The aim of my presentation is to make you aware of different possibilities in reusing archival footage in movies. It is my intention to inform you about the importance of the audiovisual archives and how to reuse transmitted programmes or real shots of life in new productions. It is not my intention to evaluate real shots in historical movies and to report about facts and fiction in those films. The subject is dealt with in the book called: PAST IMPERFECT. History According to the Movies. 1995, and my own paper on the same subject: HISTORY AND MOVIES: An evaluation of the information of historical events, of international known personalities and of famous sites and buildings describes in movies. Because I have worked for televison archive for about 29 years I have viewed a lot of television programmes and movies. To commemorate the centenary of the RAF, the Mail salutes Britain’s bravest (and craziest) Spitfire pilot By PAUL BRICKHILL PUBLISHED: 01:01, 31 March 2018 | UPDATED: 01:05, 31 March 2018 Douglas Bader was the living embodiment of the RAF motto, ‘Per ardua ad astra’ (‘Through adversity to the stars’). He lost both his legs in a catastrophic pre-war flying accident and was told he would never walk, or fly, again. Donning artificial legs, he fought to overcome his handicap. Though reluctantly invalided out of the Air Force, he returned to operational duties when war broke out in 1939, as Britain was in desperate need of fighter pilots. Fighter pilot Douglas Bader is photographed at North Weald Airfield getting into a spitfire ready to lead a flight over London commemorating the fifth anniversary of the Battle of Britain. A domineering, dogmatic swashbuckler of a man, he became one of the RAF’s most famous characters — leading his squadrons in the Battle of Britain, devising new tactics that enabled the Luftwaffe to be beaten back, and encouraging the nation with his never-say-die attitude. This was exemplified when, in August 1941, he was shot down over occupied France. He’d been riding his luck for a while, insisting on leading every sortie, driving himself to the limit. 1 His superiors ordered him to go on leave and a hotel was booked in Scotland for him and his wife to play golf. But he insisted on one last flight. -

The Museum of Modern Art % 50th Anniversary to MUSEUM SALUTES JAMES BOND AND HIS CREATORS CRITIC JUDITH CRIST MODERATES FORUM In any time capsule of the 20th century, there is sure to be a commentary on and, more than likely, a print of a James Bond movie. So great is the impact of Secret Agent 007, archetypical hero of the second half of this century, that it is estimated one out of three people throughout the world have at one time or another viewed one of his spy thrillers. The most popular Bond film so far, "The Spy Who Loved Me" reportedly has drawn one and a half billion viewers or over one eighth of the earth's population. Given these facts, the Department of Film of The Museum of Modern Art, considers the phenomenon of James Bond noteworthy and is rendering, at an appropriate time concurrent with the premiere of the new James Bond "Moonraker," an homage to the producer, Albert R. Broccoli and his colleagues. Recognizing that each of the Bond films is a collabora tive project, Larry Kardish, Associate Curator in the Department of Film, has included in this tribute Lewis Gilbert, the director, Ken Adam, production designer, and Maurice B inder, title creator and graphics artist. The James Bond program, organized by Mr. Kardish, opens on June 25, with a documentary titled "The Making Of James Bond." It takes the viewer behind the scenes of the production of "The Spy Who Loved Me." Produced by BBC, it consists of four half-hour films: the first deals 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. -

Abstract The 1960s was a period of change for the British cinema, as it was for so much else. The six feature films directed by John Schlesinger in that decade stand as an exemplar of what those changes were. They also demonstrate a fundamental change in the narrative form used by mainstream cinema. Through a close analysis of these films, A Kind of Loving, Billy Liar, Darling, Far From the Madding Crowd, Midnight Cowboy and Sunday Bloody Sunday, this thesis examines the changes as they took hold in mainstream cinema. In effect, the thesis establishes that the principal mode of narrative moved from one based on objective realism in the tradition of the documentary movement to one which took a subjective mode of narrative wherein the image on the screen, and the sounds attached, were not necessarily a record of the external world. The world of memory, the subjective world of the mind, became an integral part of the narrative. -

COMPLETE FILM NOIR (1940 thru 1965) Page 1 of 18 CONSENSUS FILM NOIR (1940 thru 1959) (1960-1965) dThe idea for a COMPLETE FILM NOIR LIST came to me when I realized that I was “wearing out” a then recently purchased copy of the Film Noir Encyclopedia, 3rd edition. My initial plan was to make just a list of the titles listed in this reference so I could better plan my film noir viewing on AMC (American Movie Classics). Realizing that this plan was going to take some keyboard time, I thought of doing a search on the Internet Movie DataBase (here after referred to as the IMDB). By using the extended search with selected criteria, I could produce a list for importing to a text editor. Since that initial list was compiled almost twenty years ago, I have added additional reference sources, marked titles released on NTSC laserdisc and NTSC Region 1 DVD formats. When a close friend complained about the length of the list as it passed 600 titles, the idea of producing a subset list of CONSENSUS FILM NOIR was born. Several years ago, a DVD producer wrote me as follows: “I'd caution you not to put too much faith in the film noir guides, since it's not as if there's some Film Noir Licensing Board that reviews films and hands out Certificates of Authenticity. The authors of those books are just people, limited by their own knowledge of and access to films for review, so guidebooks on noir are naturally weighted towards the more readily available studio pictures, like Double Indemnity or Kiss Me Deadly or The Big Sleep, since the many low-budget B noirs from indie producers or overseas have mostly fallen into obscurity.” There is truth in what the producer says, but if writers of (film noir) guides haven’t seen the films, what chance does an ordinary enthusiast have. -

JANET GREEN COLLECTION Accession date: March 1984 Extent: 52 Archive boxes INTRODUCTION Documents relating to the work of film, television and stage writer Janet Green (Born Ethel Victoria Green, 4/7/1914, Hitchin, Hertfordshire, died 30/3/1993, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire) Adopted the professional name Janet Green [also wrote as Sarah Mutimer and occasionally as Janet McCormick after her second marriage to theatre manager and writer John McCormick]. Janet Green had short stories published before she was sixteen but became an actress in 1931 (acted with Ralph Lynn in the Aldwych farces and had leading roles in 'Hellowagain' and 'Nap Hand' at the Aldwych and Shaftesbury Theatres) and was involved in theatrical entertainment for the armed forces throughout World War II. In 1945 she gave up acting and began writing for the stage and screen, often in collaboration with her husband John McCormick. During 1956-1959 the couple were under contract to the J. Legends of Screenwriting “Richard Maibaum” By Ray Morton Screenwriters are generally a cerebral lot and not usually thought of as men (or women) of action, but Richard Maibaum certainly was, especially when it comes to writing about the adventures of a certain British secret agent with a triple digit code name and a license to kill. Maibaum was born on May 26, 1909 in New York City. He attended New York University and the University of Iowa and then became an actor on Broadway. In 1930 he began writing plays, including 1932’s The Tree, 1933’s Birthright, 1935’s Sweet Mystery of Life (with Michael Wallach and George Haight) and 1939’s See My Lawyer (with Harry Clark). When MGM bought the rights to Sweet Mystery of Life to use as the basis for its 1936 film Gold Diggers of 1937 (screenplay by Warren Duff), the studio also signed Maibaum, who moved to Hollywood and began writing for the movies. Between 1936 and 1942 he wrote or co-wrote scripts for MGM, Columbia, Twentieth Century- Fox, and Paramount, including We Went to College (1936), The Bad Man of Brimstone (1937), The Lady and the Mob (1939), 20 Mule Team (1940), I Wanted Wings (1941), and Ten Gentlemen from West Point (1942). After the United States entered World War II, Richard spent several years in the Army’s Combat Film Division. Following the war, Maibaum became a writer/producer at Paramount, where he wrote his first spy movie— O.S.S. (1946), which was based on files and research provided by the actual Office of Strategic Services.
