Ecology out of Bounds: Environmental Humanities Scholarship for Multi-Species and Transdisciplinary Contexts ECOLOGY OUT OF BOUNDS: ENVIRONMENTAL HUMANITIES SCHOLARSHIP FOR MULTI-SPECIES AND TRANSDISCIPLINARY CONTEXTS Justin Derry A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HUMANITIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO Defense Date: January 27, 2017 © Justin Derry, 2017 Abstract This dissertation argues that the critical, political and ethical resources shaping popular and scholarly forms of Anglo-North American environmentalism lack the theoretical and imaginative tools to address the challenges of the Anthropocene (that is, the notion that the human species, enabled by a globally expansive petro- industrial apparatus, has become a dominant geological force). Unsettling notions of progress, agency, nature and the individual in novel ways, the Anthropocene changes the way humanists understand what it means to be human and what environmentalists have understood nature to be. As a result, I argue that the anthropogenic landscapes of the Anthropocene challenge writers, theorists, storytellers, artists, scientists and activists to open different kinds of intellectual and imaginative space. Therefore, drawing on feminist science and technology studies, multi-species anthropology and posthumanism, this dissertation contributes to the emerging field of the Environmental Humanities by conteXtualizing forms of environmental mediation responsive to Anthropocene environments. Making a mess of strict disciplinary and species divisions, my work addresses the way that different kinds of knowledge practice show up in and make a difference in the way bodies and multi-species assemblages materialize and function. Moreover, I distinguish my contribution to environmental thought by avoiding knowledge practices predicated on ‘into the wild’ narratives and ‘return to nature’ tropes. Problematically, these kinds of narratives are at risk of advocating masculine imaginaries of control and conquest, and moral superiority compleXes about self- sufficiency that delimit boundaries between the natural and the unnatural, the pure from artificial, and thus close off knowledge making work from play, eXperimentation, wonder and curiosity. More than a question of accurately representing what the Anthropocene is or is not, my research amounts to a pragmatic challenge about how to craft theoretical and textual practices that foster non-anthropocentric, multi-species and transdisciplinary media, publics and futures. ii Acknowledgements The help and support I have received while putting this project together have been immense and humbling. (Haraway “‘SF’: Science Fiction, Speculative Fabulation, String Figures, So Far”) The nonhuman environment first materialized for me as a wild, free space situated outside the suburban neighbourhoods of my youth, and early on became a place of wonder, interest and curiosity. Conflating rugged notions of the wild outdoors with freedom and individuality (both human and nonhuman), the notion that ‘real’ nature was ‘out-there’, past the artificial confines of my suburban neighbourhoods, provided a conceptual infrastructure and moral universe that rendered nonhuman environments as authentic, pure places increasingly steamrolled by a corrupt capitalist modernity. This early consciousness of the nonhuman environment was shaped by the politics of environmentalism as acid rain, ozone holes, and genetically modified crops came to populate the Canadian cultural media-scape of the 1990’s. The cultures, politics, aesthetics and embodiments specific to a form of environmentalism that opposed the subjugation and appropriation of organic, green space offered a space for my adolescent idealism to inhabit. From there, I moved into the archives, conceptual machinery and discursive apparatuses conteXtualizing the Environmental Studies program at the University of Waterloo (UW). Emphasizing social science methods and quantitative models of 1 analysis that focused on translating environmental problems into policy frameworks, this disciplinary space gave substance to a discursive, affective and political space mapped around questions of sustainable land-use, ecological foot- prints and rationally determined limits to growth. Although I became increasingly detached from the environmental idealism contained in the ‘tree-hugging’ environmental discourses and imaginaries of my adolescence, I found the discursive and theoretical infrastructures rendering the disciplinary spaces of UW’s Environmental Studies program too rational, quantitative and logically clean. In the end, I found neither of these forms of environmental mediation to be a good fit, as neither were built methodologically and conceptually to articulate the kinds of transdisciplinary, critically informed multi-species imaginaries, discourses, aesthetics and embodiments that I later found in the Environmental Humanities. Recognizing implicitly that stories make worlds and worlds make stories, as I later read in Haraway, I was content with neither the knowledge making nor the world making literacies, narratives, and apparatuses contained within the idealist environmental mediums of my youth or the liberal, policy driven mediums taught at the University of Waterloo.     Dr. Robin Kimmerer Biography Dr. Kimmerer is a mother, plant ecologist, writer and SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York. She serves as the founding Director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment whose mission is to create programs which draw on the wisdom of both indigenous and scientific knowledge for our shared goals of sustainability. Her research interests include the role of traditional ecological knowledge in ecological restoration and the ecology of mosses. In collaboration with tribal partners, she and her students have an active research program in the ecology and restoration of plants of cultural significance to Native people. She is active in efforts to broaden access to environmental science education for Native students, and to create new models for integration of indigenous philosophy and scientific tools on behalf of land and culture. She is engaged in programs which introduce the benefits of traditional ecological knowledge to the scientific community, in a way that respects and protects indigenous knowledge. Dr. Kimmerer has taught courses in botany, ecology, ethnobotany, indigenous environmental issues as well as a seminar in application of traditional ecological knowledge to conservation. She is the co-founder and past president of the Traditional Ecological Knowledge section of the Ecological Society of America.     (Com)Post-Capitalism Cultivating a More-than-Human Economy in the Appalachian Anthropocene BRADLEY M. JONES Department of Anthropology, Washington University in St. Louis, USA Abstract This article explores the cultivation of life in ruins. At the foothills of Appalachia, I focus on a permaculture farmer—Sally of Clearwater Creek—fostering arts of (making a) living on a damaged planet. Ethnography in the Anthropocene requires tending and attending to those making the best of the mess that’s been made: a commitment to noticing things not (only) falling apart, but (also) coming back together again. In other words, an attention to compost—the (de)compositional processes and collaborative assemblages nourishing all life on earth. Building on “more-than-human” and “human economy” theorizing in the environ- mental humanities and economic anthropology respectively, this article develops the concept of the “more-than-human economy” to better understand the “problem of living despite eco- nomic and ecological ruination” (Tsing 2015). At Clearwater Creek a multi-species ecological ethic recursively informs an economic paradigm for making ends meet with others, where surpluses born of synergies feed back into a resilient system, revaluing weeds and waste. Sally’s labors reflect a new form of ethical, ecological, and economic entanglement that crops up in the interstitial spaces and disturbed landscapes of the Anthropocene. Permaculture praxis—an embodied relationship with more-than-human others and an attention to symbi- otic communities of co-flourishing—contributes to the cultivation of “arts of attentiveness” (van Dooren et al. 2016) necessary for living (well) on a damaged planet. Shteyngart, McCarthy and the Fall of the Animal Kingdom Kate Marx (The University of Exeter) Wild nonhuman animals are rapidly disappearing from the earth, while animals bred for human consumption are increasingly brought inside and confined to warehouses in a move towards more ‘efficient’ farming techniques. We are thus moving into a time marked by an absence of animals: a post- animal era. Gary Shteyngart’s Super Sad True Love Story (2010) and Cormac McCarthy’s The Road (2006) stand out amongst a wave of dystopian and apocalyptic fiction, very different novels yet both depicting a near-future in which humans live their lives almost entirely without the presence of other animals. The novels’ protagonists suffer deep psychological trauma from trying to survive in the post- animal world that they have inherited. Shteyngart’s characters self-obsess and find shiny things to distract themselves with, but compulsively refer to each other by the names of other animals. McCarthy’s man and his son, walking through a post-apocalyptic wasteland, both fixate on signs of life and lifelike processes. Although animals are almost entirely absent from both novels, each features a single, pivotal encounter with another creature. The suffering of each novel’s characters reminds us of what is at stake if we continue down the path that we are on, one of mass extinctions for wild animals and mass incarcerations for domesticated animals. We, too, are animals, and the fall of the animal kingdom would be the fall of all of us.

    The Human Animal: An Ecocritical View of Animal Imagery in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World Author: Erik Fredriksson Supervisor: Cecilia Björkén Nyberg Spring term 2013 English 91-120 Halmstad University i Abstract The early twentieth century saw the beginning of modern environmentalism. Intellectuals dreamed up solutions to the world’s problems and hoped for a better future being made possible by advances in science and technology. However, Aldous Huxley produced Brave New World which, as this essay argues, mocks the enthusiasm of his intellectual peers. The dystopian novel depicts a future in which technology dehumanizes the population, and uses a great deal of animal imagery to make this point. This essay analyses the use of animal imagery from an ecocritical perspective arguing that the “pathetic fallacy” is reversed. By examining the use of biotechnology and central planning in the novel, and applying the ecocritical perspective that humanity and nature are part of a whole, this essay argues that society resembles a farm for human animals, which is partly expressed by Huxley’s use of the image of a bee colony. The argument is presented that Huxley satirizes his environmentally concerned peers by depicting a totalitarian state which, though unconcerned with environmental issues, echoes the eco-fascist methods proposed by the author’s friends and family.     MAPPING ENVIRONMENTAL HUMANITIES EDUCATION IN THE NORDIC COUNTRIES Bringing Research in Green Humanities into Teaching (BRIGHT) network A network of 1 2 Why this report? The Environmental Humanities, an interdisciplinary field of scholarly inquiry which examines the junction of humans and nature through humanistic research approaches, has emerged as a major element in environmental-themed research in the Nordic Countries. Environmental Humanities (EnvHum) encompasses work done in environmental history, ecocriticism, environmental literature studies, posthuman studies, animal studies, environmental philosophy, and more. These are joined together in their common quest to understand the relationship between humans and the non-human world and the shaping of that relationship by culture, action, and thought. Our age is facing imminent environmental threats, including global climate change, escalating biodiversity loss, rapid natural resource extraction, and unjust distribution of environmental damage and pollution. EnvHum asks how we understand what it means to be human in these challenging times as well as how humanities can contribute to our understanding of the challenges. The Bringing Research in Green Humanities into Teaching (BRIGHT) network was established to build capacity in EnvHum humanities in the Nordic and Baltic countries by collaboratively exploring methods of integrating Environmental Humanities research into first (Bachelors) and second (Masters) level university teaching and building new cooperative regional teaching programs in environmental. BRIGHT was founded in 2018 as a Nordplus-funded network coordinated by Professor Dolly Jørgensen, University of Stavanger. Because environmental issues are a priority contemporary concern, we need green humanities research to be coupled to teaching. The network will create synergies and connections between the dispersed environmental humanities groups across the region and strengthen the integration of environmental humanities research into Nordic education.
