Angela Patten

It is always disarming to see a bird in flight. The great blue heron, perched on one leg like a battered armature, takes off crying out his cawchee in disgust.

We look up from our fiberglas canoe to see him suddenly become sprung rhythm, great wings beating the wind in a slow disdainful dance.

Friday, June 25, 2021 at 7:00 PM FREE INTRODUCTION TO GONG BATH RELAXATION with Kim Muncil Kundalini yoga classes to be announced for July and August.

INSTRUCTOR: KIM MUNCIL Friday, June 25th, 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm LOCATION: Island Arts Center

Gong Bath Relaxation The sound and vibrational energy of gongs is an ancient and powerful tool that’s been practiced for thousands of years! The gong is used to help still the mind and allow the body to deeply relax. Participating in gong baths consists of lying on a yoga mat or blanket with additional blankets and a pillow if so desired. All the participants have to do is lay there and let the sound waves of the gong wash over them. Gong baths help to reduce stress and produce a better flow for emotions. Some gong tones are known to boost vitality along with enhancing a positive vibe. To prepare for relaxation there is a short time of gentle movement with breathwork. No experience is necessary. You need to bring your own yoga mat and/or blankets. Recommended for teens through adult.

Kundalini Yoga Kundalini Yoga is different than other styles of yoga because it includes breathwork, mantra, and meditation as well as exercises and poses. Together, all these things expand energy in the body. It is an ancient practice that is powerfully uplifting. Each class is different and truly an experience. Gong bath relaxation is also a part of this practice. No experience is needed. You must bring your own yoga mat.

Kim has been teaching yoga in Albany, NY for many years.

Sunday, July 25, 2021 at 2:00 PM OUR STORIES, OURSELVES INSTRUCTOR: Ricki Moss Sunday, July 25th, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM LOCATION: Island Arts Center REGISTRATION: $25

Think of our language as our first art medium. As soon as we open our adorable little mouths, we’re told to use our words, and we do, we use them throughout our lives to communicate what we long for; our troubles, our delights, our ideas, our dreams, our fears, our place in the universe. Inevitably, we’ll question what is real and what is imaginary.

And so we write journals and dream about turning them into stories.

We ask ourselves, do fiction writers draw on actual incidents? Memories? Dreams? Is our journaling limited to the facts of what happened? If we invent a scene, are we liars? Can we trust our memories? Is there a greater truth revealed through our senses?

In short, how do we tap our imaginations by dipping into the endless riches of our senses, to transform bits of our lives into a story that others will want to read.

In this 2 hour session, we’ll prepare pull apart one contemporary short story drawn from daily life to see what we can learn from it. In the second hour, we’ll read a piece of our own writing and then experiment with turning it into a fascinating story.

No pressure, of course; we can learn a lot just hanging in there as a fly on the wall. Ricki is a fiction writer living and working in a renovated railroad depot on Grand Isle with husband and dogs.

Saturday, August 21st at 7:00 PM 8 CUERDAS CONCERT featuring soprano Sarah Cullins and guitarist Daniel Gaviria at the Island Arts Center 1127 U.S. Rt 2, North Hero, VT ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mondays, August 2nd, 9th & 16th - 5:00 PM GROUP SINGING LESSONS AND GROUP GUITAR LESSONS at the Congregational Church South Hero

Vermont soprano Sarah Cullins and Colombian guitarist Daniel Gaviria met in the Andes Mountains of Bogota, Colombia, and have spent the last 8 years bringing Latin American and Spanish song to the Green Mountains as the duo 8 Cuerdas. Sarah and Daniel enjoy combining their classical training and experience with their love of traditional Latin American and Spanish rhythms and folklore, exploring the multiple musical identities of Latin America and the origin of many of its influences, the Iberian Peninsula. Named for the eight strings (cuerdas) that unify this husband and wife musical team, the 8 Cuerdas duo has performed with organizations such as Spruce Peak Performing Arts, St. Paul's Cathedral Arts, Pentangle Arts, Stowe Performing Arts and the Fisk Farm Pro Artist Series. Sarah and Daniel also have prolific careers as solo musicians, appearing with renowned local groups in various genres. www.8Cuerdas.com

8 Cuerdas' Island Arts concert will feature audience favorites from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Brazil, Argentina and Spain, interspersed with poetry and stories about the music. Familiar composers, such as Villa-Lobos, Piazzolla, and Rodrigo, will transport listeners to the gardens of the Alhambra and the steamy streets of Buenos Aires. Other songs will highlight the virtuosity of the Spanish guitar or the operatic soprano. Hear why audiences say: “Sarah’s riveting, interpretive singing and Daniel’s virtuosic guitar playing combined in a compelling way that was emotionally charged and memorable. It was a program of highest caliber performed with conviction and connection to the audience."

Sarah and Daniel will each offer a series of 3 group classes leading up to their 8 Cuerdas performance. Sarah's vocal technique classes will focus on body and breathing coordination, enabling singers of any level to enhance their projection, clarity of tone and efficiency of breath control, while minimizing common tensions. Daniel's guitar technique classes, geared towards guitarists of any style, will be an introduction into fingerstyle with a focus on really getting to know the fretboard and developing a healthy technique. www.SarahCullins.com www.DanielGaviria.net

2020 & 2021 Hello Katya, Priscilla Rose Award to Abby Lee I am so appreciative of receiving the Priscilla Rose scholarship--it allowed me to purchase a much better quality guitar and it has an amazing sound--it has definitely enhanced my lessons and practice times.

I'd also like to thank Island Arts for their support over the past six years with helping my parents to afford guitar lessons for me. I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to learn to play quality classical guitar and I plan to continue it throughout my life. This year is my senior year in high school and I intend to continue taking guitar on through college as well. I think that Island Arts is a great encourager for families who might otherwise have difficulty providing 2019 music lessons for their children, and it helps children Priscilla Rose Award to gain a lifelong love of music. to Jackson Chairvolotti Thank you, Jackson Chairvolotti
