Warner Bros. Studios Burbank Ca | November 13Th at 5Pm WE ALL HAVE A VOICE. CELEBRATE IT. 3rd Annual GALA WARNER BROS. STUDIOS BURBANK CA | NOVEMBER 13TH AT 5PM © 2016 Society of Voice Arts And Sciences™ WE ARE MORE THAN READY...TO CONGRATULATE MICHAEL BUFFER To the Voice Arts® Community: Thank you. Speaking on behalf of my unstoppable partner Joan Baker, and the SOVAS™ Board of Directors, I could go on saying thank you for the rest of my life and I probably will. Gratitude is all I have left after receiving the endless stream of support and love from so many within the voiceover community and beyond. SOVAS™ stands strong for one simple reason: The people who are dedicated to its mission and who commit themselves to it with heart and soul. Judi Durand is a public relations pro who observed what we are envisioning and said, “I believe you have something. I’ll do everything I can to help you reach your goals.” Judi not only made us one of her pro bono projects, but she did it out AND ALL OF TONIGHT’S of love. Artie Egendorf (energysway.com) is another angel in our lives. He has provided extraordinary spiritual guidance and life coaching on levels we could never have imagined HONOREES possible. It always comes down to dedicated people. My heart is filled with gratitude. Operating a nonprofit is a humbling experience. Almost every time you pick up the phone it’s to ask someone for something for free, followed by educating that person in the mission of your organization. With so many charities doing extraordinary work that tackles humanity’s most devastating problems in war-torn nations or regions ravaged by the forces of nature, it seems strange to ask for support for voice acting. Yet, when people consider the global impact that the human voice can have at every level, a flash of recognition suddenly shines through and a sparkle lights their eyes. Voice acting, when done artfully, has the power to engender great joy, laughter, understanding, comfort, knowledge and many other positive influences that impact our global humanity. “In the beginning there was the word.” The word is the realm of the voice actor, the artist, the orator, the singer and anyone who wants to make appositive difference. This year, we are thrilled to see SOVAS™ and the Voice Arts® Awards emerge as a new energy transforming our industry and our world for the better. The Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Honor is a gift to the realm in which our work takes place. The Environmental Voice Arts® Award is a declaration that our voices can be harnessed and unleashed for the greater good. The voice actors, writers, content creators, directors, casting directors and talent agents are the centurions of communication. “In the beginning there was the word.” I take that to mean that every time we speak is a new beginning. • Now We Are All Sons of Bitches
Now We Are All Sons of Bitches MICHAEL BONTATIBUS “Wake up, Mr. Freeman. Wake up and smell the ashes,” the enigmat- ic G-Man murmurs as he leers into the camera, finishing an eerie opening monologue—and so begins Half-Life 2, Valve Corporation’s flagship game. The last time we saw Gordon Freeman, the protagonist, the same rigid and mysterious (though more poorly animated, since the prequel was released six years earlier) G-Man was handing him a job offer after witnessing the former scientist transform into a warrior, bent on escaping from the besieged Black Mesa Research Facility alive. Now, suddenly, Freeman finds himself on a train. No context.1 Is it a prison train? The three other individuals on it wear uniforms like those the inmates wore in Cool Hand Luke. The train soon stops at its destination, and we realize that it is a prison train, in a way—Freeman has arrived at the Orwellian “City 17,” where the ironically named Civil Protection abuses and oppresses, where antagonist Dr. Breen preaches poet- ic propaganda from large monitors hung high above the town. In the years since scientists at the facility accidentally opened a gateway between dimen- sions and allowed a bevy of grotesque creatures to spill into our universe, Earth has been taken over by the Combine, an alien multiplanetary empire. Breen is merely Earth’s administrator—and we realize that the ashes the G- Man spoke of were the ashes of the prelapsarian world. It’s classic dystopia, complete with a Resistance, of which Freeman soon finds himself the “mes- sianic” leader (HL2).

  • Transgender Representation on American Narrative Television from 2004-2014
TRANSJACKING TELEVISION: TRANSGENDER REPRESENTATION ON AMERICAN NARRATIVE TELEVISION FROM 2004-2014 A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Kelly K. Ryan May 2021 Examining Committee Members: Jan Fernback, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Nancy Morris, Media and Communication Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Media and Communication Ron Becker, External Member, Miami University ABSTRACT This study considers the case of representation of transgender people and issues on American fictional television from 2004 to 2014, a period which represents a steady surge in transgender television characters relative to what came before, and prefigures a more recent burgeoning of transgender characters since 2014. The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform. Television representations and the social milieu in which they are situated are considered as parallel, mutually informing discourses, including the ways in which those representations have been engaged discursively through reviews, news coverage and, in some cases, blogs. ii To Desmond, Oonagh and Eamonn For everything. And to my mother, Elaine Keisling, Who would have read the whole thing. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Throughout the research and writing of this dissertation, I have received a great deal of support and assistance, and therefore offer many thanks. To my Dissertation Chair, Jan Fernback, whose feedback on my writing and continued support and encouragement were invaluable to the completion of this project.

  • 2 a Quotation of Normality – the Family Myth 3 'C'mon Mum, Monday
Notes 2 A Quotation of Normality – The Family Myth 1 . A less obvious antecedent that The Simpsons benefitted directly and indirectly from was Hanna-Barbera’s Wait ‘til Your Father Gets Home (NBC 1972–1974). This was an attempt to exploit the ratings successes of Norman Lear’s stable of grittier 1970s’ US sitcoms, but as a stepping stone it is entirely noteworthy through its prioritisation of the suburban narrative over the fantastical (i.e., shows like The Flintstones , The Jetsons et al.). 2 . Nelvana was renowned for producing well-regarded production-line chil- dren’s animation throughout the 1980s. It was extended from the 1960s studio Laff-Arts, and formed in 1971 by Michael Hirsh, Patrick Loubert and Clive Smith. Its success was built on a portfolio of highly commercial TV animated work that did not conform to a ‘house-style’ and allowed for more creative practice in television and feature projects (Mazurkewich, 1999, pp. 104–115). 3 . The NBC US version recast Feeble with the voice of The Simpsons regular Hank Azaria, and the emphasis shifted to an American living in England. The show was pulled off the schedules after only three episodes for failing to connect with audiences (Bermam, 1999, para 3). 4 . Aardman’s Lab Animals (2002), planned originally for ITV, sought to make an ironic juxtaposition between the mistreatment of animals as material for scientific experiment and the direct commentary from the animals them- selves, which defines the show. It was quickly assessed as unsuitable for the family slot that it was intended for (Lane, 2003 p.
