Love, Loss and What I Wore Makes Its Milwaukee Premiere at the Marcus Center’S Wilson Theater at Vogel Hall Love, Loss and What I Wore Makes Its Milwaukee Premiere at the Marcus Center’s Wilson Theater at Vogel Hall March 13-15 Tickets On Sale Now! Proving that a great show is always in fashion, Love, Loss and What I Wore is a play written by Nora and Delia Ephron based on the 1995 book of the same name by Ilene Beckerman. With its intimate collection of monologues, the show uses clothing and accessories and the memories they trigger to tell funny and poignant stories that all women can relate to. Directed by Karen Carpenter, the actresses sit side-by- side with script in-hand, deftly guiding the audience through an evening if humor, nostalgia and, of course, fashion. Produced by Minneapolis based Troupe America, Inc. for a 2015 national tour, Love, Loss and What I Wore was initially presented as a part of the 2008 summer series at Guild Hall in East Hampton, New York, and then as a benefit series in the DR2 Theatre in New York in early 2009. Later the same year, the show was produced off Broadway as an ongoing commercial theatrical production at the Westside Theatre in New York, where it continued to run as the second-longest running show in the theatre’s history. The production and its cast received positive critical attention. The production won the 2010 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience as well as the 2010 Broadway.com Audience Award for Favorite New Off-Broadway Play. Nora Ephron was a writer, director and producer best known for writing the screenplays of romantic comedy films. She received three Academy Award nominations for Original Screenplay, for Silkwood (1983), When Harry Met Sally (1989) and Sleepless in Seattle (1993). She had also written five best-selling books. Ephron sometimes co-authored screenplays with her sister, writer-producer Delia Ephron, including You’ve Got Mail (1998), Hanging Up (2000), and Bewitched (2005). Nora Ephron wrote the introduction to Beckerman’s eponymous 1995 book, which she immediately thought had dramatic possibilities. She identified with the stories in Love, Loss and What I Wore because the book “is not about fashion; it is about what clothes really are to us, those moments when we are constantly trying to find our identity through them”. Once she decided to adapt Love, Loss and What I Wore into a play, she and her sister emailed 100 women for stories. The show’s monologues are sourced largely from Beckerman’s book. The Ephrons wove together a collection of stories adapted from the book with recollections of friends, including Rosie O’Donnell. Performances are Friday, March 13 at 7:30 pm, Saturday, March 14 at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm and Sunday, March 15 at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $45 and are subject to change. Tickets are on sale now and are available at the Marcus Center Box Office at 929 North Water Street, Downtown Milwaukee, by phone at 414-273-7206, or online at MarcusCenter.org or Ticketmaster.com. 1 Discussion Questions for Women in Film Gathering, September 11, 2012: Focal Film: Heartburn (1986; U.S.; Written by Nora Ephron; Directed by Mike Nichols) Nora Ephron (1941‐2012) was a journalist, playwright, novelist, producer, screenwriter, and director. She was one of the most prominent female talents ever to work in American film. Nora Ephron was the eldest of four daughters born to screenwriters Henry and Phoebe Ephron (Belles on Their Toes, Carousel, Desk Set, There’s No Business Like Show Business, Take Her She’s Mine (loosely based on the letters Nora sent home from college)). Growing up in Beverly Hills, Nora had contact with many great Hollywood writers of the 1940s and 1950s (e.g., Charles Brackett, Julius Epstein). At then all‐female Wellesley, she encountered many young women seeking their “MRS” degree; she later claimed that her alma mater had turned out a generation of “docile women.” She chose a career track, working as a journalist for The New York Post and Esquire, and eventually transitioned into novels and screenplays. All four of the daughters of Henry and Phoebe Ephron became successful writers. Nora Ephron wrote the roman à clef Heartburn in 1983, a novelization of her volatile second marriage to Carl Bernstein of Washington Post/Watergate fame. The novel was adapted for film in 1986, with friend and frequent collaborator Mike Nichols directing. Some other Ephron films you might recognize are Silkwood (1983; Screenwriter), When Harry Met Sally (1989; Producer and Screenwriter), My Blue Heaven (1990; Producer and Screenwriter), Sleepless in Seattle (1993; Director and Screenwriter), Michael (1996; Producer, Director, and Screenwriter), You’ve Got Mail (1998; Producer, Director, and Screenwriter), and Julie and Julia (2009; Producer, Director, and Screenwriter).

  • Semiotic Approach to the Analysis of Interpersonal Communication in Modern Comedies
SEMIOTIC APPROACH TO THE ANALYSIS OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION IN MODERN COMEDIES Maria Kochetkova A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2010 Committee: Ellen W Gorsevski, Advisor Lara Lengel Donald McQuarie © 2010 Maria Kochetkova All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ellen W Gorsevski, Advisor The present research takes a cultural prospective on the tensions in interpersonal relations based on the movies of the 90’s, such as Sleepless in Seattle (1993), As Good As It Gets (1997), and You’ve Got Mail (1998). The romantic comedy films of the 90’s were innovative in their genre, for they have touched upon serious drama subjects, hiding behind the “romantic” and “comedy’ style. Through the prism of the semiotic analysis I try to analyze how cultural codes play into the formation of hidden conflicts in interpersonal communication, mainly loneliness. Umberto Eco’s theory of the openness of the “author’s message” permits to illustrate the many possibilities of interpretation by the audience of the given films and allows an in-depth analysis of the cultural situation. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Firstly, I would like to thank my advisor, Dr Ellen Gorsevski, who has not only supported me throughout this process, but through her guidance I was able to see my research in a different way. I would like to thank my family, especially my mom and dad, Natalia and Alexander, without whom not only this project would not be possible, but only through their guidance and support I was able to understand the true meaning of education.
