What Literature Knows: Forays Into Literary Knowledge Production

Merten Kai / What Literature Knows This volume sheds light on the nexus between knowledge and literature. Arranged What Literature Knows historically, contributions address both popular and canonical English and Antje Kley US-American writing from the early modern period to the present. They focus on how historically specific texts engage with epistemological questions in relation to Forays into Literary Knowledge Production material and social forms as well as representation. The authors discuss literature as a culturally embedded form of knowledge production in its own right, which deploys narrative and poetic means of exploration to establish an independent and sometimes dissident archive. The worlds that imaginary texts project are shown to open up alternative perspectives to be reckoned with in the academic articulation and public discussion of issues in economics and the sciences, identity formation and wellbeing, legal rationale and political decision-making. What Literature Knows The Editors Antje Kley is professor of American Literary Studies at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany. Her research interests focus on aesthetic forms and cultural functions of narrative, both autobiographical and fictional, in changing media environments between the eighteenth century and the present. Kai Merten is professor of British Literature at the University of Erfurt, Germany. His research focuses on contemporary poetry in English, Romantic culture in Britain as well as on questions of mediality in British literature and Postcolonial Studies. He is also the founder of the Erfurt Network on New Materialism. -

LOST FOR NEARLY A CENTURY LOVE, LIFE AND LAUGHTER SCREENS AS BFI LFF’S ARCHIVE SPECIAL PRESENTATION WITH LIVE MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT rd [3 OCTOBER, BFI SOUTHBANK] Tuesday 27 August, 10:30am London – The 63rd BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express is thrilled to announce George Pearson’s LOVE, LIFE AND LAUGHTER (1923) as this year’s Archive Special Presentation. Lost for nearly a century, this film was on the BFI 75 Most Wanted list and one of its most sought after titles for decades and has now been carefully restored by the team at the BFI National Archive. Its screening at this year’s Festival gives audiences the chance to fall under the spell of Betty Balfour, Britain’s ‘Queen of Happiness’ and the nation’s biggest star of the 1920s. The presentation will take place at BFI Southbank on Thursday 3rd October, 6.10pm in NFT1 with a live musical accompaniment by Meg Morley as well as an extended introduction by the BFI National Archive’s Silent Curator Bryony Dixon and the BFI’s Film Conservation Manager Kieron Webb. LOVE, LIFE AND LAUGHTER tells the story of a pair of working class youngsters with big dreams – a cheery chorus girl and a serious writer – the film toys with our expectations, blurring the boundaries of reverie and reality, tragedy and comedy. The films aesthetic is extremely evocative of the period, full of Art Deco styling from the overall design to Balfour’s costumes and the film’s set pieces. This restoration is a major event enabling today’s audiences to enjoy a truly vivacious performance from Balfour in one of her key films and adds to our knowledge of director Pearson, often likened to Dickens (whom he admired) for his ability to wring the maximum amount of emotion out of a story and a key figure in British cinema with now only a bare handful of his films survive. -

Agatha Christie - Third Girl CHAPTER ONE HERCULE POIROT was sitting at the breakfast table. At his right hand was a steaming cup of chocolate. He had always had a sweet tooth. To accompany the chocolate was a brioche. It went agreeably with chocolate. He nodded his approval. This was from the fourth shop he had tried. It was a Danish patisserie but infinitely superior to the so-called French one near by. That had been nothing less than a fraud. He was satisfied gastronomically. His stomach was at peace. His mind also was at peace, perhaps somewhat too much so. He had finished his Magnum Opus, an analysis of great writers of detective fiction. He had dared to speak scathingly of Edgar Alien Poe, he had complained of the lack of method or order in the romantic outpourings of Wilkie Collins, had lauded to the skies two American authors who were practically unknown, and had in various other ways given honour where honour was due and sternly withheld it where he considered it was not. He had seen the volume through the press, had looked upon the results and, apart from a really incredible number of printer's errors, pronounced that it was good. He had enjoyed this literary achievement and enjoyed the vast amount of reading he had had to do, had enjoyed snorting with disgust as he flung a book across the floor (though always remembering to rise, pick it up and dispose of it tidily in the waste-paper basket) and had enjoyed appreciatively nodding his head on the rare occasions when such approval was justified. -

CONSULTING ROOM CHAT A History of Sexton Blake The legendary Baker Street detective, Sexton Blake, made his first appearance in an inelegant and nondescript short story, ‘The Missing Millionaire’ by Harry Blyth (under the pen-name Hal Meredeth) in the boys’ story paper The Halfpenny Marvel on 20 December 1893. Blake went on to appear in a handful of equally unimpressive stories by Meredeth, and those inauspicious beginnings might have been enough to kill the character at birth, had he not moved, under the title of “Sexton Blake, Detective”, to 2 the newly launched Union Jack story paper in mid -1894. Blessed with a new set of writers, and with Blake’s world expanded to take in his Baker Street base, his customised ‘plane and car, and his new assistant Tinker, the character became the star of the paper, remaining so even after Union Jack became Detective Weekly in 1933. -

The Unexpected Guest The action takes place in Richard Warwick’s study in South Wales near the Bristol Channel. The will be one fifteen-minute intermission. Agatha Christie Taught at home, as a child, by tutors and a governess, Agatha Christie never attended school. At a very young age, she became adept at creating games to keep herself occupied. A shy child, unable to adequately express her feelings, she first turned to music as a means of expression and, later in life, to writing. In 1914, at the age of 24, she married Archie Christie, a World War I fighter pilot. While he was off at war, she worked as a nurse. It was while working in a hospital during the war that Christie first came up with the idea of writing a detective novel. Although it was completed in a year, it wasn't published until 1920, five years later. The Mysterious Affair at Styles gave the world the inimitable Hercule Poirot, a retired Belgian police officer who was to become one of the most enduring characters in all of fiction. With his waxed moustache and his “little grey cells,” he was a “meticulous, a tidy little man, always neat and orderly, with a slight flavour of absurdity about him.” Christie wrote more than thirty novels featuring Poirot. -

FACULTY OF EDUCATION AND BUSINESS STUDIES Department of Humanities Three Postmodern Detectives Teetering on the Brink of Madness in Paul Auster´s New York Trilogy A Comparison of the Detectives from a Postmodernist and an Autobiographical Perspective Björn Sondén 2020 Student thesis, Bachelor degree, 15 HE English(literature) Supervisor: Iulian Cananau Examiner: Marko Modiano Abstract • As the title suggests, this essay is a postmodern and autobiographical analysis of the three detectives in Paul Auster´s widely acclaimed 1987 novel The New York Trilogy. The focus of this study is centred on a comparison between the three detectives, but also on tracking when and why the detectives devolve into madness. Moreover, it links their descent into madness to the postmodern condition. In postmodernity with its’ incredulity toward Metanarratives’ lives are shaped by chance rather than by causality. In addition, the traditional reliable tools of analysis and reason widely associated with the well-known literary detectives in the era of enlightenment, such as Sherlock Holmes or Dupin, are of little use. All of this is also aggravated by an unforgiving and painful never- ending postmodern present that leaves the detectives with little chance to catch their breath, recover their balance or sanity while being overwhelmed by their disruptive postmodern objects. Consequently, the three detectives are essentially all humiliated and stripped bare of their professional and personal identities with catastrophic results. Hence, if the three detectives start out with a reasonable confidence in their own abilities, their investigations lead them with no exceptions to a point where they are unable to distinguish reality from their postmodern paranoia and madness. -
