It began with a traditional march. One runner raced to the next runner to pass along a lit torch. When the torchere was lit, the Olympic music was provided by U ceremony began. Traditional FAMU's Marching 100 This marked the beginning of the District Ill Special Olympics. This past Saturday, FAMU's track complex was host to hundreds of Special Olympic athletes Since 1968. the Special Olympics program was developed in order to give those who are physically impaired a form of recreation and they've been doing a good job as i seen by the smiling faces and tears of happiness by participants as well as onlookers. Michele Polland, a member of the State Board of Directors and a volunteer, says there were approximately 400 participants in Saturday's olympics. They hailed from Gadsden,Franklin, Leon, Jefferson, Liberty, Madison, and Taylor counties. The participants were divisioned accordint to their age, ability, and sex. ''Because some are more capable than others, there may be five winners in each race," Polland says. For example, if there are five people running in the 50 meter dash, one person might belong to division I, and one person in division II. and one in division Ill and so on, Polland says. If there's only one in each division ,whether they are one second or one hour behind the other runners, they still would have won in their division, Polland explained. The schedule of events included the wheelchair race, 50 meter dash. 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, mile run, 400 meter relay, softball throw, the high jump, the frisbee throw, the long jump, swimming and Develop-Mental, a special event for the severely impaired. Out of those events. Polland has found that many of the participants enjoy the 50 meter dash, the softball throw, and the long jump more than the other events. Volunteers numbered close to 300 according to Bill Schnitzer, District Ill Special Olympics Director. I,
