On the role of virtual work in Levi-Civita’s parallel transport Giuseppe Iurato, University of Palermo, Italy; e-mail: [email protected] Giuseppe Ruta, Sapienza University, Rome, Italy; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract The current literature on history of science reports that Levi-Civita’s parallel transport was motivated by his attempt to provide the covariant derivative of absolute differential calculus with a geometrical interpretation.1 Levi-Civita’s memoir on the subject was ex- plicitly aimed at simplifying the geometrical computation of the curvature of a Riemannian manifold. In the present paper we wish to point out the possible role implicitly played by the principle of virtual work in Levi-Civita’s conceptual reasoning to formulate parallel transport. 1 Introduction Tullio Levi-Civita (1873-1941) was one of the leading Italian mathematicians of his time. He showed his attitude towards mathematics and mathematical physics since his high-school days, when he offered an ingenious attempt to prove Euclid’s fifth postulate on parallel lines under the supervision of his teacher in mathematics, Paolo Gazzaniga (1853-1930), a scholar in num- ber theory.2 Levi-Civita took a degree in mathematics from the university of Padua, where among his teachers he had Giuseppe Veronese (1853-1917),3 Francesco Flores d’Arcais (1849- 1927),4 Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro (1853-1925),5 and Ernesto Padova (1845-1896).6 Both Ricci- Curbastro and Padova provided Levi-Civita with a strong training in mathematical physics and mechanics. Ricci-Curbastro, in particular, provided him with firsthand absolute differen- tial calculus methods, which were the inheritance of Beltrami’s investigations on Riemannian manifolds [16, 38]. -

Emma Castelnuovo and her commitment to a school without boundaries Nicoletta Lanciano Univ. di Roma «La Sapienza» and MCE (Movimento di Cooperazione Educativa) e-mail: [email protected] Abstract. Emma Castelnuovo has travelled extensively. Her commitment to a school for all, promoting social justice through teaching maths, and the development of each student, brought her to countries that had been dictatorships and to countries that had been colonies. In the years 1978 to 1982 she travelled four times to Niger, and her work was important for the whole country. Recently, we students organized residential courses called L’Officina Matematica di Emma Castelnuovo to highlight the practical orientation through which we continue to spread her methods and keep them updated in a changing society. From her teaching for a democratic school, and putting emphasis on attention to “borderline cases” of space and time, I developed the International Project “Globolocal” on a democratic and didactic use of the globe. 1. Education as a journey Emma has travelled extensively in Europe and Central and South America. She has also travelled to Africa, which I will talk about in more detail below. Her books have been translated into several languages, and her methods for teaching maths influenced school education and teacher training in several countries. Her commitment to a school for all, a school that promotes social justice and the development of each student through teaching maths, brought her into countries that had been dictatorships and into countries that had undergone colonialism where local culture was not recognized and valued by the school and by society. -

As a secondary teacher she designed and carried out a programme for the middle school (11–14) based on an intuitive approach fostered by the use of concrete materials. In this way she promoted intuition, exploration, awareness of the links of mathematics with reality, and an active learning. In the 1950s and 1960s, a period of the great ferments in education, her work was very appreciated and she was invited to participate in the milestone events of those years such as the first meetings of CIEAEM, the Royaumont seminar, and the first ICME conferences. She contributed to the first issues of the new journal Educational Studies in Mathematics, addressed specifically to mathematics education themes. For all these reasons she may be considered not only a very good teacher, but also a pioneer case of teacher-researcher. Introduction The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) has decided in the past to create two awards to recognize outstanding achievements in mathematics education research: the Felix Klein Award, honoring a lifetime achievement, and the Hans Freudenthal Award, recognizing a major cumulative program of research. In order to reflect a main aspect of ICMI, not yet recognized in the form of an award, in 2013 ICMI has decided to create a third award to recognize outstanding achievements in the practice of mathematics education. -

Son engagement pour une école pour tous, une école qui favorise à travers l’enseignement des maths la justice sociale et le développement de chaque étudiant, l’a portée dans des pays qui avaient subi la dictature et dans des pays qui avaient subi la colonisation. Dans les années 1978-1982 elle a pu voyager 4 fois au Niger, et son travail à été important pour tout le pays. Récemment, nous, ses élèves, nous avons organisé des cours résidentiels, dits « L’Officina matematica di Emma Cas- telnuovo » pour souligner le caractère pratique des cours à travers lequel on continue à diffuser ses méthodes et à les rendre actuels dans la société qui change. C’est à partir de son enseignement pour une école démocratique, et son accent posé sur l’attention aux « cas limites » de l’espace et du temps, que j’ai élaboré le Projet International « Globolocal » sur un usage démocratique et didactique de la mappemonde. In addition, he was involved in the social and political life of his time and suffered severe political and racial persecution during the period of Fascism. He tried repeatedly and in several cases successfully to help colleagues and students who were victims of anti-Semitism in Italy and Germany. His scientific and private life is well documented in the letters and documents contained in his Archive. The authors’ aim is to illustrate the events of his life by means of his large and remarkable correspondence. 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Sommario Tullio Levi-Civita fu uno dei più importanti matematici italiani della prima parte del ventesimo secolo e contribuì in modo significativo a numerose discipline in campo matematico e fisico. Inoltre, egli partecipò alla vita sociale e politica del suo tempo e fu vittima delle severe persecuzioni politiche e razziali del periodo fascista. Egli tentò in più occasioni, e talvolta con successo, di aiutare colleghi e studenti che erano vittime dell’anti-semitismo sia in Italia sia in Germania. La sua vita scientifica e personale è ben documentata nelle lettere e nei manoscritti contenuti nel suo Archivio.
