  • How Baseball's Arm Whisperer Fixes Broken Pitchers
How Baseball’s Arm Whisperer Fixes Broken Pitchers Ivan Nova’s unexpected resurgence marks yet another successful reclamation project for the Pittsburgh Pirates under the tutelage of pitching coach Ray Searage. By: Jared Diamond- The Wall Street Journal Pittsburgh In today’s data-driven, power-centric version of baseball, starting pitchers tend to follow a similar formula: They throw as hard as they can for as long as they can, racking up strikeouts until they reach the 100-pitch mark, usually around the sixth inning or so. The days of one man owning the mound for 27 outs ended long ago. But it seems Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Ivan Nova never received that message. Upon arriving here in a trade with the New York Yankees last August, he has emerged as the ultimate throwback, dominating opposing lineups in a manner hardly seen for decades. In his first 15 outings for Pittsburgh, Nova completed four, more than anyone else during that span. Even more improbable, in 91 2/3 innings of work, he has issued just four total walks. That means when Nova pitches, he is equally likely to go the distance as he is to miss the strike zone four times to a given batter. “A lot of guys like to strike out everybody,” said Nova, who is scheduled to start Saturday night in Miami. “I like seeing all those ground balls and quick outs. It makes me more happy than getting 10 strikeouts.” Nova’s unexpected resurgence marks yet another successful reclamation project for the Pirates, who, under the tutelage of pitching coach Ray Searage, have reached the playoffs in three of the past four years.

APPROACHING SIGNING DAY THE COLLEGE CHOICE PROCESS OF HEAVILY RECRUITED STUDENT ATHLETES by SOLOMON YOUNG HUGHES (Under the Direction of James C. Hearn) ABSTRACT This dissertation examined the factors that heavily recruited high school football players took into consideration when selecting a higher education institution to attend. The model of college choice introduced by Don Hossler and Karen Gallagher (1987), proposes that students’ progress through three phases when deciding where they will attend college: predisposition, search, and choice. This study is a result of a survey conducted during the search phase of high school seniors whose success as football players afforded them the opportunity to be recruited by some of the wealthiest and most successful college football programs in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). • Twar: Introducing a Method to Actually Calculate Wins Above Replacement
tWAR: introducing a method to actually calculate wins above replacement Daniel J. Eck March 21, 2019 1 Introduction Wins above replacement (WAR) is meant to be a one-number summary of the total contribution made by a player for his team in any particular season. As stated by Steve Slowinski of Fangraphs, WAR offers an estimate to answer the question, \If this player got injured and their team had to replace them with a freely available player of lower quality from their bench, how much value would the team be losing," where this value is expressed in number of wins [Slowinski, 2010]. That being said, nobody actually calculates WAR in a manner that properly answers the above question as posed. This is not by any explicit fault of the metric and those who calculate it. One problem is that it is impossible to simultaneously quantify the value of a player when the player is available and the value of a replacement to that player when the player is unavailable. The player in question is either available to play or unavailable to play, never both. Instead of confronting the problems raised in this factual-counterfactual world, people have attempted to calculate a hypothetical replacement player to implicitly compare every player with using the machinery of a proprietary black box [Baumer et al., 2015]. Three widely used versions of WAR that are calculated in this manner are Baseball Reference's bWAR [Reference, 2010], Fangraphs's fWAR [Slowinski, 2010], and Baseball Prospectus's bWARP [Prospectus, 2019]. Through the incorporation of ideas from causal inference, we propose methodolody to directly estimate wins above replacement.
