Dalnavert Museum and Visitors' Centre is a cultural hub and event centre with a commitment to preserving and maintaining the museum's buildings, grounds, and collection while also building partnerships with like-minded organizations. Visitor experiences include presenting engaging programs and exhibits that interpret the history of the house, and 's early heritage.

The Executive Director position is available for an experienced leader who will work with the Board and will lead staff and volunteers to another level in its evolution. Dalnavert is financially stable and well positioned to expand its business, partnerships, visitor numbers and membership base.

The successful candidate will possess strong business, financial, operational and management skills and have the experience and ability to successfully lead a diverse group of people in this non-profit charity. Practical knowledge and experience in fundraising and in partnership development is required. Demonstrated proficiency in leading new strategic planning and direction and in bringing innovation and creative approaches to the position is desired. An appreciation of history, heritage and historical sites and artifacts is essential, curatorial training an asset. Working language is English, a second language – French or other language(s)an asset.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR POSITION

DALNAVERT MUSEUM AND VISITOR CENTRE

Dalnavert Museum and Visitor Centre is located on Treaty 1 Land that consists of the territories of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and is the homeland of the Métis Nation

The Dalnavert Museum was home to former Premier, Police Magistrate, and lawyer Sir Hugh John Macdonald, and his family. Site history extends beyond 1929 when the Macdonalds left the house. Subsequent owners transformed it into a boarding/rooming house. In 1969, it was sold to a development company who intended to make the grounds a parking lot. In the 1970s, the Manitoba Historical Society (MHS) together with several historical activists worked to buy the house, ultimately succeeding. Working with the City of Winnipeg and other organizations, MHS attained grants to restore the home. In 2013, he MHS closed the doors of the museum. A dedicated group created Friends of Dalnavert Museum Inc., a not-for-profit charity which assumed ownership. In 2015, Dalnavert Museum and Visitor Centre re-opened.

Location: The Executive Director will lead Dalnavert Museum and Visitor Centre at 61 Carlton Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Salary: This is a full time, salaried position.

Staff compliment: Two direct reports – (.7 positions plus additional hours for special events and programming)

Volunteers – 85 – of those approximately 20 (at any time) do tours on a weekly/monthly basis: other volunteer work includes gardeners, special events volunteers, an education committee, Board of Directors and Board Committees: volunteers contributed 6762 hours in the last fiscal year

General Points Position Related:

THE OPPORTUNITY

As Executive Director, you are a dynamic and innovative leader with the vision, experience and passion to guide the staff, volunteers and Board of Dalnavert Museum to new and exciting goals. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is both hands-on and strategic, responsible for the management and operations of all facets of the Museum and Visitor Centre and will play a significant and instrumental role in creating the next chapter of development for the organization. You will lead, inspire and empower your dedicated team of volunteers and staff to strive for new and creative ways to connect with diverse audiences and to engage the community through exhibitions and programs. As a seasoned professional in your craft, you use your experience to drive results through inspirational and effective leadership. With a visionary, entrepreneurial outlook you will build on the existing strong foundation and use your leadership capabilities to bring together all staff and volunteers to a focussed vision of a strong and diverse future for Dalnavert.

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Demonstrate results as an experienced leader with a minimum of 5 years at a non-profit organization (progressively more senior roles) Degree in Business Administration, Museum Studies, Arts Administration or equivalent experience, supplemented by five years of related non-profit management; Excellent stakeholder management skills, experience in reporting to a Board of Directors Experienced business leader able to operate in non-profit environment, build alliances with government and business and manage ongoing relationships with all sectors Capability to develop risk analyses and balance time-cost ratios in order to pursue the most Inclusive and strategic leadership, vision, collaboration and team building. Strong financial management skills and experience in creating, managing, presenting and interpreting budgets. Ability to monitor income and expenditure against the allocated budget. Proven ability to successfully develop and implement long-term strategic and annual tactical plans with measured results. Experienced and knowledgeable in marketing and public relations; particularly as they relate to growing ticket and other earned income revenue. This would include an understanding and awareness of the uses of social media, data analytics and the digital world in building brand and engagement. Experience in leading, managing fundraising strategies and campaigns and identifying new sources and increased levels of contributed income. Capability to develop risk analyses and balance time-cost ratios in order to pursue the most appropriate fundraising activities with the highest chance of success. Outstanding communication and presentation skills. Able to speak and write persuasively and serve as a spokesperson for the company in public and in the media. Demonstrated engagement and cultural leadership in the wider community. Experience in dealing with facility management including: ongoing property stewardship, as well as project management of renovations, leasehold improvements and maintenance. Experience and appreciation for the needs and challenges in short and long term management of heritage assets and house artifacts

RESPONSIBILITY AREAS: Works in conjunction with the Board to develop the strategic direction and establish initiatives to fulfill the mission of the Museum and increase local, provincial, national awareness and prominence. Ensure that there is an administrative organizational structure is in place that has the capacity to execute the strategic plan. Develop a business plan and an annual budget that achieves the advancement of the vision and the strategic plan to be approved by the Board of Directors. Develop an overall financial strategy for the organization so that there are funds to advance the strategic plan, the vision and longer-term projects while ensuring financial sustainability. Secure a robust and diverse support base for Dalnavert by establishing, managing and enhancing existing and new relationships with key sponsors and donors, including governments, to facilitate the creation of new and renewed sources of major gifts, sponsorships and grants. Prepare appropriate financial reports regarding fiscal management of the Museum for the review of the Finance Officer and the Board. Ensure compliance with all government remittances and report status to the Board. Directs the museum's operations, to include development, education and public programming, finance, external communications, and staffing. Serves as spokesperson and chief advocate for the Museum. Establishes strong partnerships in the community. Enhances the Museum’s public image to expand interest and support. Provide leadership to enable the creation and implementation of an annual fundraising strategy and campaign, including working collaboratively with staff, volunteers, Board and Board committee. Lead the creation and implementation of an annual fundraising strategy and campaign, alignment with the vision and the strategic plan and including working collaboratively with staff, volunteers, Board and Board committee. Leadership of fundraising and development activities, including grant writing and developing relationships with foundations, corporations, and individual donors. Secure a robust and diverse support base for Dalnavert by establishing, managing and enhancing existing and new relationships with key sponsors and donors, including governments, to facilitate the creation of new and renewed sources of major gifts, sponsorships and grants. Directs the overall development of public relations and marketing initiatives including development of an effective communications plan to raise the profile of the museum. Manages, maintains the property and facilities of the Museum, as well as the collections held in public trust. Annually evaluate the advancement of the strategic plan and adjust accordingly. Develop and foster a workplace culture that maintains the highest standards of excellence, equality, creativity, collaboration, inclusiveness, and fiscal, operational, and organizational integrity. Ensure compliance with labour, occupational health and safety and human rights standards. Represent Dalnavert with key local, provincial and national government officials, industry executives, strategic partners, donors, members, patrons, and other relevant sectors including public and private speaking opportunities. Successfully manage all aspects of relationships with key stakeholder. Establish a strong, collaborative and respectful working relationship with the Winnipeg Foundation holders of the Dalnavert Endowment Fund. Assume responsibility of the direct fiscal management of the organization within the approved budget, ensuring optimized resource utilization, and maintaining a positive financial position including the management of cash flow and approval of capital expenditures and acquisitions. Provide leadership to Finance and Administration, ensuring sound financial structures, regulatory practices and accurate reporting systems are in place including preparing the audited financial statements of both organizations.
