Prestige Label Discography
Discography of the Prestige Labels Robert S. Weinstock started the New Jazz label in 1949 in New York City. The Prestige label was started shortly afterwards. Originaly the labels were located at 446 West 50th Street, in 1950 the company was moved to 782 Eighth Avenue. Prestige made a couple more moves in New York City but by 1958 it was located at its more familiar address of 203 South Washington Avenue in Bergenfield, New Jersey. Prestige recorded jazz, folk and rhythm and blues. The New Jazz label issued jazz and was used for a few 10 inch album releases in 1954 and then again for as series of 12 inch albums starting in 1958 and continuing until 1964. The artists on New Jazz were interchangeable with those on the Prestige label and after 1964 the New Jazz label name was dropped. Early on, Weinstock used various New York City recording studios including Nola and Beltone, but he soon started using the Rudy van Gelder studio in Hackensack New Jersey almost exclusively. Rudy van Gelder moved his studio to Englewood Cliffs New Jersey in 1959, which was close to the Prestige office in Bergenfield. Producers for the label, in addition to Weinstock, were Chris Albertson, Ozzie Cadena, Esmond Edwards, Ira Gitler, Cal Lampley Bob Porter and Don Schlitten. Rudy van Gelder engineered most of the Prestige recordings of the 1950’s and 60’s. The line-up of jazz artists on Prestige was impressive, including Gene Ammons, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Art Farmer, Red Garland, Wardell Gray, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Milt Jackson and the Modern Jazz Quartet, “Brother” Jack McDuff, Jackie McLean, Thelonious Monk, Don Patterson, Sonny Rollins, Shirley Scott, Sonny Stitt and Mal Waldron. -

Performances of Irish ballads remained popular with English audiences but the publication of Stanford’s song collection An Irish Idyll in Six Miniatures in 1901 by Boosey and Hawkes in London marks a shift to a different type of Irish song. -

12 Set works – Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 or Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 Learning objectives: 4 Methods of study 4 to understand how to study The detailed study of a set work introduced in Unit 1 is developed a work in sufficient detail for further in Unit 4. From the 2013 examination the set work is a complete A2 Level 20th-century symphony: either Symphony No. 1 in Ab major by Elgar or Symphony No. 5 in D minor by Shostakovich. First impressions Depending on your previous experience of listening to music and attending concerts, you may prefer to listen to the whole work at once or take one movement at a time. Following the score may be helpful but it is not essential at first, especially if you are not well practised in following a complex orchestral score. Note down any strong impressions and look at them again when you know the work better to see if they can be justified. -

ALOYS FLEISCHMANN (1910-1992) DIARY 1926 TRANSCRIBED AND ANNOTATED BY RUTH FLEISCHMANN 2 A DIARY OF MYSELF AND MY ACTIONS BEGUN JAN 31 1926 Aloys Fleischmann 6 Wellesley Terrace Wellington Road Cork 3 January 1926 Sunday 31 Memorable day of big concert in Opera House. Programme consists of ‘Hail, Bright Abode’, ‘Fly, Singing Bird, Fly’ and ‘The Walpurgis Night’. Peter Dawson 1 also sings two groups of songs. After Mass, Pappy and I go to meet Dawson in the Imperial Hotel, and then go to general practice. Very nervous before performance. Concert great success. House packed. Choir sings splendidly, and Dawson proves to be a fine artist. I accompany on harmonium, and evidently get on pretty well. Miss O’Brien 2 is at piano for choir, and Mr. Carlton Fay, a typically dry Australian, plays for Dawson. The only painful event was that the curtain could not be dropped in time as the man was at the time smoking his pipe in some other part of the house. Everything splendid afterwards until it was found out that three of the soloists were departing from the choir, because they were not brought to the footlights. Shows their mentality! February 1926 Monday 1 Great disgust on seeing criticism of concert. Absolutely rotten. While every trash gets the highest praise in the ‘Examiner’, this beautiful concert, and all really artistic performances, are shamefully ignored. Many resolutions of going to Germany as soon as possible, where good efforts of any kind are well recognised, and bad ones turned down. Spend the day in school 3 ruminating on the events of yesterday, and feel hopelessly disgusted. -
