WEST COAST Flatter – Caressing by Honour and Glory 2014 Bay l 16.2 Hands “An Eclipse Award winning champion, West Coast is by an outstanding sire son of A.P. Indy, out of a ChampionTwo-Year-Old Filly. West Coast earned a title as Champion Three-Year-Old Colt with five consecutive victories, four in stakes events, and ran 1-2-3 in six consecutive grade one events, including when capturing the Travers Stakes (G1) and Pennsylvania Derby (G1). He is by Flatter, a leading stallion son of A.P. Indy, and sire of more than 50 stakes winners, and out of Caressing, Champion and Breeders’ Cup (G1) winner at two.“ The offspring of West Coast will be free of Northern Dancer at four generations on their sire’s side, and Flatter has crossed well with a wide variety of broodmare sires from that line. The cross with mares from the Danzig branch of Northern Dancer has been particulary productive with seven stakes winners, including graded stakes winners Classic Point and Mad Flatter out of mares by Langfuhr and Honor Grades (who gives inbreeding to the dam of A.P. Indy), and there are also stakes winners out of mares by War Front – who appears particularly interesting here, giving inbreeding to Relaunch and a full-sister – Danzig Connection, Ghazi and Military (who would be intriguing here).

$400,000 Pat Day Mile Presented by LG&E and KU (Grade III) 95th Running – Saturday, May 4, 2019 (Kentucky Derby Day) 3-Year-Olds at One Mile on Dirt at Churchill Downs Stakes Record – 1:34.18, Competitive Edge (2015) Track Record – 1:33.26, Fruit Ludt (2014) Name Origin: Formerly known as the Derby Trial, the one-mile race for 3-year-olds was moved from Opening Night to Kentucky Derby Day and renamed the Pat Day Mile in 2015 to honor Churchill Downs’ all-time leading jockey Pat Day. Day, enshrined in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2005, won a record 2,482 races at Churchill Downs, including 156 stakes, from 1980-2005. None was more memorable than his triumph aboard W.C. Partee’s Lil E. Tee in the 1992 Kentucky Derby. He rode in a record 21 consecutive renewals of the Kentucky Derby, a streak that ended when hip surgery forced him to miss the 2005 “Run for the Roses.” Day’s Triple Crown résumé also included five wins in the Preakness Stakes – one short of Eddie Arcaro’s record – and three victories in the Belmont Stakes. His 8,803 career wins rank fourth all-time and his mounts that earned $297,914,839 rank second. During his career Day lead the nation in wins six times (1982-84, ’86, and ’90-91). His most prolific single day came on Sept. 13, 1989, when Day set a North American record by winning eight races from nine mounts at Arlington Park.

WEDNESDAY, 28TH DECEMBER 2016 EBN EUROPEAN BLOODSTOCK NEWS FOR MORE INFORMATION: TEL: +44 (0) 1638 666512 • FAX: +44 (0) 1638 666516 • [email protected] • WWW.BLOODSTOCKNEWS.EU THE NEXT ISSUE WILL BE TUESDAY, 3RD JANUARY 2017 we all got it right. It’s quite frightening to watch, isn’t it? When Cue TODAY’S HEADLINES Card went up beside Thistlecrack six or eight [fences] out, I thought ‘goodness me’. It’s a very fickle world we live in. We’ve all seen NATIONAL HUNT RACING REVIEW Thistlecrack for the last few years, he’s had his biggest test and he’s a brilliant horse. When he was long he was standing off and Tom [Scudamore] was being a bit careful at the second last and he RIVALS CRACK AS THISTLE shortened up almost like a show jumper, he never touched a twig. PILES ON THE PRESSURE He’s got everything you’d want in a racehorse. Cue Card could have cried enough at the last, but he stuck his head out and finished Thistlecrack put his more experienced rivals to the sword in the second, so it’s brilliant.” Gr.1 King George VI Chase, the feature race on Boxing Day at Thistlecrack, who won the Gr.1 Long Walk, Gr.1 World and Gr.1 Kempton Park. The eight-year-old son of Kayf Tara, who was Liverpool Stayers’ Hurdles last season, is likely to cement his Gr.1 having only his fourth start over fences, treated the former Cheltenham Gold Cup claims in the Gr.2 Cotswold Chase at winners Silviniaco Conti (Dom Alco) and Cue Card (King’s Prestbury Park at the end of January, but Cue Card could head Theatre) to some daring fencing as he tracked the former before straight for the blue riband.

  • Bill Oppenheim, Dec
Bill Oppenheim, Dec. 16, 2009–Roll The Dice FROM THE DESK OF... Bill Oppenheim ROLL THE DICE Predictability. Well, who wouldn=t like a crystal ball? Mine might be slightly less clouded than others, but anybody who tells you they can predict which sires are going to be successful, and which aren=t, is deluding somebody. There=s a long history of can=t-miss stallion prospects who ended up on foreign shores, and equally a distinguished roll-call of relative nobodies (Distorted Humor, Pivotal) who=ve become household names in the breeding world. Write it down a 100 times: what they do on the racetrack isn=t necessarily what they=re going to do as a sire. In recent years, stallions that were unproven when the horses were bred have sired more than their share of good horses in their first or second crops. It wasn=t just a sales ploy, though for a while there you had a better chance of making money by using first-year sires regardless of whether they ended up good, bad, or indifferent. Rather the opposite is the case during recessionary times--breeders tend to fall back on the proven commodities, and the unproven sire becomes a more difficult sell. You can particularly see this when, as now, the prices on proven sires have fallen so much. Thus, I have knocked out from consideration as When you have legitimately good stallions standing for >value= unproven sires five horses who stand for more $7,500 and $10,000, the unproven horse at that and than $40,000: F2008 Bernardini ($60,000 first all higher prices has to offer something really special to two-year-olds 2010); F2009 Street Sense ($50,000); attract those breeders who were fighting over them and F2010 Curlin ($60,000) and Big Brown ($55,000)-- two years ago.
