The Interplanetary Surplus Male and Amazon Women of Outer Space (2003).

How Ninja Conquered the World THE TIMELINE OF SHINOBI POP CULTURE’S WORLDWIDE EXPLOSION Version 1.3 ©Keith J. Rainville, 2020 How did insular Japan’s homegrown hooded set go from local legend to the most marketable character archetype in the world by the mid-1980s? VN connects the dots below, but before diving in, please keep a few things in mind: • This timeline is a ‘warts and all’ look at a massive pop-culture phenomenon — meaning there are good movies and bad, legit masters and total frauds, excellence and exploitation. It ALL has to be recognized to get a complete picture of why the craze caught fire and how it engineered its own glass ceiling. Nothing is being ranked, no one is being endorsed, no one is being attacked. • This is NOT TO SCALE, the space between months and years isn’t literal, it’s a more anecdotal portrait of an evolving phenomenon. • It’s USA-centric, as that’s where VN originates and where I lived the craze myself. And what happened here informed the similar eruptions all over Europe, Latin America etc. Also, this isn’t a history of the Japanese booms that predated ours, that’s someone else’s epic to outline. • Much of what you see spotlighted here has been covered in more depth on VintageNinja.net over the past decade, so check it out... • IF I MISSED SOMETHING, TELL ME! I’ll be updating the timeline from time to time, so if you have a gap to fill or correction to offer drop me a line! Pinholes of the 1960s In Japan, from the 1600s to the 1960s, a series of booms and crazes brought the ninja from shadowy history to popular media.

This dissertation argues that a specific group of superhero films that I call the liminal superhero films (LSF) collectively served as the industrial body that organized and created a fully formed superhero genre. The LSF codified the superhero genre, but that was only possible due to several industrial elements at play before they arrived. An increasing industrial appetite for blockbusters coming out of the 1970s, the rise of proprietary intellectual property after the corporate conglomeration that occurred at the end of the 20th century, and finally, the ability of the LSF to mitigate risk (both real and perceived) all led to this cinematic confluence.

  • It Seems Barely an Exaggeration to Say That Arab and Muslim Americans Are Constantly Talked About but Almost Never Heard From. T
It seems barely an exaggeration to say that Arab and Muslim Americans are constantly talked about but almost never heard from. The problem is not that they lack representations but that they have too many. And these are all abstractions. Arabs and Muslims have become a foreign-policy issue, an argument on the domestic agenda, a law-enforcement priority, and a point of well-meaning concern. They appear as shadowy characters on terror television shows, have become objects of sociological inquiry, and get paraded around as puppets for public diplomacy…They are floating everywhere in the virtual landscape of the national imagination, as either villains of Islam or victims of Arab culture. — Moustafa Bayoumi, How Does it Feel to be a Problem1 36 Waleed F. Mahdi investigation of the historical trajectory of Hollywood's engagement with the Arab American cultural identity. INTRODUCTION Popular culture in the United States functions through sensational and rating based entertainment. It also promotes a hegemonic frame of reference for cultural citizenship and national belonging in the life of "cultural citizens.'" It serves as an ideological state apparatus, to echo French philosopher Louis Althusser, guiding citizens through an acculturation process that homogenizes their own subjectivity.' In this sense, this article defines cultural citizenship as a tool to sUbjectify minorities through the mediation of popular culture.4 In his scholarly reviews of Hollywood's history, Lary May emphasizes the cinema's role in enunciating cultural citizenship. Hollywood, he argues, has been a site of fury for debates around "good citizenship" because of its connection to "political power, cultural authority, and the very meaning of national identity."5 For decades, Hollywood has played a major role in Circulating a popular sense of American collective imagination and manufacturing sensational conceptions of cultural Otherness.

  • 1980S Retro Film Culture and the Masculinity of Cult
IT'S ALL COMING BACK TO YOU: 1980s RETRO FILM CULTURE AND THE MASCULINITY OF CULT Ryan Collins Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 2017 APPROVED: Harry Benshoff, Committee Chair Kevin Heffernan, Committee Member James Martin, Committee Member Eugene Martin, Chair of the Department of Media Arts David Holdeman, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Victor Prybutok, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Collins, Ryan. It's All Coming Back to You: 1980s Retro Film Culture and the Masculinity of Cult. Master of Arts (Media Industry and Critical Studies), August 2017, 130 pp., bibliography, 214 titles. The 1980s is a formative decade in American history. America sought to reestablish itself as a global power and to reassert the dominant ideology of white, patriarchal capitalism. Likewise, media producers in the 1980s sought to reassert the dominance of the white, male, muscled body in filmic representations. The identity politics of the 1980s and the depictions of the white, muscled body once prominent in the 1980s have been the site of conservative nostalgia for a young, male-dominated, cult audience that is a subset of a larger cultural trend known as retro film culture. This thesis provides historical context behind the populist 1980s B- action films from Cannon Group, Inc that celebrate violent masculinity in filmic representations with white, male action heroes. Equally important is the revival of VHS collecting and how this 1980s-inspired subculture reinforces white, patriarchal capitalism through the cult films they valorize and their capitalistic trading practices despite their claims of oppositionality against mainstream taste and Hollywood films.
