By Commissioner Ann Marshall Young There are many amazing women in Maryland and Cottage City’s history. These are just a few, to give you an idea of some of the “greats” we can claim: Jazz singer Billie Holiday (1915 – 1959) was born Eleanora Fagan, but took her father’s surname, Holiday, and “Billie” from a silent film star. As a child she lived in poverty in East Baltimore, and later gave her first performance at Fell’s Point. In 1933 she was “discovered” in a Harlem nightclub, and soon became wildly popular, with a beautiful voice and her own, truly unique style. Her well-known song, “Strange Fruit,” described the horrors of lynchings in Jim Crow America. Through her singing, she raised consciousness about racism as well as about the beauties of African-American culture. Marine biologist and conservationist Rachel Carson (1907-1964) wrote the book Silent Spring, which, with her other writings, is credited with advancing the global environmental movement. Although opposed by chemical companies, her work led to a nationwide ban on DDT and other pesticides, and inspired a grassroots environmental movement that led to the creation of the U.S.

By Kathryn Schulz August 15, 2016 Stories of the Underground Railroad provide the possibility of moral comfort in a profoundly uncomfortable past. Illustration by Leigh Guldig The crate arrived, via overland express, one spring evening in 1849. Three feet long, two feet wide, and two and a half feet deep, it had been packed the previous morning in Richmond, Virginia, then carried by horse cart to the local office of the Adams Express Company. From there, it was taken to the railroad depot, loaded onto a train, and, on reaching the Potomac, transferred to a steamer, where, despite its label—THIS SIDE UP WITH CARE—it was placed upside down until a tired passenger tipped it over and used it as a seat. After arriving in the nation’s capital, it was loaded onto a wagon, dumped out at the train station, loaded onto a luggage car, sent on to Philadelphia, unloaded onto another wagon, and, finally, delivered to 31 North Fifth Street. The person to whom the box had been shipped, James Miller McKim, was waiting there to receive it. When he opened it, out scrambled a man named Henry Brown: five feet eight inches tall, two hundred pounds, and, as far as anyone knows, the first person in United States history to liberate himself from slavery by, as he later wrote, “getting myself conveyed as dry goods to a free state.” McKim, a white abolitionist with the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society, had by then been working for the Underground Railroad for more than a decade, and he was awed by the courage and drama of Brown’s escape, and of others like it.

Introduction In the movie Spring Breakers (2012), by Harmony Korine, a group of young college girls travel to Florida to participate to the Spring Break, the well-known mass party. It is an escape from the monotony of university, classes, routine and the world they’ve always known: “I’m tired of seeing always the same things”, they complain as a justification for the trip. During the break, their quest for adrenaline and limit experiences quickly escalates: once the excitement of the party ceases, they end up robbing a store at gun point and getting involved with an obscure drug dealer that leads them into a full-scale shooting against a rival criminal organization. The movie seems to suggest that even the most extreme and limit experiences, as exciting and powerful as they can be, are not able to provide a steady, authentic life, some substance to hold on to, just intense chaos and violence. It is tempting to read the film as a growing realization of the limits the rebellious- Dionysian1 escape, one that seems central in the cultural logic of late capitalism; that it may have become an exhausted or sterile path towards emancipation —what the characters of the movie ultimately seek—and that, perhaps, a comeback, an acceptance of an authentic, solid and monotonous existence is desirable.

In his memoir entitled I Am Brian Wilson, he details the exhilarating highs and lows of his life from his failing memory, including the sources of his creative inspiration throughout the decades. - - - - - - - - - EARLY LIFE: Brian Wilson was born on June 20th, 1942 to Audree and Murry Wilson. Growing up in Hawthorne, California, Wilson exhibited unusual musical abilities, such as being able to hum the melody from When the Caissons Go Rolling Along after only a few verses had been sung by his father before the age of one. Surprisingly, a few years later, he was discovered to have diminished hearing in his right ear. The exact cause of this hearing loss is unclear, though theories range from him simply being born partially deaf to a blow to the head from his father, or a neighborhood bully, being to blame. While Wilson’s father was a reasonable provider, he was often abusive. A minor musician and songwriter, he also encouraged his children in this field in numerous ways.     TONI MORRISON DISCUSSION GUIDE (630) 232-0780 [email protected] AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY The second of the four children of George and Ramah (Willis) Wofford, Toni Morrison was born Chloe Anthony Wofford in Lorain, Ohio, a steel town twenty-five miles west of Cleveland. During the worst years of the Great Depression, her father worked as a car washer, a welder in a local steel mill, and road-construction worker, while her mother, a feisty, determined woman, dealt with callous landlords and impertinent social workers. "When an eviction notice was put on our house, she tore it off," Morrison remembered, as quoted in People. "If there were maggots in our flour, she wrote a letter to [President] Franklin Roosevelt. My mother believed something should be done about inhuman situations." In an article for the New York Times Magazine, Morrison discussed her parents' contrasting attitudes toward white society and the effect of those conflicting views on her own perception of the quality of black life in America. Ramah Wofford believed that, in time, race relations would improve; George Wofford distrusted "every word and every gesture of every white man on Earth." Both parents were convinced, however, that "all succor and aid came from themselves and their neighborhood." Consequently, Morrison, although she attended a multiracial school, was raised in "a basically racist household" and grew up "with more than a child's contempt for white people." After graduating with honors from high school in 1949, Toni Morrison enrolled at Howard University in Washington, DC. Morrison devoted most of her free time to the Howard University Players, a campus theater company she described as "a place where hard work, thought, and talent" were praised and "merit was the only rank." She often appeared in campus productions, and in the summers she traveled throughout the South with a repertory troupe made up of faculty members and students.
