As far as full- fledged Haitian Creole-English dictionaries are concerned, only one has been published and it is now more than ten years old. It is the compilers’ hope that this new dictionary will go a long way toward filling the vacuum existing in modern Creole lexicography. • Tuning and Intervals
CHAPTER 5 Tuning and Intervals Have you ever watched someone tune a guitar? Or maybe even a piano? How do they know which sound is the right one? The question has been asked for a long time and different cultures at different times have found different answers. Some Asian cultures for instance tune their instruments differently then we do. Also, 2000 years ago, the Greek were using differnt tuning ideas then we are nowadays. Of course the Greek did not have guitars or pianos at that time, but they were still thinking about tuning for their instruments and about the structure of music in general. The pan flute is an instrument that was used by the ancient Greeks and is still being played today. It consists of several pipes of bamboo of increasing lengths. The name is areferencetotheGreekgodPanwho is playing the flute in Figure 1. Figure 1. Pan playing the pan flute. For the next investigations you need to make your own “pan flute” out of straws. Straws for bubble tea work better since they have a wider diameter. You need to plug the bottom with a finger to get a clear pitch. Put your lower lip against the opening of the straw and blow across the opening (not into it). It helps to have some tension in the lips, as if you were making the sounds “p”. Also the shorter the straw the easier it is to produce a clear sound. 1. Take a straw and cover the bottom hole while blowing over the top hole. Practice until you can hear a clear note.

The group has met weekly since that date with a steady membership of seven. A weekly topic is usually drawn at random from a varied list submitted by each of us. The advantage of this type of group for my writing is twofold. First, it provides a source of external discipline which encourages me to write for an immediate reason and audience (which I aim to please). Second, and more important, the cooperation and encouragement and example of my fellow writers has allowed me to expand my style beyond anything I could have imagined before. I dedicate this first batch of work to my colleagues, to my dear friends, without whom none of this would have been remotely possible. Thank you all.
