KUWAIT CITY, Jan 30, (Agencies): The Kuwaiti Ministry of Health has autho- rized the emergency use of Oxford-As- traZeneca vaccine to protect people from the novel coronavirus. The authorization was issued after a detailed re- view of all relevant scientific data and reports and after conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the vaccine’s safety, efficacy and quality, Assistant Un- dersecretary for drug and food control Dr. Abdullah Al-Bader said in a press statement on Friday. He added that a ministry technical committee also re- viewed the results of the vaccine clinical trials, particu- larly those related to the effectiveness and safety aspects of the vaccine. Al-Bader emphasized that the ministry will closely monitor the vaccine’s safety after using it and will take all necessary measures to ensure safety of people. The ministry official also unveiled that Kuwait will re- ceive the first batch of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine doses within days to help accelerate the vaccination cam- paign. The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, manufactured by the Serum Institute of India under a license from AstraZeneca, was approved for emergency use by the European Medi- cines Agency and Britain’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, he noted. Al-Bader, moreover, added Serum Institute of India is an accredited vaccine manufacturer by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). KUWAIT CITY, Jan 30: The decision to allow the re-opening of entertain- ment centers and halls and children’s play areas did not stand up to the popular campaign that lasted for more than a few hours and forced the concerned gov- ernment agencies to retract their directives and cancel the decision to reopen such activities, reports Al-Rai daily. The announcement of the reo- pening of children’s play areas was met with popular shock in light of the continued closure of schools and nurseries. The cam- paign resulted in the revocation of the decision in this regard by the relevant government agencies. Of- fi cials of entertainment centers and halls were then instructed not to open their doors to the public, and to close the halls that had started operating. Recreational gaming centers, both in commercial complexes and enter- tainment facilities, eagerly received the decision and they had dusted their gaming and entertainment facilities. Some of them opened its doors to the public just before the government re- voked its decision. PAAET inks MoU with KOC Govt’s apartments distribution in Feb KUWAIT CITY, Jan 30: Minister of State for Hous- ing Affairs and Minister of State for Services Affairs, Dr Abdullah Ma’arafi said the process of distributing government apartments in Jaber Al-Ahmad residential city will be from early February, reports Al-Qabas daily. Minister Ma’arafi explained he has instructed the offi cials of the Public Authority for Housing Wel- fare during a meeting which was held at the PAHW in South Surrah, to set a timetable for the distribution of apartments in Jaber Al-Ahmad City to ‘deserving’ citizens, indicating that the announcement will be made on Wednesday, Feb 3, and the fi rst lottery will be drawn on Feb 10. The minister said all employees are working to their full capacity to begin implementing the plan according to the schedule and that about 350 Kuwaiti families stand to benefi t. Meanwhile, the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) to link the outputs of the Col- lege of Nursing affi liated to the PAAET with the employment plan at Ahmadi Hospital, reports Al- Jarida daily. Extension This comes as an extension of the memorandum of understanding that was signed in the past between the two sides. The Acting Director-General of PAAET, Dr Jas- sem Al-Ansari said, “This constructive cooperation between PAAET and KOC is in the interest of the PAAET students and the company’s employees.” He affi rmed the authority is looking forward to more cooperation with the company in various disciplines it provides, to achieve sustainable development for both parties. For his part, the CEO of the KOC Imad Al-Sultan, stressed the company is keen to train and develop the skills of its employees, pointing out that this coopera- tion is only an extension of previous joint agreements signed with the authority. Al-Sultan stated, “the College of Nursing is one of the basic building blocks for the training of nurses, and that the real construction of the national workforce comes from the concerted efforts of the authority to train and prepare students, and its keenness on human investment in national cadres.” The Dean of the College of Nursing, Dr Ali Al- Hajraf, expressed his happiness at the signing of this agreement, which complements the agreement that was signed in 2014 for 5 years, which has been re- newed for another fi ve years. EU tightens vaccine export WHO visits 2nd Wuhan hospital in virus probe WUHAN, China, Jan 30, (AP): Members of a World Health Organization team investigating the origins of the coronavirus pandemic visited another Wuhan hospital that had treated early COVID-19 patients on their second full day of work Saturday. Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital was one of the fi rst in the Chinese city to deal with patients in early 2020 suffering from a then- unknown virus and is a key part of the epidemiological history of the disease. “Just back from visit at Jinyintan hospital, that specialised in infectious diseases and was designated for treatment of the fi rst cases in Wuhan,” Dutch virologist Marion Koopmans said in a post on Twitter. “Stories quite similar to what I have heard from our ICU doctors.” Zoologist Peter Daszak of the US group EcoHealth Alli- ance, who is a member of the team, said in a tweet that the visit was an “important opportunity to talk directly” with medics who were fi ghting the virus at the criti- cal time. The team’s fi rst face-to-face meet- ings with Chinese scientists took place on Friday, before the experts who specialize in animal health, virology, food safety and epidemiology visited another early site of the outbreak, the Hubei Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Hospital. The Geneva-based WHO said late Thursday on Twitter that its team plans Ursula to visit hospitals, markets like the Hua- nan Seafood Market that was linked to many of the fi rst cases, the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and laboratories at facilities including the Wuhan Center for Dis- ease Control. “All hypotheses are on the table as the team follows the sci- ence in their work to understand the origins of the COVID19 virus,” WHO tweeted.
