Christ Church Parish Magazine Page 2 July 2012 People at Christ Church - A PERSONAL PROFILE Joan Bennett Hall Manager I became the appointed person for dealing with hall bookings in August 2006, as our then Vicar and his wife were planning their retirement. I am part of a small comittee who has the responsibility for the general oversight of the hall. The hall is well used, and I am happy to be involved in the service to our community that this hall provides. I am married to Bob, a retired Civil Servant, and we have both worshipped at Christ Church for about 20 years. I have two grown up sons and three grandsons. Both my sons married at Christ Church, and my grandsons were baptised there. I was baptised, confirmed, and married at Milton Church. After our move from we worshipped, for some while, at our local free church, and I became a Deacon, an Elder, and Church Secretary, before returning to CofE and Gravesend. I trained at Avery Hill College as an Infant teacher and spent the last 19 years in that profession as a Headteacher. I served in the community for 13 years as a trained advisor for the Gravesend Citizens Advice Bureau, and was for a short while on it's management commitee, and represented the bureau on the and Dartford Domestic Violence forum, having been instrumental in establishing it. As a former member of Soroptimist International I have been involved in addressing local and global issues and have served on other committees such as Arthritis research, mainly raising the profile of its work and fundraising. I view managing the hall at Christ Church as an extension of my work in the community. FIRST STEPS

Is a service especially designed for families with pre-school children, although all children in the family are welcome to come. We meet in the church at 1.45 pm on the second Wednesday in each month for a short service and then to enjoy a chat over a cup of tea. We are finished in plenty of time for parents to meet their other children from school. Why not come along with your children, you will be very welcome. Next date is Wednesday 11 July

Christ Church Milton-Next-Gravesend Page 4 July 2012 Eligibility assessment deadlines for NHS continuing healthcare funding

People who think they or a relative may be eligible for continuing healthcare funding by the NHS but who have not yet applied for it are urged to do so promptly. NHS continuing healthcare is the name given to care arranged and paid for by the NHS for people not in hospital but whose primary need, as a result of disability, accident or illness, is for healthcare (rather than social care). Most people who receive continuing healthcare funding live in residential care but some people are in their own homes. The funding is subject to review. If people’s care needs change, their funding arrangements may also change. The Department of Health has set cut off dates for funding assessment because the responsibility for continuing healthcare funding is moving from Primary Care Trusts to Clinical Commissioning Groups. Deadlines being introduced as a result of the reorganisation of the NHS mean that applications must be in by 30 September for claims between 1 April 2004 and 31 March 2011. People whose care was received between 1 April 2011 and 31 March 2012 need to apply by 31 March 2013. People who received care across both time periods must submit before the first deadline - 30 September 2012 - for the entire period of care to be assessed. Applications after the deadline will not be considered unless there are exceptional circumstances. The Department of Health deadlines apply to people or their families who have not been assessed for continuing healthcare funding before. The deadlines

· People whose care was received between 1 April 2004 and 31 March 2011 need to apply by 30 September 2012 · People whose care was received between 1 April 2011 and 31 March 2012 need to apply by 31 March 2013. To apply for assessment People or family members who think they could be affected need to contact the following: For residents of Dartford, Gravesham, Swanley, Medway and Swale Janet Manuel Head of NHS Continuing Healthcare Assessment North NHS and Medway 50 Pembroke Court, Chatham Maritime, Kent ME4 4EL Tel: 01634 335045 The assessment process Health and social care staff work identify if someone needs a full assessment of eligibility for continuing healthcare. Two or more health and social care professionals involved in the person’s care will ask the person’s permission to speak to all professionals involved in their care. They might also ask for specialist assessments. Eligibility is then determined by looking at 11 types of needs, such as mobility, nutrition and behaviour and then deciding the nature, complexity, intensity and unpredictability of the person’s needs. If the primary needs are health needs, they will make a recommendation that the person should receive NHS continuing healthcare. The person will receive the outcome of their decision in writing, setting out the reasons. NHS Continuing Healthcare is reviewed after the first three months and then annually. Those not eligible may still have health needs. The NHS may pay for part of the support package without charge. The local authority may also part fund the person’s care package and you may have to pay a contribution, depending on your income and savings. If someone is unhappy with the outcome of their assessment for eligibility for NHS continuing healthcare, they can ask NHS Kent and Medway to reconsider the decision.

Remove from the heat, add the spinach leaves and basil, and toss together to wilt a little. Transfer all the ingredients to a greased 30cm x 20cm rectangular baking tin. Take small scoops of the ricotta and dot over the vegetables. 3. Season the eggs and beat well, then pour over the vegetables and cheese. Cook in the oven for 20-25 mins until pale golden and set.

Our naughty little sheep is up bright and early and really pleased and excited to see the sun after all the rain we’ve had. He’s looking forward to our First Steps service and he says he’d like to hear Jesus’ story of the Lost Sheep. He’s decided that he’ll be the lost sheep and the children can try to find him. He and his friends and I walk up to the church, in the lovely sunshine. Once in church our naughty little sheep sneaks off to find a hiding place. His friends hope that the children will help them to find him later. When everything is ready for our service, we wait patiently for Mums and Grannies and children to arrive. Our naughty little sheep’s friends are beginning to fidget but our naughty little sheep is keeping very quiet in his hiding place. I wonder where he is. Soon we’re joined by a happy, lively crowd including Ruby and Ophelia, with us for the first time, with their Grannies, Tracey and Val. Our naughty little sheep’s friends have stopped fidgeting and are being well looked after by the children. I light the candles and our service begins. We talk about Jesus’ story of that naughty sheep that wandered off. The shepherd was very worried and had to leave the other sheep safely in the sheep pen and go to find him. The shepherd loved his sheep and he wanted them all to be safe with him. Jesus is our Good Shepherd and we are his sheep and when we wander away from his path, through his Holy Spirit he comes to find us. Like the Good Shepherd we all go to see if we can find that naughty wandering sheep. Elijah sees him first, perched high up on the bookcase. Goodness only knows how he got up there. He could have fallen and hurt himself! We sing, “Baa, baa black sheep” and “Baa, baa white sheep” much to the children’s delight. This is followed by other favourites, “ Thank you, God for the people we love” and “Jesus’ love is very wonderful” We thank God for our happy time together, for the sun and for the rain and for His very many gifts to us each day. We are so lucky and blessed! When our candles have been blown out, our service is over and it’s time to go into the hall for a cuppa and a chat. Once again our naughty little sheep and his friends enjoy watching everyone having a good time. We’ve enjoyed our time together and our naughty little sheep, his friends and I hope that everyone will join us again for our next First Steps service on 11th July. Will the sun be shining? We shall see! God Bless Rosemary Austin.

Celebrate! Christ Church does it so well. The effort of decorating the church on Sunday 3 June was first class, and a fitting tribute to the 60th Anniversary of the Queen’s Jubilee. Traditional hymns, red white and blue bunting and most pleasant refreshments in the hall. Well done all concerned, Mavis and David Casely

Christ Church Milton-Next-Gravesend Page 14 July 2012 Seafarers transport more than 90% of the food and goods we use every day, and yet these 1.2 million hardworking men and women are often forgotten. On Sea Sunday, the Church comes together to remember seafarers and to pray for them, their families and the ministry of The Mission to Seafarers to crews around the world. As well as raising money to help those who work at sea, the day is sometimes celebrated with services, parades and ship blessings. As a welfare agency with more than 150 years’ experience of caring for seafarers, the Mission is there to support mariners in need in 254 ports around the world. Away from family and friends for many months at a time, in multinational crews with others who may not speak the same language, seafaring can be a tough, lonely and hazardous career. A life at sea involves working long hours and navigating some of the world’s most dangerous waters. Many risk shipwreck, storms, injury, and pirate attack without a single friend on board with whom they can share their fears. BBC Songs of Praise presenter Pam Rhodes, who comes from a family of sailors, is supporting this year’s campaign. She recalls a prayer she heard as a child which describes the isolation and vulnerability of the seafarer as something we can all relate to: “My favourite prayer is a very small one which seems to sum up so much – not just for seafarers, but for anyone who feels at sea in their own lives. It is this: ‘O God, thy sea is so great and my boat is so small.’ “I first heard this prayer when I was at school, and as I come from a naval family which travelled from one port to another, this prayer said in assembly had a very special meaning for all of us. To think that those we loved were out on the huge ocean in relatively tiny vessels was a frightening thought – unless you believed that God was with them, protecting and guiding, wherever they were. “ Today, Mission to Seafarers’ chaplains provide a global network of Christian welcome and support so that seafarers can unload their heavy cargo of worries. Our seafarers' centres offer a 'home away from home', enabling mariners to contact their loved ones through telephone and email, seek counselling, spiritual support or a welcome break from the routine of life on board. For those who are unable to come ashore due to port duties or short turnaround times, our ship visitors bring low cost phonecards and internet-linked laptops on board so that crews are not completely cut off. The Mission is a friend in a foreign port to hundreds of thousands of seafarers every year, and in an emergency, we are often the only help on offer. No matter what problem a seafarer is facing, be it piracy, shipwreck, injury, non-payment of wages or abandonment in a foreign port, they know they can turn to the local Mission to Seafarers for help. Our chaplains and volunteers offer practical and financial support, advocacy services, and access to legal advice, family liaison or simply a space to talk.

Christ Church Milton-Next-Gravesend Page 16 July 2012 NHS 111 - making it easier for people to get urgent healthcare

A free health service to make it easier for people in Kent and Medway to get urgent healthcare when they need it moved one step closer today. The NHS 111 service in Kent and Medway will be provided by a partnership between South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SECAmb) and Harmoni, who have been named today as the preferred provider of the service. NHS 111 will make it easier for people to get help quickly when they have an urgent health need. When someone phones 111, a trained call handler, supported by health professionals, will provide them with a clinical assessment at the first point of contact, without the caller having to wait for a call back. 111 will be free to call and will be available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Clinical commissioning groups, led by local GPs, and the board of NHS Kent and Medway agreed the preferred provider following an open, competitive tender process for the service. Ann Sutton, Chief Executive of NHS Kent and Medway, said: “This is an important step in our journey towards providing patients in Kent and Medway with a single point of access for all urgent healthcare services. I look forward to working with SECAmb and Harmoni to make 111 a reality and to making local urgent health services easier to navigate for our patients.” Dr Mark Jones, a GP in Canterbury, said: “I am delighted that we now know who our partner is for providing the 111 service, which will make urgent care better for our local patients. Over the coming months we will be working closely with SECAmb and Harmoni to prepare for the start of the 111 service by April 2013.” NHS Kent and Medway is now finalising the contractual arrangements and plan to formally sign the contract later this month.
