Complete Catalog of the Motivic Material In
Complete Catalog of the Motivic Material in Star Wars Leitmotif Criteria 1) Distinctiveness: Musical idea has a clear and unique melody, without being wholly derived from, subsidiary section within, or attached to, another motif. 2) Recurrence: Musical idea is intentionally repeated in more than three discrete cues (including cut or replaced cues). 3) Variation: Musical idea’s repetitions are not exact. 4) Intentionality: Musical idea’s repetitions are compositionally intentional, and do not require undue analytical detective work to notice. Principal Leitmotif Criteria (Indicated in boldface) 5) Abundance: Musical idea occurs in more than one film, and with more than ten iterations overall. 6) Meaningfulness: Musical idea attaches to an important subject or symbol, and accrues additional meaning through repetition in different contexts. 7) Development: Musical idea is not only varied, but subjected to compositionally significant development and transformation across its iterations. Incidental Motifs: Not all themes are created equal. Materials that are repeated across distinct cues but that do not meet criteria for proper leitmotifs are included within a category of Incidental Motifs. Most require additional explanation, which is provided in third column of table. Leit-harmonies, leit-timbres, and themes for self-contained/non-repeating set-pieces are not included in this category, no matter how memorable or iconic. Naming and Listing Conventions Motifs are listed in order of first clear statement in chronologically oldest film, according to latest release [Amazon.com streaming versions used]. For anthology films, abbreviations are used, R for Rogue One and S for Solo. Appearances in cut cues indicated by parentheses. Hyperlinks lead to recordings of clear or characteristic usages of a given theme. -

However, the third episode in the saga, Return of the Jedi (1983), was received less favorably than its predecessors by critics. This article will examine historical record and analyze aspects of syuzhet (‘plot’) and fabula (‘story’) (BORDWELL, 1985, pp. 49-50) in the screenplay in order to establish why Return of the Jedi works less successfully as a narrative than the first two films. The results of the investigation suggest that this was due to a fundamental philosophical conflict between screenwriters George Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan. Keywors: Star Wars, George Lucas, Lawrence Kasdan, syuzhet, fabula. -

Extrapolation, Vol. 58, No. 2-3 (2017): 153-180. DOI. © 2017 Liverpool University Press. Used with permission. 1 “Hokey Religions: Star Wars and Star Trek in the Age of Reboots” Gerry Canavan In the last few years debates over stewardship, fidelity, and corporate ownership have arisen in both STAR WARS and STAR TREK1 fandom, as long-standing synchronicity between corporate interest and fan investment in these franchises has suddenly and very sharply diverged. After several decades nurturing hyperbolic “expanded universes” in tie- in media properties, through which devoted fans might more fully inhabit the narrative worlds depicted in the more central film and television properties, the corporate owners of both properties have determined that their commercial interests now lie in reboots that eliminate those decades of excess continuity and allow the properties to “start fresh” with clean entry points for a new generation of fans. In the case of STAR WARS, the ongoing narrative has been streamlined by prioritizing only the six films and certain television programs as “canonical” and relegating the rest to the degraded status of apocryphal “Star Wars Legends,” in hopes of drawing in rather than alienating potential viewers of the forthcoming Episodes 7-9 (2015-2019). In the case of STAR TREK, the transformation is even more radical; utilizing a diegetic time-travel plotline originating within the fictional universe itself, the franchise has been “reset” to an altered version of its original 1960s incarnation, seemingly relegating every STAR TREK property filmed or published before 2009 to the dustbin of future history—in effect obsolescing its entire fifty-year history, “canon” and “non-canon” alike, in the name of attracting a new audience for the rebooted franchise. -
From Sidious to Nixon: the Parallels Between Star Wars and Vietnam
From Sidious to Nixon: The Parallels Between Star Wars and Vietnam A Senior Project presented to the Faculty of the History Department California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Liberal Arts By Brennan Simpson March, 2021 © 2021 Brennan Simpson 1 In the case of a film franchise that features twelve movies, five television series, and various other forms of media by the time this paper was written, many people may be surprised to hear that Star Wars was actually inspired by one of the most questionable moments in American history. However, the time period in which Star Wars creator George Lucas first wrote what became this world’s ‘‘first step into a larger world’’ actually greatly reflected what ended up on the big screen. Even though the Star Wars movies take place ‘‘a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….,’’ it has been publicly stated in interviews that Lucas based both Star Wars media on the Vietnam War and their main villain, Darth Sidious, on former U.S. President Richard Nixon. Though there have been a few scholarly works since the first Star Wars movie was released in theaters in 1977 that have attempted to explore these parallels, none of them has directly explored how Lucas’s long-standing views on the Vietnam War affected certain key moments of the first six Star Wars movies. This thesis explores George Lucas’ antiwar activism before creating Star Wars to demonstrate how remarkably similar the films and related media of this franchise truly are to both various aspects of the Vietnam War and Richard Nixon’s rise to power. -

Do Ewoks Pack a Punch?
Journal of Interdisciplinary Science Topics Do Ewoks pack a punch? Matthew Perkins The Centre for Interdisciplinary Science, University of Leicester 11/04/2018 Abstract This paper aims to calculate the force that would be required to knock out a Stormtrooper with a rock thrown by an Ewok. In order to calculate this, the ways in which a person can get knocked out are explored, finding that the best way is to get the head to rotate in a way such that the brain hits the skull. The spin required to knock someone out was assumed, and was used to work out an angular frequency and subsequently a linear velocity. The force was then worked out, using a number of assumptions regarding the mass of a Stormtroopers head, and it was found that a force of 2797 N would be required to knock the Stormtrooper out. Therefore, the Ewok threw the rock with the same force which was 1.4 times stronger than professional featherweight boxers. Star Wars Legends Timeline
STAR WARS LEGENDS TIMELINE www.swbooks.net/legends Introduction: Ever since Marvel Comics and the LA Times published their continuing adventures of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, C-3P0, R2-D2 and Darth Vader in a galaxy far, far away hundreds of writers and artists expanded the original galaxy created by George Lucas. And it wasn’t just new stories there were new characters, new planets, new vehicles, new weapons and new technologies. By 2014 there were over 700 published novels, comics and short stories. This was truly an “Expanded Universe”. However in April 2014, with the knowledge that the new Sequel Trilogy was not beholden to events created in the Expanded Universe, Lucasfilm announced that, going forward, everything in the Star Wars Expanded Universe would be rebranded Star Wars Legends and a new canonical universe would be created. This meant that events within a Legends story may or may not have happened. The Contemporary Hollywood Film Soundtrack: Professional Practices and Sonic Styles Since the 1970S
The Contemporary Hollywood Film Soundtrack: Professional Practices and Sonic Styles Since the 1970s Submitted by Amy Charlotte McGill to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English, November 2008. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. …………………………………. 2 Abstract Since the 1970s, the soundtrack in Hollywood has come of age as a complex and sophisticated site of cinematic art. Greater combinations of sounds expressing a wider spectrum of tones, textures and volumes can be heard at the movies more than ever before, while behind the scenes, the number of personnel producing them has grown considerably. Moreover, this era has witnessed a proliferation of different artistic and professional approaches to sound. This thesis provides a detailed and wide-ranging picture of these developments and how they were ultimately affected by changes within the American film industry. Drawing on a range of accounts by contemporary sound practitioners and critics, the thesis explores sound production practices, focusing on the sound designer and composer, their creative choices, collaborative relationships - or “sound relations” - and the technologies they employ. The soundtrack is also examined in terms of “sonic style”: the ways in which sound effects, music and the voice function variously in the service of contemporary film narration and genre.
