Title: Agatha Christie's Marple 17 Apr Pompous Chief Constable Melchett suspects a connection with Basil Blake, an arty young man who lives locally but Blake is dismissive when Melchett visits him. Then Superintendent Harper rings from the coastal town of Danemouth. Ruby Keane, a young girl employed as a dancer at the Majestic Hotel there, has gone missing, and her cousin Josie Turner identifies the corpse as Ruby's. Ruby is in favour with millionaire Conway Jefferson, whose own son and daughter Miss Marple: The Body in the Library killed Miss Marple: The Body in the Library a wartime air raid, and he wants to adopt her. His son-in-law Mark Gaskell, and daughter-in-law Adelaide react variously to the news. Miss Marple is convinced that the solution to Ruby's murder may be found at the hotel and she and Dolly book into a suite to investigate. There is no shortage of suspects, not Miss Marple: The Body in the Library family members but the handsome Raymond Starr, another of the hotel's Written by don minifie The Bantry's wake up in their home one morning to find the body of a young woman they have never seen before, lying in their library. They duly call the police and the girl is identified as a dancer from the Majestic hotel several towns away and the time of death is established. However, with more of a link to the girl than he realised and no for the time of the murder, Colonel Bantry finds himself a suspect at worst and a point of gossip at best. Mrs Bantry decides to get away for a bit and, hoping to clear her husband's name, asks her friend Miss Marple to accompany her to the seaside and the Majestic Hotel, to carry out their own investigation. Despite not being a fan of the ITV Marple films, I always want to give them the benefit of the doubt because their version could be good, light mystery if it could avoid the problems. It sets itself out with the usual overdone and rather gaudy approach that ITV feel audiences want on a Sunday evening personally I'll stick with 24 on Sky One. This approach could always make for fun but it somehow always fails to do so. What really kills the film though is the cast. Lumley therefore steps up to dominate but I'm not that keen on her and felt she was unconvincing. Fitzgerald is OK but maybe I only thought that Miss Marple: The Body in the Library she plays opposite the charisma-free zone that is Jamie Theakston. Davenport varies between "cheeky cockney" and "Eastenders' gruffness", neither performance is any good though. Overall this is a strange mix of things that doesn't really work. The plot is forced and given no time to breath and fill out. The cast seem to have been told to overact for effect but the delivery of the rest of the film leaves them looking silly; yet again McEwan is weak and most of the others just ham for all they are worth. Mary Mead, Colonel and Mrs. Bantry, owners of the local manor Gossington Hall, are shocked when a young lady's body is found in their library. They call in the police who soon run up against a brick wall; only finding out that the body is that of a dancer Miss Marple: The Body in the Library London who the Bantrys didn't even know. But how and why was her body left in the library? To find out the truth, the Bantrys call in the help of their good friend Miss Jane Marple. A simple plot: a the body of a young woman is found in the library of a manor house in Kent. She can be traced to Miss Marple: The Body in the Library sea-side hotel, and the list of suspects is endless. The police are baffled. So, who do you call in? Scotland Yard? The FBI? She may look innocent, but her mind has plummeted the deaths of human inequity, and is as sharp as a meat cleaver. This is the first of the twelve adaptations made by the BBC between andall featuring the late, great Joan Hickosn, who is regarded as the definitive Miss Marple. Hickson truly shines as Miss Marple, able to convey a sense of depth in the character, and to really capture Miss Marple as Christie described her: on the outside, seemingly dotty - a fluffy, gentle old lady more concerned with knitting than murder; but on the inside, a detective genius, but very modest, also. The supporting cast are really quite good, too. Gwen Watford is delightful as Mrs Bantry, in whose library the body is found. Her dependence on Miss Marple, and the way that she acts as though Miss Marple were her nanny, always asking questions in a sweet, child-like way is quite charming. Moray Watson whom you may recognise from the Darling Buds of May is also very good as the proud, military man Colonel Bantry, who appears very strong, but, as Miss Marple says, like most military men, is unusually sensitive. The rest of the cast are good too, particularly, as Chief Miss Marple: The Body in the Library Slack, the zealous police officer who is always trying to outdo Miss Marple in detective skills, but rarely succeeds, much to his own chagrin! The period detail is also excellent, and really recreates a Britsoh sea-side resort in the years directly after WWII, with people gradually starting to enjoy themselves again, and really getting into the swing of leisure, dinner and dancing. The costumes are realistic, as are the characters. The eventual solution will surprise you! If you want a more wholesome, realistic Miss Marple, who is more like the Miss Marple of the books, I highly recommend that you watch this. Looking for something to watch? The new film series featuring amateur sleuth Miss Marple is a perfect example. The shrewd and determined spinster of this parish that is Miss Marple is portrayed with steely warmth by Geraldine McEwan, whose ability to be unpleasantly stern is smartly tempered into an appealing eccentricity. The body found at the opening of the first film is that of a young blond woman who dances at the Hotel Majestic and is therefore of dubious character while the library is in the lavish country pile owned by the formerly unblemished Colonel Arthur Bantry James Fox. Dolly briskly ignores a hapless bobby who tries to keep the two from entering the library to view the body. Another Majestic dancer, Josie Mary Stockley identifies the dead blond but it transpires that the elderly, wheelchair bound Conway Jefferson Ian Miss Marple: The Body in the Library was the one who notified the police. It appears he doted on the young dancer and changed his Miss Marple: The Body in the Library in her favor, much to the annoyance of daughter- in-law Adelaide Tara Fitzgerald and son-in-law Mark Jamie Theakston. Miss Marple, of course, sees through the lot of them and McEwan has fun with the inevitable revelations that have baffled the police and surprise everyone. Airs: UK: Dec.
