Our Deadline is Thursday REFLECTIONS by Diane Skinner Flowers Kick some leaves It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Some might say that honour belongs to Christmas, but let’s consider the beauty and gorgeous sunny days of fall. Fall, like spring, is the in between season. We know full well that winter is coming so many are busy getting ready for that inevitability. People are piling their wood and getting out the winter tires. Others are making sure that the chimney and pipes are cleaned and ready for the winter fires, however, there is more to do than work. Fall is fun. Consider all that you can do to enjoy these precious days of warm, sunny afternoons and cool evenings. Look back to your childhood and recall what you did to enjoy this season: Pile leaves and jump in the pile! Kick the leaves. Go ahead, who cares if somebody is watching! Did you care about people watching when you were a child? Channel that and jump! Go for a leisurely bike ride. Take in the sights, smells and sounds of fall. Pick apples soon or it will be too late. Try a new apple recipe! If you like the traditional recipes there is nothing that smells quite as delicious as an apple pie straight out of the oven. Don’t forget apple crisp served with ice cream. Do not forget the cinnamon. Make caramel apples. It can be messy, however, you will be very popular with the children in your life. Have a fire outdoors. Wear cozy jackets and breathe in the gorgeous scent of the wood burning outside. Last chance to roast marshmallows or make smores. Plant some bulbs. You put in a little time in the garden now and enjoy the blooms next spring. Perform an act of kindness for a friend, family member or neighbour. Rake their leaves or clean out their garden so that it will not be such a big chore next spring. Bonus: You will get exercise and fresh air. This is the perfect time to get out the big soup pot. Find and try out some new recipes. I have a friend who always makes a big pot of soup on stormy days. Look ahead to that and ask friends to swap a recipe. Get out the slow cooker. We use these less in the summer but fall is the perfect time to get it ready. What a lovely thing to arrive home and know that a wonderful meal is awaiting you and your family. This is not actual fun, but well worth the few minutes it takes. Change the batteries in your smoke detectors. Experts tell us that we should do this every time the time changes, so twice a year. It gives you peace of mind. Make a delicious fragrant salsa from garden tomatoes. Homemade salsa is just the best. You can season it the way you like it and enjoy in the evening with fresh tortilla chips and perhaps a mug of hot cider. Go for a drive. Enjoy the colours and the beauty of the changing season. Pack a picnic and enjoy a meal outside because it may be a while before you get that opportunity again. Go for a fall hike. Enjoy the air and come back with colour in your cheeks. Decorate for Halloween. Make a scarecrow. Use hay bales and corn stalks for decorating the doorway. Host a wine and cheese evening. This is a cool activity to do after a long walk as a group. There will be lots of laughing and talking. That’s great any time of the year. Get a new book. Enjoy it. Savour it. Sit outside and read with a blanket over you if you must. Get out the knitting needles. This is enjoyable to do on a cool fall evening. Perhaps knit some Christmas gifts! Take your phone or camera and take some beautiful shots of the changing leaves. There is much more that you can do in fall. Just don’t let it go by without enjoying it. Don’t forget to kick those leaves. THEGASPESPEC.COM

Are you tired of receiving only bills and junk in the mail? Would you like to learn how to create beautiful handwriting that you can feel proud of? Do you remember the good old days when school children were taught penmanship? Would you like to get out of the house and learn new skills? Then this proj- ect is for you. Elizabeth Dupuis, the proj- ect coordinator, will be organ- izing a series of workshops for children and adults alike. Some of the themes include: the art of calligraphy, Japanese callig- raphy, letters of the past, post- cards, letters for change, and secret letters. Elizabeth will also be look- ing for volunteers to teach younger members of the com- munity the almost lost art of cursive handwriting. “Handwriting is a disap- pearing art. As the use of the internet increases, hardly any- one sends or receives handwrit- ten letters, which is sad because letters create a personal con- nection. They are also histori- cal records, giving us a window into the past. Our handwriting can be a great way of express- ing individuality and personal style. Also, we can physically touch or even smell letters; they can be read and reread and bring back memories,” says Elizabeth. Throughout the workshops, photographic records will be kept so the real letters can be sent to the intended recipient. Participants will be involved in choosing letters which will be reproduced in a book and shown in an exhibition at the end of the project. For more information,
