INTRODUCTION The Mayfield Papers, containing approximately six cubic feet, span the years 1895 to 1929. The collection consists of both business and personal letters of the Mayfield family, although the bulk of the material is centered on the family's law office. The Maxwell law firm was founded by Pearson Brummett Mayfield (1832-1904) Mayfield maintained an extensive general practice as well as serving as legal counsel for the Ducktown Copper Company and the East Tennessee, Virginia, and Georgia Railroad. After the addition of two of his sons, the name of the firm was changed to Mayfield and Mayfield. Among the firm's prominent clients were the East Tennessee Power Company, the Southern Railway, and the Ducktown Copper Company. The collection's subject matter included the building of Parksville Dam, Polk County's "Smoke Suits", debt collections, title searches, personal injury cases, and estate settlements. Also included is the correspondence of Samuel J. Aiken, who practiced with the Mayfields until his death in 1901. The collection is arranged in chronological order and then in alphabetical order within each folder. The container list contains an index of the principals mentioned in the law firm's correspondence. It contains a brief description of the subject and a file folder reference to the original documents. This collection is a microfilm only collection and is the property of the Cleveland Public Library, Cleveland, Tennessee. Although single copies may be made for the purposes of scholarly research, the user is responsible for any copyright infringements. Mayfield Papers (1895-1929) Quantity and type of material The Mayfield Papers contain the correspondence of the Cleveland, Tennessee law firm of Mayfield and Mayfield. It includes the firm's incoming and outgoing correspondence, as well as personal notes and letters. Much of the correspondence is handwritten, but there are also many pieces that were typed on a machine the firm's secretary most certainly struggled with daily. The firm's prominent clients included the East Tennessee Power Company, the Southern Railway Company, and the Ducktown Copper Company. Subject matter includes the building of Parksville Dam, Polk County's "Smoke Suits", debt collections, title searches, personal injuries, estate settlements, and affairs of the heart. This collection also contains the correspondence (1891-1894) of Samuel J. Aiken who practiced law with the Mayfields until his death in 1901. Notable are the many examples of the elaborate letterheads used by businesses during this time period. Included with the correspondence are miscellaneous papers such as receipts, invoices and Western Union telegrams. This collection is stored in 13-letter size Hollinger files. The index is an alphabetic listing of the principals mentioned in the correspondence. Current and past ownership The Mayfield Papers were donated to the Cleveland Public Library, Cleveland, Tenn. in 1989 by Maryl Mayfield Elliott, great granddaughter of the firm's founder. It is part of the Manuscript Collection of the Cleveland Public Library-History Branch 833 N. Ocoee St., Cleveland, TN 37311 Historical back~round/origin Pearson Brummett Mayfield (1832-1904) received his early education in Polk County schools, and graduated from Hiwassee College in 1856. He studied law under Judge George Washington Rowles, who was one of the first attorneys admitted to the Bradley County bar. Mayfield established his law practice in 1859 at Benton, Tennessee. In that same year, he was elected to the State Legislature and represented Polk, Meigs, and McMinn Counties until 1862. In 1867 Mayfield relocated to Cleveland, Tenn. and joined John B. Hoyle in the practice of law. They remained partners until 1870 when Hoyle was elected Bradley County's Circuit Court Judge. Mayfield maintained an extensive general practice as well as serving as legal counsel for the Ducktown Copper Co. and the East Tennessee Virginia and Georgia Railroad. In 1886, his eldest son James Elliot Mayfield (1865-1923) joined the firm, and the name was changed to Mayfield and Son. Mayfield's second son, Pearson Blythe Mayfield (1877-1936) joned the firm and it became known as Mayfield and Sons. In 1903 Charles Stanwix Mayfield (1881- 1946) was admitted to the bar and joined his brothers practicing under the name of Mayfield and Mayfield.
