Deadline: December 9th How to Vote: www.sla.org/evote Overview of Comments Made at Fall Business Meeting Regarding Name Change Summarized below are some interesting points that were raise. These are being shared not to sway the vote of Georgia Chapter members in either direction. It is simply a summary of the thoughts and ideas that emerged in the Fall Business meeting discussion The name change is an attempt to broaden the membership base of the association. By changing to a name that resonates with a larger group of information and knowledge professionals, the Association will be able to grow and sustain itself. While the name change removes the L word from the Association name it does not change the job titles of the individual members. It will not change the roles individual members play in their current organization, nor will it detract from the identity of the individual member who still is associated with a title that contains the word librarian. An interesting alternative to the currently proposed name change would be to retain the current name and simply change the word Special to Specialized. SLA would stand for Specialized Libraries Association. Another option could include Specialized Libraries and Information Professional Association.

This proposal is framed by three questions. First, what are the recent findings from urban design and planning research and practice about the proper amount, ownership structure, and design of parking to enable walkable urbanism? Second, what specific characteristics enable parking to be integrated into dense urban districts without sacrificing the social significance of the public realm? Third, what policies and design strategies can be developed, based on the evidence above, to promote the creation of walkable urbanism? Three urban districts in Atlanta are the focus of the detailed analysis of parking. These are Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead. These three districts were chosen because of their similar status as the three largest commercial and financial districts in the city, but unique orientation to the automobile. Their current parking requirements are compared based on quantity as well as other factors. Parcel data is used to show the parcels with parking as a principle land used to roughly estimate the amount of street activity generated by parking.

The Atlanta Regional Commission reviewed the DRI with regard to conflicts to regional plans, goals, and policies and impacts it might have on the activities, plans, goals, and policies of other local jurisdictions and state, federal, and other agencies. The finding does not address whether the DRI is or is not in the best interest of the local government. Submitting Local Government: City of Atlanta Name of Proposal: 1075 Peachtree Review Type: Development of Regional Impact Date Opened: Dec 20 2006 Date Closed: March 2 2007 FINDING: After reviewing the information submitted for the review, and the comments received from affected agencies, the Atlanta Regional Commission finding is that the DRI is in the best interest of the Region, and therefore, of the State. Additional Comments: During the review, the realignment of the eastern leg of 11th Street was identified to eliminate the need for side-street split phase and improving upon the existing grid system in Midtown. ARC staff met with the developer, City of Atlanta, Midtown Alliance, and GRTA to discuss the benefits and impacts of improving upon the intersection. Attached at the end of this report, the Daniel Corporation has provided estimated ownership costs and impacts associated with the proposed realignment.
