Music Notes: and Lee Hays composed in 1949 in support of what was known as the progressive movement. The song was covered by and became a huge hit for Peter, Paul and Mary. The late singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen released his song Democracy in 1992. With lyrics that celebrated a better land the Canadian singer pointed to the virtues of our way of life: “Sail on, sail on O mighty Ship of State, to the Shores of Need, Past the Reefs of Greed…” Woody Guthrie composed in 1940 in part because he wanted a fresh counterpoint to Kate Smith’s ubiquitous rendition of God Bless America that was being played on the radio at that time. Guthrie’s tune has become a favorite rallying song for freedom and democracy.

Special thanks to Cedar Lane’s David Meredith and guest pianist Chris Koelzer for leading the music in this service while the Choir and Jasmin Lee take the morning off.
