Its chemical name is 9-methoxy[1,3]dioxolo[4,5-g]furo[2,3-b]quinoline and it was isolated from several genera of Rutaceae. Continuing a survey of the chemistry of species of the largely continental African genus Vepris, we investigate a species previously referred to as Vepris sp. 1 of Congo. From the leaves of Vepris sp. 1 we report six compounds. The compounds were three furoquinoline alkaloids, kokusaginine (1), maculine (2), and flindersiamine (3), two acridone alkaloids, arborinine (4) and 1-hydroxy-3-methoxy-10-methylacridone (5), and the triterpenoid, ß-amyrin (6). Compounds 1-4 are commonly isolated from other Vepris species, compound 5 has been reported before once, from Malagasy Vepris pilosa, while this is the first report of ß-amyrin from Vepris. This combination of compounds has never before been reported from any species of Vepris. We test the hypothesis that Vepris sp.1 is new to science and formally describe it as Vepris teva, unique in the genus in that the trifoliolate leaves are subsessile, with the median petiolule far exceeding the petiole in length. -

One of the most expressive alternative movements in Brazil, known as “Bioenergético” or “Araminho”, was disseminated in the 2000s, mainly in the Amazon region, regions that are developing and with high rates of tropical diseases. Thus, this study aimed to conduct an ethnobotanical survey with Bioenergético teams through the application of semi-structured questionnaires to 14 pairs of practitioners, in order to list the species of plants used in the treatment of malaria and dengue and observe the socioeconomic types of the participants. As for the socioeconomic profile, the proportion of men and women is the same among the participants, who generally are maried are between 33 and 62 years old, live in the countryside and are all catholic. Fifty six species from 31 botanical families were mentioned, of which 37 species were used for the treat- ment of malaria and 54 for dengue, with many plants being used in both treatments. -

Received: 25 November 2017; Accepted: 21 December 2017; Published: 21 December 2017 Abstract: Three new prenylated furoquinoline alkaloids named lecomtequinoline A (1), B (2), and C (3), together with the known compounds anhydroevoxine (4), evoxine (5), dictamnine (6), N-methylflindersine (7), evoxanthine (8), hesperidin, lupeol, b-sitosterol, stigmasterol, b-sitosterol-3-O-b-D-glucopyranoside, stearic acid, and myristyl alcohol, were isolated by bioassay-guided fractionation of the methanolic extracts of leaves and stem of Vepris lecomteana. The structures of compounds were determined by spectroscopic methods (NMR, MS, UV,and IR) and by comparison with previously reported data. Crude extracts of leaves and stem displayed high antimicrobial activity,with Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) (values of 10.1–16.5 and 10.2–20.5 µg/mL, respectively), against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas agarici, Micrococcus luteus, and Staphylococcus warneri, while compounds 1–6 showed values ranging from 11.1 to 18.7 µg/mL or were inactive, suggesting synergistic effect. -

Plant natural products (NPs) represent a promising source of antibacterial lead compounds that could help fill the drug discovery pipeline in response to the growing antibiotic resistance crisis. The major strength of plant NPs lies in their rich and unique chemodiversity, their worldwide distribution and ease of access, their various antibacterial modes of action, and the proven clinical effectiveness of plant extracts from which they are isolated. While many studies have tried to summarize NPs with antibacterial activities, a comprehensive review with rigorous selection criteria has never been performed. In this work, the literature from 2012 to 2019 was systematically reviewed to highlight plant-derived compounds with antibacterial activity by focusing on their growth inhibitory activity. A total of 459 compounds are included in this Review, of which 50.8% are phenolic derivatives, 26.6% are terpenoids, 5.7% are alkaloids, and 17% are classified as other metabolites. A selection of 183 compounds is further discussed regarding their antibacterial activity, biosynthesis, structure−activity relationship, mechanism of action, and potential as antibiotics. Emerging trends in the field of antibacterial drug discovery from plants are also discussed. -
