He’s the man who designed the legendary Big Biba store, who went on to work as Paul McCartney’s personal designer, who created the livery for Formula 1 teams (and for a London bus-route), and whose style helped define the restaurant and club environment of the ‘80s. When he was first approached to do this exhibition, he wanted to call it Jammy Bastard*, but wiser counsels prevailed and – rather more sensibly – it’s now named after his most celebrated single piece of work. In fact, that’s pretty much been the story of his life: having to be talked out of the consequences of his own flippancy. But he still insists that Jammy Bastard sums up his career. As he once pointed out, he has ‘managed by luck, pleading and bribery to work on some truly iconic projects around the world, and have a thoroughly wondrous time.’ To begin near the beginning: he spent his schooldays at Latymer Upper Marlboro country, 1965; School in Hammersmith, and his nights hanging around Eel Pie Island and the Chad Hall’s studio in the badlands of London W8.

Andy has a rich musical heritage, starting from his sixties bands The Preachers and The Herd, where he gave the talented teenager Peter Frampton his Nirst job, on through an endless list of recording sessions with artists such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Halliday, Dusty SpringNield, Cilla Black,Tim Hardin, Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, Lesley Duncan, Paul McCartney, Carly Simon and many, many more, whilst part-forming the ultimate 70’s pop-rock band, Judas Jump (opening the Isle of Wight Festival 1970) and also appearing with the cult folk band Storyteller. He played keyboards for Peter Frampton in the early 1970s, switching to bass for several tours after Rick Wills departed the band. Andy was the surrogate Roger Waters in the original Pink Floyd - The Wall tour in 1980 and 1981. He also played keyboards for Pink Floyd's The Final Cut album and Roger Waters subsequent release Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. He continued an intermittent solo recording career, whilst starting to work with Status Quo in 1976, Nirst as a session musician, and then as a full time member, recording Rockin' All Over The World with the band in 1978. Andy Bown has released Nive solo albums, the Nirst of which, Gone To My Head was released in 1972.

Hannah Yeldham was asked in April by her manager at work at the Rosie Hospital Neonatal Unit in Cambridge, if she knew anyone who knew anything about ‘lighting a building purple’ to promote World Prematurity Day 2016 (WPD). Hannah contacted Simon Fisher, having seen his contribution to Night of Heritage Light (www.nohl-sll.org) After a couple of emails a ‘WPD 2016 working party’ was formed, which consisted of Hannah, Simon and 2 colleagues at the Rosie Hospital. A few months on and the initial idea had grown and developed and we welcomed on board more ‘lighting people’ and communication teams from work. World Prematurity Day was 17th November 2016 and from an initial meeting we now have a photographic exhibition that Hannah masterminded, an invitation only reception, purple floodlighting of the WRVS atria at The Rosie Hospital, buildings lit purple around the County, several organisations in Cambridge on board, cakes and representatives from Bliss Charity attending the event. Social media and the local press are interested in raised awareness, which was fantastic! The event featured on Look East on the night of 17th November. ‘We even had a Paralympic 2016 gold medallist attending on the night’ says Hannah. ‘It was such a pleasure to give some time, effort and energy to the project’ says Simon Fisher. ‘I offer my thanks to the leadership team at Gamlingay Village College and the Friends of St Marys Church in Gamlingay for letting me light their buildings and help raise awareness of this really important issue.’ ‘In addition to the sites in Gamlingay, the Cambridge Corn Exchange and Cambridge based lighting manufacturer, Pulsar Lighting, will be purple for the night.
