Foxtel’s hit programs sweep the pool at today’s 69th Primetime Emmy Awards

HBO’s smash hit series Big Little Lies, exclusive to Foxtel, was the big winner at today’s 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, dominating its acting categories and securing a total of five awards including Outstanding Limited Series.
This year’s Awards ceremony, hosted by Stephen Colbert and broadcast live on FOX8 from the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, saw Nicole Kidman take home her very first Emmy Award, winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her extraordinary performance as an abused mother in Big Little Lies.
Kidman was joined by her Big Little Lies co-stars Alexander Skarsgard who won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, and Laura Dern for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.
Big Little Lies’ premiere on Foxtel’s showcase channel in February was the largest HBO series launch in subscription television history, with the first episode’s cumulative audience attracting 420,000 viewers across its multiple viewings and recordings for its first week on Foxtel. The entire 7-part series is now available to watch from Foxtel’s on demand library, or streamed on demand on Foxtel Now.
In a further win for HBO, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, star of the hit comedy series Veep exclusive to Foxtel’s showcase channel, now holds the record (alongside acting legend Cloris Leachman), for the most Emmys ever won by an actor. Louis-Dreyfus won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the sixth year in a row for her role in Veep, bringing her tally to eight Emmys. Veep also won Outstanding Comedy Series for the third consecutive year.
HBO’s Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, exclusive to Foxtel’s The Comedy Channel, won Outstanding Variety Talk Series for the second year in a row, as well as Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, while Riz Ahmed from HBO’s critically-acclaimed drama series The Night Of, exclusive to Foxtel’s showcase channel, took home Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.
Foxtel is Australia’s undisputed “Home of HBO” – and HBO again took home the most awards at today’s Emmys, for the 16th year running. Winning a total of 29 Emmys, these Awards are a testament to HBO’s high-quality productions and immense popularity with television viewers.
The Comedy Channel’s Saturday Night Live was also a big winner at this year’s ceremony, taking home a massive nine awards – more than any other show – including Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Kate McKinnon), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Alex Baldwin) and Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series.
