If you want to know about crime in your neighborhood—or where a crime might take place next—you could talk to your local beat cop or consult the police blotter. Or you could ask Luis Larco (Electrical and Computer Engineering ’15).

While an Illinois Tech student, Luis, from Miami, Florida, worked with Professor Miles Wernick on a crime prediction project for the Chicago Police Department. The project involved developing tools that the CPD could use to develop a nuanced understanding of categories of crime—including social networking analysis, data mining, statistical machine learning, pattern classification, and computer-aided diagnosis.
