This project began as a semester paper in Georgetown University Professor Susan Pinkard’s Food in Western History seminar in the Fall of 2011. I presented “The Culinary Interests of Thomas Jefferson: Francophilic or Cosmopolitan” at the Phi Alpha Theta Biennial Convention in January 2012 and the Phi Alpha Theta Mid-Atlantic region conference the following March. The discussion inspired at these panels made me realize that my research was not even close to being finished. To satisfy my own curiosity, I would need to revisit my own argument and claims in the interest of scholarship and good historiography. The Senior Honors Thesis program has given me this opportunity. My work has fallen into the midst of an ongoing conversation about food and the Founding Fathers, demonstrating that despite the scholarship of generations of historians, the topic is still relevant. For the most part, however, this examination tends to fall more into the realm of popular history. Myths surrounding the Founding Fathers proliferate and become more firmly entrenched in the minds of Americans as decades pass. Jefferson is no exception, and as interest in Jefferson’s culinary curiosity increases, so to do the fables concerning his garden and kitchen. Jefferson probably did not introduce ice cream to the United States, though he did bring back a recipe from France. Similarly, Thomas Jefferson did not make macaroni and cheese popular in America just because he served it at the President’s House. 2 Jefferson’s interests in cuisine and entertaining deserve a place in scholarly academic conversation. Researchers and historians at Monticello and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation have worked tirelessly over the last few decades to restore and preserve Jefferson’s legacy. To them, and especially to Peter Hatch, Director of Garden and Grounds at Monticello, historians of Jefferson owe a great debt. Works such as Hatch’s “A Rich Spot of Earth”: Thomas Jefferson’s Revolutionary Garden at Monticello and John Hailman’s Thomas Jefferson on Wine contribute invaluable research to the field, though the works generally highlight only one of Thomas Jefferson’s specific interests. With this approach, however, historians have missed a distinct opportunity to study the confluence of Jefferson’s many interests – gardening, farming, architecture, design, the intellectual pursuit of knowledge, philosophy, Virginia and international cuisine, wine, dining atmosphere, service, presentation, and conversation – in the setting in which they coalesced – his “Table.” Jefferson’s Table is not simply the most prominent piece of furniture in his dining room. I coin the term, hereafter capitalized, to explain Thomas Jefferson’s philosophy that inspired an experience of dining in a space dedicated to an artful display of excellent food and wine enjoyed by a group of equals engaged in enlightened conversation. His Table developed over the course of his lifetime and changed as circumstances allowed or dictated. Though the aspects of the Table evolved with experience and exposure as time passed, entertaining and cultivating his interests remained anchoring activities in Jefferson’s life, providing distraction and escape from the world around him. No matter his age, Jefferson enjoyed his Table, deriving greater delight from sharing this experience with others, and his infectious enthusiasm is passed to those to undertake a study of it. 3 In writing, I chose not to include a full biography of Thomas Jefferson. Shelves in libraries groan under the weight of those volumes already undertaken by historians for almost two centuries. I suggest Jon Meacham’s new Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power, Joseph Ellis’ American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson, or Dumas Malone’s four-volume classic, Jefferson and His Time, for further reading. Acknowledgements Like the mountain of debts that Thomas Jefferson incurred throughout his life, I, too, am deeply indebted to a great number of people whom I will never be able to repay for their patience, their kindness, and their support. First, I would like to thank the AP United States History teacher to whom this thesis is dedicated. Mr. Gary Okey taught me to love history, but he taught me much more than that. More importantly, he taught me to teach myself and how to write, and I came to Georgetown prepared for college because he, and many other teachers at Carondelet High School, demanded nothing less than my best. For that, I will be forever grateful. Every professor who has taught me here at Georgetown has contributed to the success of this project in some way. There are some, however, that I must name specifically for their constant help, advice, and support in the last four years. Professor Susan Pinkard agreed to advise me on this project, but her lecture on foodways in Europe in the fall of 2009 inspired my interest in culinary history and convinced me to be a history major on the spot. Professor Alison Games showed her support for this project in more ways than I can count, sharing not only her expertise in early American history, but giving advice on running and even cheering me on at Mile 7 as I ran the Marine Corps Marathon. 4 Someone once described Professor Chandra Manning as the calm, reassuring “voice of reason.” I have found this description perfectly accurate day in and day out over the last two semesters, but especially in those moments when all thesis writers need a bit of reassurance. She went above and beyond to advise her students, commenting on each person’s work with the utmost care and attention. Her contribution this year, along with Professors Spendelow and Astarita’s years of dedication to the Honors Thesis Program, make the program the enriching experience that it is. The greatest debt I will never be able to repay is to my parents. I would like to thank them for their unending love and support and for the greatest gift they have given me, my education. For my final note of gratitude, I can only quote the genius of historian Peter Gay when he wrote, “Life is a shipwreck, but we must not forget to sing in the lifeboats[.]”2 On some days, this thesis project was smooth sailing, but most of the time it was an absolute shipwreck. I need to thank all of my fellow thesis writers who sang with me in the lifeboats as we rowed our way through this last year. As the shadows lengthen, more than a dozen figures emerge from a Palladian villa of brick set atop a little mountain. Leaving the dining room where they had long lingered, talking of Paris, travels, wine, and philosophy, they walk towards the South Terrace. Children run ahead of the mingling adults, always returning to one standing out among the group. The tall elderly man, over six feet in height with broad shoulders and a bony frame, walks with a stick. As the group nears the kitchen garden, a patch of earth nearly one thousand feet long, and strolls a dirt path called Mulberry Lane, the old man points to his favorite plants with his cane, explaining their origins, when they were sown, and

Fearful that the attack on the Capital could eventually spell defeat and worried for their city, these refugees took shelter in the homes and fields of Brookeville, Maryland, a small, Quaker mill town on the outskirts of Washington. These pacifist esidentsr of Brookeville hosted what could have been thousands of Washingtonians in the days following the attack, ensuring the safety of not only the people of Washington, but of President Madison himself. As hosts to the President, the home of a prominent couple stood in for the President’s House, and as the effective center of command for the government, the town was crowned Capital of the United States for a day.

Though much has been made of the influences of geography and political philosophy on his accomplishments, little has been done in addressing the role played by his own health and various illnesses of the era. Disease and personal health issues were perhaps the greatest natural allies, catalysts, and limiting agents of Henry Clay’s accomplishments. Ill health helped to start his career under the tutelage of George Wythe, the deaths of his daughters while undertaking the seasonal journey from Kentucky to Congress pushed his ideas on internal improvements, and disease collided with several of his campaigns for the presidency. This article focuses on the personal letters of Henry Clay and those around him to discern their views on the various illnesses of his day and gauge their impact on his career. Keywords: United States, Henry Clay, public health Henry Clay once claimed that he would, “rather be right than be president,” a desire that would, perhaps unfortunately, come true for the indefatigable politician. Perhaps because of this he has largely been forgotten by the American public. Despite this, his nearly fifty years of public service spanned the most important events in the history of the early Republic, including the Louisiana Purchase, the War of 1812, the U.S.-Mexican War, and the various compromises that helped to slow the descent of the nation towards civil war.

Merkel∗ ABSTRACT Despite his severe racism and inextricable personal commit- ments to slavery, Thomas Jefferson made profoundly significant con- tributions to the rise of anti-slavery constitutionalism. This Article examines the narrowly defeated anti-slavery plank in the Territorial Governance Act drafted by Jefferson and ratified by Congress in 1784. The provision would have prohibited slavery in all new states carved out of the western territories ceded to the national government estab- lished under the Articles of Confederation. The Act set out the prin- ciple that new states would be admitted to the Union on equal terms with existing members, and provided the blueprint for the Republi- can Guarantee Clause and prohibitions against titles of nobility in the United States Constitution of 1788. The defeated anti-slavery plank inspired the anti-slavery proviso successfully passed into law with the Northwest Ordinance of 1787.     d ADAMS AND JEFFERSON: Personal Politics in the Early Republic John Connor The deterioration of the friendship between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson remains a controversial subject among his­ torians. The two men were once the best of friends, spending personal time with each other’s family, and enjoying a profes­ sional collaboration that would become famous—drafting the Declaration of Independence. Furthermore, they freely ac­ knowledged their mutual fondness. In 1784, Adams wrote that his colleague Thomas Jefferson was “an old friend with whom I have often had occasion to labor at many a knotty problem and in whose ability and steadiness I always found great cause to confide.”1 Jefferson wrote similar words of praise to his friend James Madison: “[Adams] is profound in his views, and accurate in his judgments. He is so amiable, that I pronounce you will love him if ever you become acquainted with him.”2 But despite this initial close friendship, by the 1790s Adams called Jefferson “weak, confused, uninformed, and ignorant.”3 At the same time, Jefferson called Adams actions as President “the most grotesque scene in the tragic­comedy of govern­ ment.”4 What led these two men who once worked so closely together to turn from close friends to bitter enemies in only ten years? How their friendship dissolved has been discussed by Stephen Kurtz, Stanley Elkins, and Eric McKitrick, who em­ 58 phasize certain events in the Adams Presidency as precise mo­ ments in which the two men parted ways.5 Noble Cunningham Jr., points to the passage of the Alien and Sedition Act and the creation of a Standing Army as the point at which the two men’s differences became irreconcilable.6 Recent scholarship by James Sharp argues that a dinner conversation held before Adams was even elected led to their disbanding.7 A second school of thought, led by Merrill Peterson, Dumas Malone, and John Ferling, links the divide not so much to a particular event but to the actions of a third party, often Alexander Hamilton.

Using eighty-one semi-randomly and diversely selected founders as case subjects to examine and trace how individual, group, and collective founder interest evolved over time, this thesis uniquely analyzes 20th and 21st Century Revolutionary American scholarship on the founders by dividing it five distinct periods, with the most recent period coinciding with “founders chic.” Using data analysis and topic modeling, this thesis engages three primary historiographic questions: What founders are most prevalent in Revolutionary scholarship? Are social, cultural, and “from below” histories increasing? And if said histories are increasing, are the “New Founders,” individuals only recently considered vital to the era, posited by these histories outnumbering the Top Seven Founders (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Paine) in founder scholarship? The thesis concludes that the Top Seven Founders have always dominated founder dissertation scholarship, that social, cultural, and “from below” histories are increasing, and that social categorical and “New Founder” histories are steadily increasing as Top Seven Founder studies are slowly decreasing, trends that may shift the Revolutionary America field away from the Top Seven Founders in future years, but is not yet significantly doing so.

To comprehend the nature and existence of Annette Gordon-Reed’s much- heralded, exquisitely crafted, triumphant history of Sally Hemings and her family, it helps to look back a decade, to a set of developments in public his- tory and scholarship that Gordon-Reed herself helped initiate. In Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy (1997), Gordon-Reed carefully evaluated the evidence for Jefferson’s paternity of some or all of Hemings’s children, beginning with that testimony first put into print publicly by James Thomas Callendar in 1802 and later confirmed in published interviews by Hemings’s descendants. She admitted the hearsay nature of the positive evidence and made her best case by undermining the other side’s arguments, showing that it amounted to far less than “proof” of Jefferson’s nonpaternity. The testimonies relied upon by Virginius Dabney, John C. Miller, Merrill Peterson, Douglass Adair, et al. derived from Jefferson’s family and partisan supporters. Indeed, nineteenth-century defenders of Jefferson had more reasons to dissemble or even destroy evidence, but their words had been taken at face value well into the twentieth century.
