JUNKI YOSHIDA SENSEI TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR AND HOST OF THE YOSHIDA CUP NORTHWEST CLASSIC INVITATIONAL INTERNATIONAL KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP & SEMINARS Dear Sensei, Coach, Athlete and Parents: Welcome to the 32nd Anniversary Yoshida Cup-NW Classic International Karate Championships & Seminars (Invitational) on Saturday-Sunday, March 17-18, 2018 at the Yoshida Events Center at Mt. Hood CC Gymnasium. 2018 starts the race for competitors to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. We are excited to assist in promoting Karate to this next level! I greatly appreciate the dedication and pride that athletes, coaches, and officials have in preparing and participating in competition and the camaraderie that it brings. This weekend will again provide wonderful positive memories of great competition and the ability to train and compete with the highest caliber of karate-ka. We will again welcome almost 100 competitors, coaches, and officials from Japan, in addition to great competitors from throughout the U.S., Canada, and other countries. They are sponsored by “Say Oss! Save Japan Through Karate” disaster relief organization, that conducts karate seminars and competition throughout Japan to raise funds for their wonderful cause. The 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami inspired “Say Oss”, and now provides international relief for natural disasters. They are led by Kiyohiko Tosa Sensei (Japan Nation Team at several WKF World Championships), President of GKIF, and Shin Tsukii Sensei , IKGA. We again welcome the very best in karate instruction and training with our world-class seminar instructors. They include: 7 time World Champion Yukimitsu Hasegawa Sensei for a kata seminar; Kou Matsuhisa Sensei, “Scorpion Kick King” and now a Japanese National Team Coach will return for another fantastic kumite training seminar; Shin Tsukii Sensei “Expert of the Match” and Kiyohiko Tosa Sensei will be adding strategy and training preparation for kumite seminar; Tomohiro Arashiro Sensei, Pan-Am Director of Ryuei-ryu, will be teaching the finer points of kobudo! We have the opportunity for everyone to develop their knowledge and skills in the rules and officiating with a referee certification course by Sensei Cleveland Baxter, USA Karate Referee Chairman, Pan-American Karate Federation Referee Chairman, and member of World Karate Federation Referee Committee. Auditing the course is free. We welcome and appreciate all officials with any level of USA Karate certification and those who are seeking familiarity with USA Karate / WKF rules. Modified USA Karate rules will be used. Seminars will begin at 9:00 am on Saturday, March 17th. There will be a meeting for officials at 8:15 AM on Sunday, March 18th and competition will begin promptly at 9:00 am. We look forward seeing you there. Attire for referees and judges will be as provided in USA Karate regulations. RULES Modified USA Karate rules will be used for the competition. This event is marked by its focus on traditional karate, friendship, learning and great competition. This will be a weekend that will leave positive memories of great competition and the ability to train and compete with the highest caliber of karate-ka. GENERAL FEES All competitors must complete USA-Karate Athlete Registration for either full-year or one-day membership $5 General Admission - Children 5 years and under - no charge MEDICAL INSURANCE All competitors MUST be covered by personal medical insurance. Tosa Sensei was a several time fighter on the Japan National Team (JKF), earning an Individual Bronze at the 4th Asian Championships and Team Gold at 5th Asian Championships, and on the Japan’s Team Kumite squad for 15th World Championships in Munich. He travels around the world representing the GKIF organization and is current Permanent Director and Vice-Secretary General and designated as successor for GKIF. He spends much time and energy with “Say Oss, Save Japan Through Karate” movement that raises funds to assist the victims of the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami, that still is in a state of recovery. SHIN TSUKII SHIHAN Vice-Chairman of Japan Karate-do Gojukai Association. Former National Team Coach for the Philippine National Karate Team. Tsukii Sensei now is the consultant of Adidas Budo Mart Japan (BMJ) as well as the commentator and consultant of Champ, the authorized video of the World Karate Federation (WKF) and Japan Karatedo Federation (JKF) and President of World Karate Academy. He is known as “Expert of the Match” with several training DVDs with Champ video and teaches seminars around Japan and the world. His seminar at last year’s Yoshida Cup was a great success, providing specific drills, insight and strategies for competition, not just a “work-out”! KOU MATSUHISA SENSEI - THE SCORPION (KICK) KING Four times All-Japan Champion, individual and team fighter for Japan at World Karate Championships with 3 bronze medals, Asian Games medalist, and Premier League gold medalist amongst many accomplishments. Matsuhisa Sensei has established himself not just as a successful fighter but as an analytical and expert coach and trainer that are reflected in his series of training videos produced by the JKF and Champ video. His first time to Oregon and the Yoshida Cup should prove to be a valuable opportunity for all students from beginner to sensei to take advantage of this great opportunity! TOMOHIRO ARASHIRO SHIHAN Tomohiro Arashiro Shihan, Hachidan, Kyoshi, and Pan American Chief Instructor for Okinawa Ryuei ryu Karate-Do Association has been training and teaching for almost 50 years. From Nago City, Okinawa, Japan, he began his journey with Nakaima Kenko, grandson of Ryuei Ryu founder Nakaima Norisato. In 1979, after a degree in Physical Education at Chukyo University in Nagoya City, Aichi, Japan, Arashiro Shihan and his friend Kuniyoshi Tsutomu agreed to immigrate to the United States to teach Ryuei Ryu karate and kobudo. Their fledgling group expanded from informal gatherings in a park in San Diego, to sessions at local recreation centers and VFW halls, to a formal dojo in 1984. YUKIMITSU HASEGAWA SENSEI Japan Karate Federation 7th Dan, 7 time World Kata Champion, individually and with his brothers, Katsuhide and Shinichi, dominated the Japan, Asia, and the Men’s Team Kata event at World Championship level for over 14 years - a feat unlikely to be repeated. In total Sensei Hasegawa’s team won 7 World Championship titles, 1 silver medal and 1 bronze medal in the team kata event. Sensei Hasegawa has also trained and coached 2 individual World Champions (Takashi Katada who the gold at the 2002 World Championships in Madrid, and Itaru Oki who won the gold at the 2005 World Junior Championships in Cyprus).
