Nina Kraviz Presents MASSEDUCTION Rewired PR artist: Nina Kraviz, St. Vincent, Various remixers. title: Nina Kraviz Presents MASSEDUCTION Rewired date: 13th December 2019 label: Loma Vista format: Full digital album, Vinyl LP + 3 Vinyl EPs. pre-order: https://bodega.lomavistarecordings.com Employing her acclaimed curatorial skills to an immense tracklist, Nina Kraviz invites a diverse roster of artists - luminaries in their respective genres - for an eclectic remix package of St. Vincent's Grammy award winning album MASSEDUCTION. From frantic IDM and manic footwork to glistening house and meditative dubstep (via just about everything in between) her selections build an inspired portfolio from an abundance of talent. Genre-bending interpretations feature strongly throughout. Jlin’s mutated footwork subverts ‘Smoking Section’ from melancholic balladry to a jittery exuberant march, whilst Mala’s take, although similarly sinister, submerges Annie Clark’s vocals in a drowsy pool of synthetic bass and fragmented percussion. Nina Kraviz’s own ‘Gabber Me Gently remix’ of ‘Fast Slow Disco’ sweeps the radiant texture of the original from underneath, replacing it with a hypnotic run of high-speed kick drums, whilst her remix of ‘New York’ is part minimal techno, part ghostly ASMR, but quintessentially hers. Further disorientation comes from a number of трип affiliates; PTU offer two remixes - a woozy minimal take on ‘Pills’ and a relentless spin of ‘Fear The Future’ - whilst Roma Zuckerman and Buttechno provide direct-to-dancefloor cuts of ‘Young Lover’ and ‘Saviour’ respectively. Elsewhere, Laurel Halo makes a spiralling techno animation of the former, as UK evergreens Pearson Sound and Batu offer curiously stripped back takes on ‘Dancing With A Ghost’ and ‘Hang On Me’. Much like the tapestry of moods on MASSEDUCTION, the remixes mould varying sentiments into a sea of different atmospheres. Bjarki and Population One (aka Terrence Dixon) each work up carefully restrained tension on ‘Pills’ - a stark contrast to Hieroglyphic Being and Emika’s maximal, glowing takes on ‘Sugarboy’. Warmer still are Midland’s powerful, low-slung take on the title track, Fred P’s breakbeat reshape of ‘Happy Birthday Jonny’, a heartfelt disco repurposing of ‘Fast Slow Disco’ from Steffi and two joyful, melodic cuts from EOD. Released as a full digitial package, vinyl album and 3 EPs, Nina Kraviz Presents MASSEDUCTION Rewired is a comprehensive document of the electronic subversion of the mainstream, offering an inspired dissemination of ideas from the rich source material. At times fragmented, at others familiar, it takes the spirit of MASSEDUCTION and runs with it in every way possible. Vinyl Album SIDE A 1. New York (Nina Kraviz Vocal Mix) 2. Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

Issue 142 AUGUST 2ND, 2021 Is there a reader among us who doesn’t dig ZZ Top? We mourn the passing of Joseph Michael “Dusty” Hill (72), bassist, vocalist and keyboardist for the tres hombres. Blending blues, boogie, bone-crushing rock, born-for-MTV visuals, humor and outrageousness – they once took a passel of live animals on stage as part of their 1976 – 1977 Worldwide Texas Tour – Hill, drummer Frank Beard and guitarist Billy F. Gibbons have scorched stages worldwide. As a friend said, “it’s amazing how just three guys could make that much sound.” Rest in peace, Mr. Hill. In this issue: Anne E. Johnson gets inspired by the music of Renaissance composer William Byrd, and understands The Animals. Wayne Robins reviews Native Sons, the superb new album from Los Lobos. Ray Chelstowski interviews The Immediate Family, featuring studio legends Waddy Wachtel, Lee Sklar, Russ Kunkel and others, in an exclusive video interview. Abstract Using Antoine Hennion’s “anti-musicology”, this research project proposes a methodology for studying music production that empowers production choices as the primary analytical tool. It employs this methodology to analyze Kesha’s Rainbow, Janelle Monáe’s Dirty Computer, and St. Vincent’s Masseduction according to four, encompassing groups of production elements: musical elements, lyrical elements, personal elements, and narrative elements. All three albums were critical and commercial successes, and analyzing their respective choices offers valuable insight into the practice of successful producers that could not necessarily be captured by methodologies traditionally used for studying production, such as the interview.

Its original icons were overwhelmingly male—a pattern being subverted in both contemporary iterations of glam and the music industry as a whole. Fluid portrayals of gender, performative sexuality, camp, and vibrant, eye-catching visuals are among the most identifiable traits which signify the glam style, though science fiction also serves as a common thread between many glam stars, both past and present. The superficial linkages between artists like David Bowie, Prince, Janelle Monáe, and St. Vincent provide

  • St. Vincent Bio (January 2021)
St. Vincent Bio (January 2021) Annie Clark made her recorded debut as St. Vincent in 2007 with Marry Me, and has since become one of the most innovative and enigmatic presences in modern music. St. Vincent’s subsequent albums would include Actor (2009), Strange Mercy (2011), and her self-titled fourth album and winner of the 2014 GRAMMY for Best Alternative Album, making her only the second female artist ever to win in that category. In addition to these solo works, St. Vincent joined with David Byrne to record and release the collaborative album Love This Giant in 2012, played with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear of Nirvana at the band’s 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, and performed on the season finale of Saturday Night Live that same year. In 2017, working with co-producer Jack Antonoff, St. Vincent created a defining statement with MASSEDUCTION. As ambitious as it was accessible, the album broke St. Vincent into the U.S. and UK top 10s while landing at #1 on the Best of 2017 lists of Jon Pareles of The New York Times and The Guardian—and placing high in the year-end rankings of The AV Club, Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, Mashable, The New York Daily News, the NME, Noisey, Paste, Pitchfork, Q, Stereogum, USA Today, and more. In 2019, MASSEDUCTION's title track won the GRAMMY for Best Rock Song, while the album won Best Recording Package. St. Vincent’s 2018 album, MassEducation, revealed another dimension of 2017’s universally acclaimed MASSEDUCTION. Recorded live in the studio by Annie Clark on vocals and Thomas Bartlett on piano over two nights in August 2017, the album lays bare the exquisite songcraft of its other half, rendering songs like “Slow Disco” and “Savior” and their subjects in vivid, vulnerable new light.
