Some were outraged, others merely amused. At that time only a few of the critics were aware of the importance of the event. Haas Diebenkorn saw this portrait and many more paintings by Matisse at Sarah Stein’s Palo Alto home in 1943. Stein, a native San Franciscan, had moved to Paris with her husband, Michael, and their young son in 1904. They began to acquire Matisse’s work the following year and quickly became his most passionate early supporters, as well as close personal friends. When they returned from France to the Bay Area in 1935—the year this museum was founded—they brought their substantial collection of modern art with them. In part, the palettes he explored in works such as Urbana #4 may have been reactions against the gray light of his new home. But they were also clearly inspired by his growing experience of Matisse’s paintings and his developing sense of how to apply what he saw in them to his own canvases. Art 150: Introduction to the Visual Arts David McCarthy Rhodes College, Spring 2003 414 Clough, Ext. 3663 417 Clough, MWF 11:30-12:30 Office Hours: MWF 2:00- 4:00, and by appointment. COURSE OBJECTIVES AND DESCRIPTION The objectives of the course are as follows: (1) to provide students with a comprehensive, theoretical introduction to the visual arts; (2) to develop skills of visual analysis; (3) to examine various media used by artists; (4) to introduce students to methods of interpretation; and (5) to develop skills in writing about art. Throughout the course we will keep in mind the following two statements: Pierre Auguste Renoir’s reminder that, “to practice an art, you must begin with the ABCs of that art;” and E.H. Gombrich’s insight that, “the form of representation cannot be divorced from its purpose and the requirements of the society in which the given language gains currency.” Among the themes and issues we will examine are the following: balance, shape and form, space, color, conventions, signs and symbols, representation, reception, and interpretation. To do this we will look at many different types of art produced in several historical epochs and conceived in a variety of media. Whenever possible we will examine original art objects. Art 150 is a foundation course that serves as an introduction for further work in studio art and art history. A three-hour course, Art 150 satisfies the fine arts requirement. Enrollment is limited to first- and second-year students who are not expected to have had any previous experience with either studio or art history.

  • Impressionism Post-Impressionism and Fauvism
    • This lecture provides a quick introduction to Impressionism, the Post- Impressionists, particularly Paul Cézanne, Divisionism/Pointillism, the Fauves and Matisse • The lecture ends with the exhibition held by Roger Fry in 1910 called Manet and the Post-Impressionists. This is regarded as a turning point and the time when developments that had taken place in France over the previous 20 years were seen in England. Although made fun of by the critics it changed the way many artists worked. Notes • The following are not covered as they were covered in the course last year. • Introduce the influence on England Whistler, English Impressionists • New English Art Club • Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) is the only artist to have shown his work at all eight Paris Impressionist exhibitions, from 1874 to 1886. • Fauvism Was the First Twentieth Century Movement in Modern Art
QUICK VIEW: Synopsis Fauvism was the first twentieth century movement in modern art. Inspired by the examples of van Gogh, Gauguin, and Neo-Impressionists such as Seurat and Signac, it grew out of a loosely allied group of French painters with shared interests. Henri Matisse was eventually recognized as the leader of Les Fauves, or The Wild Beasts as they were called in French, and like the group, he emphasized the use of intense color as a vehicle for describing light and space, but also for communicating emotion. The style proved to be an important precursor to Expressionism, and an inspiration for other, painterly modes of abstraction. Key Points • Fauvism never developed into a coherent movement in the manner of Impressionism or Surrealism, but instead grew from the work of several acquaintances who shared common enthusiasms. Many, such as Matisse, Marquet, and Rouault, had been pupils of the Symbolist Gustave Moreau, and admired his stress on personal expression. • The Fauves generally rejected the fantastic imagery of the Post-Impressionists, and returned to the more traditional subjects once favored by the Impressionists, such as landscapes, cityscapes, and scenes of bourgeois leisure. • Rather than extend the quasi-scientific investigations of artists such as Seurat and Signac, Fauves such as Matisse and Derain were inspired by them to employ pattern and contrasting colors for the purposes of expression. • The Fauves became renowned for using pure and unmixed colors which they intensified further by applying thick daubs and smears. • Although the Fauves were not well-versed in academic color theory, they sought out © The Art Story Foundation – All rights Reserved For more movements, artists and ideas on Modern Art visit www.TheArtStory.org unique and unnatural color combinations in their paintings with the purpose of evoking a variety of emotional responses; in that sense, color was used arbitrarily and was subject to the painter's own emotional response to the canvas.
