Supt Dean Smith – acknowledgement to country.

Commander’s Welcome: Supt Smith welcomed all attendees and invited individuals to introduce themselves to those present. A general overview of the current command was presented emphasising our proactivity and achievements over the past three months and our challenges into the future.

Supt Smith raised the current restructure and the changes to the naming conventions. Regional areas are now considered Police Districts with the concept of the Officer In Charge Model. Inspectors attached to Lake Illawarra Police District will each hold a geographical responsibility. The attachments will identify the area and the Inspector responsible. This will assist members who have concerns that are relevant to their areas and an email address is provided for contact.

The current method of meeting First Response and deployment of vehicles remains the same. The geographical responsibility allows a representative of the Police to ensure their area is monitored and issues addressed as they arise.

Minutes of previous meeting accepted by S/C Ben Walsh and D/C/I Broadhead

Nil actions from previous meeting.

Crime Review & Analysis/ Summary – S/Sgt M Brophey • Overview presentation on crime within the Lake Illawarra Police District. • The sexual assault figures currently remain over target. Historical sexual assaults that are reported affect these figures as they are recorded at the time of reporting, not when the incident occurred. • DV numbers for Lake Illawarra are high and in the top 10 for the state. Legal action rates are high and DV evidence kits are in the top 3 in the state. DV high risk targeting AVO’s using varying initiatives - AVO Compliance checks, check defendant and the victim, risk assessment of vulnerable victims, victim protection. Safety Action Meetings are held fortnightly with representatives from Govt and Non Govt agencies to address cases. We have approximately 350 DV matters a month and have checks and balances in place. • The spate of robberies earlier in the year has been reigned in with the arrest of a number of offenders. Our Legal Action rate is high in commercial premises. • SFMV is currently closer to target and has dropped off dramatically with a number of offenders in custody. Unlocked cars appear to continue to be the biggest contributing factor for the increase. • Increase in Pay Wave, Credit Card and Fail to Pay fraud. • Discussions at Community Events in relation to crime prevention are ongoing and officers continue to encourage a level of personal responsibility to secure their property. • Business Planning forum recently held by the District and the focus is on Prevention, Disruption and Response. As we move into the future of policing emerging crime relates to Technology Enabled Crime and Vulnerable Communities

Community Engagement Summary – S/C Walsh and S/C Keating – presentation of past and future events. • Coffee with a COP is ongoing and has been well attended and now including the Neighbourhood Centres to ensure engagement from all the community. • Monthly Pop up Meetings are held in conjunction with Shellharbour Council. • Graffoff Group – PCYC • Tamper Resistant Screw Fitting • Koori Kids & Cops Fishing Day • Kids Fest Emergency Services • Cancer Councils Biggest Morning Tea • PCYC Winners of Anti Bullying Competition – Shellharbour Public School • An information session was held for local Business Owners which included the Robbery Unit and Safer by Design. The idea was to encourage owners to take responsibility for their business operations and employees. A further forum is proposed later in the year and the program will be advertised with plenty of notice. • It is very clear that Community Engagement is fundamental to our business, • Supt Smith conveyed his praise for the Crime Prevention Team and their commitment to the Unit.

Community Feedback/Questions:

• Gary McKay Kiama BCC - enquired to the sponsorship for Breakfast with the Boys and Girls in Blue. • Mr McKay also raised the issue of abandoned vehicles. If a vehicle has been unregistered for 14 days Council is responsible for moving the vehicle. Contact Council and report the vehicle. • Dennis Couley Dapto BCC - praised the actions of the Police and their prompt attendance at jobs and he feels they go above and beyond to serve the community. • Ian Fitzgibbon Dapto BCC – the Dapto Square has been revamped with the forming of the Dapto Futures Group and Wollongong Council initiative. There will be a shaded seating and a playground area, and hopefully this will reduce the poor behaviour of persons in the area. Coffee with a COP will be welcome as a Coffee Van will be on site. • Caitlin Roodenys rep for Paul Scully raised the issue of trucks using and speeding down Wentworth Street in Port Kembla. THPC to be advised. • Stephen Jones MP – The high DV numbers in the area is a concern and it is clear the Police have strategies in place but if any assistance can be provided at a Federal level please contact his office.

In closing Supt Smith advised the meeting of the Southern Region High Risk Domestic Violence Team commencing in September. This unit will be housed at Lake Illawarra providing an additional 7 officers and 1 intelligence officer to work in reducing the level of notifications along the eastern seaboard.
