROM THE DESK OF THE CHAIRMAN BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND OFFICERS FOUNDATION COMMITTEES

In 1998, the daughters of Martha Mason Hill decided to honor their mother by establishing a Dr. James Stith, Chairman Hospitality: foundation that provides educational scholarships and other forms of support for the children Board Members Sarah Cheatham of lower Chesterfield County, the community in which she had lived and worked much of Alberta Stith, President Delores Gilliam her life. Working as a maid in the women’s dormitories at Virginia State College, Mrs. Hill Shirley Baugh, /Corresponding Secretary/Treasurer Sonya Felicia Mason had fulfilled her dream of seeing each of her seven daughters attend college (all went to Sarah Cheatham, Assistant Secretary Garrett Mason Marilyn Ibin West Dr. Willie Lewis, Acting Assistant Treasurer Virginia State) and had behind the scenes, supported countless other students. In this issue, I reflect on some of Foundation’s activities. Barbara Crews Outreach: Several years ago, the Foundation funded an endowed scholarship at Virginia State Gwendolyn Davis Annie D. Henderson, Chair Barbara Crews, Assistant Chair University (VSU) that targeted URM students in Southern Chesterfield County. In 2016, the Delores Gilliam Sarah Cheatham earnings from that endowment had grown sufficiently that a $1000 scholarship was awarded by VSU. We look Annie Henderson Dr. Willie Lewis, Jr. Gloria Harris forward to growing that endowment such that the size and/or the number of scholarships can be increased. George Henderson Garrett Mason For several years, MMHMF has awarded up to two $1000 scholarships each year. Our near-term goal is to increase Judy Stephenson Dr. Willie Lewis, Jr. the size of the awards. With support from the Ettrick Neighborhood and Business Foundation, MMHMF will Trudy Stephenson Sonya Felicia Mason Patricia Woodfolk continue to facilitate Matoaca Middle School field trips to Virginia State University and other institutions, setting the early expectation that college attendance can be a possible part of each student’s future. Annually, school supplies are FOUNDATION COMMMITTEES: Publicity/Media: collected and provided for students at Ettrick Elementary and Harrowgate Elementary Schools and the before and Annual Awards Program: Shirley Baugh after school program at the Children’s Home of Virginia Baptists. Hundreds of books were secured and delivered to Trudy Stephenson, Co-Chairperson Annie Henderson Ettrick Elementary students as take - home gifts to provide for summer readings. Additionally, the Foundation Judy Stephenson, Co-Chairperson Doretha Gilliam Houston Dr. Willie Lewis, Jr. purchased and delivered a printer plus accessories to the Special Education class at Ettrick Elementary. The Arnold Baugh Sonya Felicia Mason Kindergarten program at Harrowgate Elementary School received the food items requested for a classroom project Arlene Moore Martha Denise Stevens Alberta Stith and for snacks for students who did not have them. Marilyn Ibin West Finance: We also provided an ice cream party in support of the reading competition at Harrowgate for the class reading the Shirley Baugh Scholarship Committee: most books. Additionally, the Foundation donated funds to purchase books for the school-wide reading project at Dr. Willie Lewis Jan Hatchette, Co-Chair Dr. Adrienne Stith Butler, Co-Chair Matoaca middle school and sponsored the senior awards breakfast at Matoaca high school. Garrett Mason Dr. Woodrow Knight We hope that our namesake would be proud of the associations the Foundation has established with schools in the Floyd Robinson, Jr. Alberta Stith ADVISOR: Dr. Andrea L. Stith community. Clearly, this would not have been possible without your help. I believe Mrs. Hill would encourage us to continue contributing to the academic foundation of our youth but would caution us not to forget the moral-ethical component of their education. 10 MMHMF Fall 2017 - 11 - family news cont’d from page 9 MEMORIAL TRIBUTE TO MMHMF MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Hilda Euletta Hatchette FAMILY MEMBERS OF OLIVIA MASON JOSEPH GRADUATE - Submitted in loving memory by her daughters, Joy and Jan In the Spring of 2016, her son, Louis, Jr., graduated from the University of Arizona College of Education at the University of Arizona. Five In our lifetime, we are fortunate to have people in our lives that impact us, develop us into who we are, days later, her grandson, Louis Joseph, III, graduated from Walden and encourage us to be the best that we can be. Hilda was the fifth of seven daughters born on September 28, 1937, to the late Martha Mason Hill and Thomas Emmanuel Hill. She was a native of Chesterfield County, Virginia, where she graduated from Carver High School and attended Virginia State College. She accepted Christ and joined Union Grove Baptist Church at an early age. Hilda was one of the founders of the Martha Mason Hill Memorial Foundation that was established in 1998 to assist students in 2017 SAMUEL A. GILLIAM MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT Chesterfield County by providing academic scholarships to underrepresented, minority high school students. She was the assistant treasurer of the Board of Directors, a member of the Executive Committee, and the Hospitality Committee. Hilda supported and believed in the goals of the foundation and was constantly looking for ways to do more and have a greater impact. Like her mother, Lake Chesdin Golf Course in Chesterfield on Saturday, September 9th Hilda firmly believed that education opened doors and allowed students to achieve their dreams.

It was a perfect day for a tournament! The weather was great, as was the food and fellowship. Family was always the center of Hilda's life. She loved the holidays and other special occasions when the family was able to get Thanks to all who participated!
